- 'The Art of Avatar: Fire and Ash' Coming Summer 2026
December 17th 2025 Listings have appeared online for a new artbook based on the third instalment of James Cameron's Avatar series, Fire and Ash , with the release currently slated for summer next year. Pointed out to me on the social media platform Bluesky, The Art of Avatar: Fire and Ash has been listed with a publication date of July 2nd 2026, just over 6 months after the movie's release. The eagle-eyed user had seen the book on the German Amazon store, and although hidden from the UK site, it can be found via its ISBN number or a direct link. No cover has been revealed yet, with a placeholder used as seen below, however, it does give some other details for the book. The artbook is again coming from DK, who published The Art of Avatar: The Way of Water for the previous movie, and will feature 272 pages of concept art and insights for Fire and Ash . It also comes with a description as follows; "Explore the magnificent behind-the-scenes artwork underpinning James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash. Discover how crucial scenes were conceived and marvel at the incredible attention to detail that the Avatar artists brought to the development of new characters like Varang, leader of the fearsome Ash People, and aerial creatures like the medusoid and windray. Hundreds of spectacular images convey all the power, beauty, and intricate detail with which the Avatar film franchise has enthralled millions all over the world. Written in full collaboration with James Cameron’s production company Lightstorm, Art of Avatar: Fire and Ash provides a unique window into a visionary movie universe. This wouldn't be the first time a book has been listed online ahead of an announcement, nor is it the first time the Amazon UK has a book hidden from its search results either, so I'm expecting more from official sources in the near future. The concept art behind the previous movies is exceptional and what has been released for the new movie also looks incredible, including the example seen above from production designer Dylan Cole. No doubt more will be found in the upcoming release, including ideas that didn't make it to the screen and creative insights. This will no doubt make for an exciting release for those that aren't done with the Sully family and Pandora. - 'The Marvel Art of Dan dos Santos' Revealed by Clover Press
December 17th 2025 Clover Press have announced that another entry in their 'Marvel Art of' series is headed to Kickstarter soon, this time with an exciting look at the work of award-winning artist Dan dos Santos. The Marvel Art of Dan dos Santos will be the 9th book in the series and joins the others in being funded through Kickstarter. It was first revealed by website SuperHeroHype and while the campaign has not yet gone live, you can sign up to be notified for when it does here - Kickstarter page . The book can also be backed through BackerKit as well. The series is made to highlight some of the greats and their work at Marvel, making Dan dos Santos a great fit to get his own book alongside the previously featured talents. His art for the comics, as well as for Marvel Masterpieces, showcases why he is an award winner, with his Captain America painting seen above for the book cover. He is a multidisciplined artist, though the majority of his work is done through oil painting, and his work has contributed to some of the biggest companies in entertainment, including Disney, Activision, and DC Comics. Like before, this new hardcover book will come with over 200 pages of artwork and will be 9"x12", making it a good size to shine the spotlight on his art. Expect extras to be available on the campaign too, such as variant covers, signed copies, a slipcase, art prints, and more, as seen for the previous releases. There will be a mix of characters found inside too, with Captain America, Daredevil, Kitty Pryde, and Wolverine all confirmed so far. This previous 'The Marvel Art of' books featured Mike Del Mundo, David Mack, Alex Maleev, David Nakayama, Russell Dauterman, Michael Turner, Michael Allred, and Tyler Kirkham. Each campaign was hugely successful, flying past their funding goals in a short period of time, so more from the series was inevitable. - Book Review - Mileships by Ian McQue
December 16th 2025 Narrative artbooks are a small but growing genre within the book world, delivering stories and ideas alongside artwork from talented artists to pull readers in. Mileships from Ian McQue is one of these titles that has now been making its way into the hands of backers after a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign last year. Created by concept artist and illustrator Ian McQue (Grand Theft Auto, Solo: A Star Wars Story), and co-written with author Jim Rossignol, Mileships is set in an alternate world where people work and live on floating ships and stones. After a decade of painting these ships, this book has been created to explore them further and a copy has joined the collection to become my first narrative artbook review! Build Quality The book comes as a 190-page hardcover measuring 30.5cm x 25.5cm and it's thick too. I wasn’t expecting it to be quite this big, but as they have used high quality thick paper, it does give it some heft. Fortunately, the binding is also very good, securely holding everything in place and allowing pages to open fully too. Overall, they have done a fantastic job with the physical book. Story For a conventional artbook, I would give right into the full content, but it makes sense to split it here for a narrative artbook, so I’ll begin with the storytelling, which comes with an interesting approach. The world of Mileships is presented through excerpts from in-world journals, compendiums, letters, books, and more, all building a picture of this unique world. There are characters and ships that are brought up multiple times throughout the book, with the journey of captain Huna Lintaig and his ship the Remora being the standout that is followed most closely. New elements and areas are visited by the captain, making the Remora somewhat of an anchor (pardon the pun) for the readers experience. The fleets, ships, floating stones, and the inhabitants of this universe are fully fleshed out through details delivered in handfuls of paragraphs at a time. By approaching it through personal accounts, historical texts, and more, it allows deeper details to be shared more efficiently, preventing it from becoming a heavy novel. It does mean that you have to go with the flow initially, as it just drops you in at the deep end, but it’s not long before you suddenly realise it has gripped you. It’s interesting in that it’s not laid out in acts like a story, but rather a collection of the highs, lows, and realities of these people’s lives. What I really like is that, without sticking to just one character, it does take you through the different social classes and places organically, from the marshfolk (people on the ground), to the workers, ship builders, and eventually those that live on the stones in the sky. You learn about their lives, their roles, the politics, and of course, the ships themselves. It’s a strange and yet familiar world presented in a non-conventional way and works well to deliver so much lore in a book like this. Art One of the things that attracted me to this book was Ian McQue’s artwork, and unsurprisingly it is exceptional throughout Mileships . His art of floating boats gets the full artbook treatment and creates a simultaneously grounded and surreal reality to get lost in. There are a lot of incredible full colour pieces of the mileships, stones, and people, each depicting the artist’s world, and all are complimented by the written history and stories too. As you can see in the previews, this may be sci-fi, but it’s certainly not alien and this helps you settle in to the world as there are recognisable elements from real-life places like boat yards, scrapyards, and farms. It also features a lot of sketches too, an inclusion I really like as other narrative artbooks don’t include things like this. McQue’s concept art background is on full display as there are a large number of designs in the book by doing this, as opposed to only having select ships featured in illustrations. Most of these include no text at all, so become a showcase of ideas and elements, and designs for the gravity-defying reality. I love the style, it’s not photoreal as you can see with the people and some of the shapes, but it still looks familiar enough to feel tangible. You can imagine being on the ships and going to the places they visit. What always impresses me most is the sense of scale and depth in the artwork, made more extreme by the fact most of the book takes place in the air. The only drawback is that I want more of it! Overall, along with the narrative elements, this a hugely effective way to get immersed in a new reality, as well as collecting wonderful art. It has left me wanting more because it’s such an interesting place, it’s easy to imagine that there are individual stories to tell after my tour of the sky. Credits Short and sweet, Ian McQue has his name on the cover and Jim Rossignol is named at the start too, you can’t expect much more! The only thing I did notice is that there is no book publisher mentioned for the manufacturing, which I haven’t seen before. Use of Space As you can see, the pages are filled and the text is placed either on empty areas or outside of the main focal point of an image. The art goes right up to the page edge to maximise its use of the space and the binding helps the pages open fully to reduce image loss. A great job for getting the most out of the book. Value This is hard to comment on as it is not available at retail and arrived via the Kickstarter campaign. The standard edition of the book was £40 though and that is more than reasonable for the quality of the content and the physical book itself. I’ve not seen details on a retailer release yet, but keep an eye out for that. A RRP of £40/$55 would be a very fair price for the book. Verdict Mileships is an excellent book and a portal to a new place, one that that feels lived in and full of history. It doesn’t waste time in setting sail and taking you along for the ride, offering a unique mix of first-hand tales and written documents to compliment an impressive visual spectacle. It may not be a story in the conventional sense, but if you like the artwork and love strong worldbuilding, you will find a lot to enjoy in this book! - Flip Through - The Art of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
December 12th 2025 Continuing the run of new release previews, The Artbook Collector YouTube channel has added another book that was published this month, The Art of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl from Dark Horse! The book is one of three of the video game artbook releases from Dark Horse Books on December 2nd 2025, this time made in partnership with the game's developer GSC Game World. It comes as a hardcover with 224 pages of artwork and insights and arrives just after the PlayStation 5 release of the survival-shooter. Inside you will find artwork for the locations within the Zone, the characters, enemies, anomalies, weapons, and mutants of the game, alongside in-game details and some artists insights too. The art for the environments captures the eeriness of the game, especially with the realistic art style, and the exploration of the anomalies collects unique shapes and designs for their look. 3D models are also used throughout alongside the 2D artwork. In my review of the book I highlight that while some of the chapters are strong, others are underserved, with the book in general lacking the early sketches you can find in other releases. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl launched in 2024 on Xbox and PC and is a first-person shooter with survival and horror elements. It's the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game to be released in 15 years from GSC Game World, the Ukrainian based developer, and the fourth in the series. It is again set in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone and is explored as an open-world filled with deadly anomalies, violent mutants, and enemy humans, all of which add to the danger of the post-apocalyptic world of the game. It features mechanics like hunger, sleep, and weapon degradation, making it a challenging game as you progress through its non-linear story. It has since launched on PlayStation 5 a year later on November 20th 2025. - Book Review - Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho
December 11th 2025 In 2023 Sabotage Studio released the role-playing game Sea of Stars , winning over the hearts of players and picking up some well-deserved awards too. Its combat, characters, and world were complimented by the visuals of the game, with the stunning pixel art continuing in this year’s DLC, Throes of the Watchmaker . Back with another artbook, 3dtotal Publishing are giving fans a look the art that helped make it happen in Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho ! Concept artist and illustrator Bryce Kho continued working with Sabotage Studio for the new DLC, bringing life to the characters and enemies. This new book was funded on Kickstarter along with his solo book, Overflow: The Art of Bryce Kho , but also acts as a follow up to the original artbook last year, Sea of Stars: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho . Set for release on December 16th, a copy has arrived here from the crowdfunding campaign, so let’s jump in. Build Quality Like the original, this comes as a 23.5cm x 31cm hardcover book, this time coming in at just 64 pages to cover the new content. The lower page count is all the book needs, but I’m happy it still came as a hardcover despite this and it allows it to match the artbook for the main game. It uses good quality paper and the binding is great too, as expected with the size. The standout yet again is the cover, which uses gold foil to highlight elements of the custom artwork. They could use a promotional piece for the cover, but having this art created just for the book gives it a special touch and it looks incredible. Content This additional volume had a lot to live up to for me, as the book for the base game is one of my favourites, fortunately though, it packs a lot of punch in its 64 pages! Inside you’ll find early and developed designs for the characters of Throes of the Watchmaker , from common enemies to the bosses. Kho’s art is as charming and creative as ever, coming up with multiple unique ideas based on the same description of what was needed. From here, it moves on to colour pieces that build on the idea to create the final design, allowing readers to see the process and that’s always appreciated. Like before—and something I’m really happy to see return—the book abandons conventional insights and replaces them with the Slack messages between Bryce Kho and the game’s director, Thierry Boulanger. This allows us to see what was requested, Kho’s breakdowns of his ideas, the feedback, and then development, all alongside the art. It’s very effective and much more organic, giving fans an inside look rarely seen in game development. It also shows that beyond just the designs, Kho was giving ideas and concepts for the attacks too, a nice detail people may not have known without the book. Unlike the previous book though, the in-game concepts are for the characters only and not environments, but the back does add in sections for t-shirt designs, key art, and the covers for the two artbooks. I love to see these and they are approached in the same way, with early ideas and then then the final result. This is again uncommon to see, but a very welcome inclusion and highlights the talent of Kho beyond just working on the game itself. It’s hard to give personal highlights as I’m a big fan of the art style and game, as well as impressed with the choices of what to include from start to finish. The personality of the characters combined with the expert colour work makes it easy to see why Bryce Kho was not only got hired to work on the game, but gets this second dedicated showcase too. For specific designs though, I really liked the pages for Monsieur Tendu, Fardush, the Shield Cog Knight, and the superb book covers. Overall, this is the perfect continuation to the previous book, acting as a DLC in itself. It kept the same formula and delivered more wonderful art and insights, and I couldn’t be happier with their choice to do it this way. Credits The biggest credit for the artwork is on the font cover and that covers 99% of the book! There are some additional credits on the first page for the sprites too, each of which are found at the bottom of pages to correspond to their character designs. A thoughtful detail and I’m happy to see them credited here. Use of Space The positives continue, because as you can see, all of the pages make good use of the space, minimizing empty areas and the layouts are clear too. Backgrounds are kept simple, but in multiple colours to make it more interesting, while not distracting from the art and text. The pages open fully and that prevents any image loss in the centre fold in the few spreads that art does cross over, so a strong showing for this part of the review too. Value Throes of the Watchmaker: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho has an RRP of $22/ £15 which makes sense for the book. Although it may be a quarter of the size, I would hardly expect the price to be cut that far down too, it still has to cover the production costs and comes as a hardcover after all. I do think this is a reasonable price point, fans of the game and those that own the first volume will see good value here. I always check for discounts too and, at the time of writing this before its publication date, it is down to £12.99 on Amazon UK, a small drop, but it’s a highly recommendable price. No discount in the US, although the UK is always jumping the gun on reductions. It’s also worth noting that 3dtotal Publishing donates half of their profits to charity, so it’s a company worth supporting. Verdict Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho is another superb showcase of the talent of Bryce Kho and how the designs are created for the game. It may be small in size, but the art, thoughtfulness of the approach, and book design allows it to punch above its weight. Like its predecessor, this comes highly recommended to fans of Sea of Stars , Bryce Kho, and character design in general! - Book Review - WondLa: The Art & Making of the Limited Series
December 9th 2025 The animated show WondLa became a hit on Apple TV following its premier in 2024, successfully adapting the book series from author Tony DiTerlizzi into a 20-part series. Now going from book to show to book, Skydance Animation have partnered with publisher Titan Books to give fans a look at the art that helped create the show, guiding us through what it takes to bring an alien inhabited Earth to life. WondLa: The Art & Making of the Limited Series was released on December 2nd 2025, perfectly timed for the end of Season 3 in November, allowing those not wanting to leave Eva 9 behind a chance to get more from the show. A copy was kindly sent to me by Titan Books, so I can jump in to what you will see is an impressive look at the show! Build Quality The book comes as a 28.5cm x 26cm hardcover with 176 pages, what you expect for an animation artbook. The paper is high quality and the binding is very good too, letting the pages open with ease and lay flat. It’s also a wonderful cover choice, the pink pops and makes it stand out, drawing the eye and highlighting the impressive visuals of the series. It’s everything you want from an artbook! Content Collectors of artbooks may know that titles with ‘Art and Making of’ can sometimes be light on the art side, however, that is far from an issue here. The book is packed with artwork and covers all 3 seasons of the show, alongside a lot of insights from the creative team too. Readers are treated to early sketches, full colour concepts, storyboards, and final renders. I always want to see the early and unused designs through to what made it to the screen, and the team delivered here. The book starts a little more text heavy, speaking to the creation of the show and how DeTerlizzi (who was also a producer on the show), worked with Skydance to adapt the books. Throughout you get insights from many members of the team about adapting the book, changes made, challenges of scale and budget, influences, and more. There’s little wonder the show became a hit, members of the team have worked on some of the biggest movies inside and outside of animation. It’s a joy to read and fans will learn a lot in their time with the book. Of course, all of this experience lend itself well to the artwork, which is superb. From the early designs of the characters, to the colourful locations of the places Eva 9 visits, the talent of the team behind WondLa is on full display on every page. There is a lot more pages for the first season of the show, but that’s in part due to the introduction of the main characters, such as Eva 9, Muthr, Rovender Kitt, Otto, and villain of the first season Besteel. The early designs for the characters are interesting too, showing a nice range of designs as it’s made clear some changes would be made from the books and that offers flexibility. The character art throughout is excellent and captures the personalities and charm of the cast, even in the earliest ideas. After this, the book follows the progression of the story, showing art for the locations and their characters, creatures, assets, vehicles, and more. Like the early character pages, there is a balanced mix of early ideas, developed designs, and final renders. The interviews mentioned that there are a lot of locations in the series and that means this release also features an interesting collection of concepts as a result. This range includes Eva 9’s home of Sanctuary, the colourful plants of Orbona, the elegant city of Solas, and decaying remains of New York. I liked these pages a lot and seeing contrasting designs is always a highlight of any artbook. The individual elements of these places are also great, such as creatures like sandsnipers and air whales, characters, plants, buildings, alien species, and costume design. It paints a complete picture of the art teams work, as opposed to just the vistas and architecture of these locations. Not to leave anything out, there are also pages on the soundtrack created by Joy Ngiaw, a storyboard breakdown of a scene, and a colour script of the first season. It’s a well thought out and balanced collection of artwork and insights, delivering a lot of details amongst the large volume of concepts and designs. When it comes to the content, WondLa: The Art & Making of the Limited Series delivers on all fronts! Credits The positives don’t stop at the art and insights, as the artists are credited on every page, so you can see who is responsible for each piece featured throughout. Animation artbooks are usually very good for this and Titan Books and Skydance made sure to keep that going with their own book. Use of Space As you can see in the previews, pages are filled with art, making the most of the space available. Text is placed in areas that still allows the art to breathe too, helping with the clear readability of everything presented inside. Layouts are not the same spread to spread to keep it feeling sterile and many of the concepts are without a border, so more can be placed on the page. The binding helps here too, as there is no image loss in the centre fold for the incredible looking larger pieces that do cross over it. Value The book has an RRP of $50/ £40, putting in the mix competitively with other animation artbooks. For a good quality hardcover like this, I think those that love the show and want more will be happy with what they receive. Discounts are always good though and checking Amazon highlights that some are already available on books release week. Though deals change, in the US it is currently 12% off, with the UK giving a generous 23% reduction. With price drops available, it sets this up as a nice end of year treat or gift! Verdict WondLa: The Art & Making of the Limited Series is the perfect companion to the show, coming with the details and inspiration behind its development and visuals, backed up by hundreds of pieces of great art. It’s generous with its inclusion of unused designs and presented in a well-designed volume, making it easy to recommend to WondLa fans, artists, and collectors. Titan Books and Skydance Animation have released a strong entry into the animation artbook space, putting it up there with some of the other popular series that collectors will be familiar with. Hopefully this won’t be their last collaboration, as more books like this would be most welcome in the collection here! - Flip Through - The Art of DOOM: The Dark Ages
December 8th 2025 Another week with two video previews for The Artbook Collector YouTube channel following the heavy month of releases for December! This time is a look at the art from the team at id Software for their most recent DOOM game, The Dark Ages ! Made in partnership again with Dark Horse Books, The Art of DOOM: The Dark Ages is a 216-page hardcover that was released on December 2nd 2025 in a matching format to the previous two games for DOOM. It gives player a look at the art and designs that helped create this new chapter in the life of the Doom Slayer, perfect for those not done with demons and hellscapes after finishing the game. As seen in the preview above, inside are early sketches, full colour concept pieces, and 3D models for the characters, demons, locations, and weapons of the game. It's light on text, only giving in-game descriptions, but that gives it a heavy art focus which is complimented by the page design and high print quality. Fans of creature design will appreciate the demon art, which is always incredible from the team, showing alternative and unused designs, as well as a page of demons that were cut entirely. In my review of the book I highlighted that the quality of the book is great as always from the publisher and that the design and use of credits is fantastic. The art focus works well and fans will find a lot to enjoy throughout. Artist insights over in-game details would have been preferred though. DOOM: The Dark Ages was released in 2025 and acts as a prequel to DOOM 2016, showing the story of the Slayer earlier on in a medieval-inspired setting. It changes the gameplay too, focusing on parrying and brute force over the speed and manoeuvrability of the previous two games. It also introduced open area exploration, a deeper narrative, and set pieces, in which you ride a flying demon and control a giant mech. The dark fantasy twist on the series resonated with fans and the game was also received well by critics, showing that even after 30 years, the DOOM series is stronger than ever. - Book Review - The Art of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
December 8th 2025 S.T.A.L.K.E.R. made its big return in 2024, bringing players back to the Zone after the release of the last game more than 15 years before. Not wanting to leave it that though, GSC Game World have partnered with Dark Horse to give players a look at some of the artwork behind S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl ! The Art of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl was released on December 2nd 2025, just a year after the game was first launched and perfectly timed for the PlayStation 5 release. With a copy now in the collection, I can give my thoughts on the book, as well as some photos too! Build Quality This is another Dark Horse video game artbook, so this part of the review writes itself before the book even arrives, because they are consistent in their high production quality. It comes in their usual 23.5cm x 31cm hardcover format, this time with 224 pages. As always, the paper used is good quality and the binding is strong and secure. The pages fully open up without issue as well, something that has been more common in artbooks of late and it’s wonderful to see, as it reduces image loss in the centre fold. An overall great job again from Dark Horse! Content The art comes as both 2D and 3D concepts and like many video game artbooks, the chapters are divided into elements that make up the game, as opposed to following the player’s progression. The chapters are as follows; The Zone, Characters and Factions, Weapons and Customization, Devices and Loot, Artifacts, Anomalies, and Mutants. It’s a nice way to break it up and leading with environments is an uncommon move, but I like it here. The artwork for the environments has a very realistic aesthetic with few exceptions, looking to capture the mood and feel of areas like the Lesser Zone, Wild Island, Duga, and more. It looks fantastic and really places you in the game’s world, you can almost hear the sounds and feel the unease when going through the pages. I also really like the contrast of the outside world with that of the SIRCAA interiors, giving a nice variety of environment types. All of this is aided by the superb print quality of the book, even making the details clear in the many darker pieces the it features. A nice touch was including some studies and section on the team scanning real-world plant life too. For the characters and gear concepts, the artwork doesn’t aim for photo realism to the same degree, but does a great job at highlighting the type of clothes worn in the game, while also highlighting practical elements needed to survive. I would have liked to see more though, as the book does lack unused ideas and early sketches, and they would have been well suited for this section of the book. A highlight is the exploration of the Artifacts and Anomalies, both offering creative visual designs and ideas. The strange shapes of the Artifacts are divided into their types, such as Gravity and Acid, and get a nice amount of page space to showcase their unique looks. Anomalies also provide some interesting concept art through their interactions with the environments and visual effects. They perfectly capture a mix of eeriness and wonder, helping the book convey the feeling of walking through the Zone. The chapters for the weapons and the mutants aren’t as strong though unfortunately, both lacking early concept art and relying heavily on showing final designs. It’s almost as if they ran out of pages and wanted to get as many types in as possible, so settled for showing what was found on-screen. Guns are mostly made up of side-profile single images, with a few getting a couple more pieces of art, like the Gauss Gun. Mutants are the most underserved, with some getting just a 3D model, as opposed to the early creature concepts you’d hope to see. I was expecting it to have the most creative pages, but it’s a smaller chapter and not many of the enemies get exploration, even in cases where they take up entire pages. Text throughout is a mix of in-game descriptions for concepts seen on the pages and notes on what the artists goals were. It’s far from a ‘making of’ book and uses short individual paragraphs to keep the art on the page the main focus, an approach I like here. It acts very much as an extension of the game’s lore though, as it is heavier on descriptions, with the details of the art team’s work shared much less frequently. Overall, the chapters for the Zone, Anomalies, and Artifacts have some great stuff to take in, but other chapters are lacking. It feels like the book is a victim of trying to include a piece of as many elements as possible, but this is restrictive when you only have so many pages. Credits Credits for the art team are not shared on each page, instead they found in a small paragraph at the start of the book. Ideally, I would like to see who is responsible for each piece inside, lacking that, their own credits page. While they are at least included, having them in a paragraph with the publisher and book details will mean that they will be overlooked. I even did that myself until I wanted to make sure they were not featured, only to find that they were, but easily missed. Use of Space The book does a fantastic job at filling the pages throughout, minimizing empty space and allowing the art to get a strong showcase. I like that in many cases images for an environment are used at the top of the page and fade off at the edges, making them the background for other pieces on the page. It works seamlessly and allows select concepts to make more use of the real estate. As mentioned, some of the mutants don’t get a lot of exploration, so perhaps reducing some of the image sizes would have helped allow that. Despite this, for The Art of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl , the team did an excellent job with the page design. Value This new release has an RRP of $54.99/ £49.99, the same as other Dark Horse artbooks published recently, so no surprise there. This the expected price on the market for an artbook like this and you won’t be disappointed in the physical quality of the book. Comparing prices just under a week after release, on Amazon US has the book at 22% off, with the UK site selling it under £40 at 28% off. Discounts this soon after release is never a bad thing and makes the book more enticing for fans that are looking for more after putting down their controller. This is actually a better deal for the US when comparing currencies and highlights that, if you love the game and the previews, there is some good value to be found here. Verdict The Art of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is a well-designed book that brings you into the game’s world through its look at environments and supernatural elements. However, while some chapters are very strong, others suffer from a lack of space, reducing the amount of concept designs they feature. It’s a book made for people that like environment world building, but if you are hoping for character and creature design, you will likely be left wanting. It is very much an extension and showcase of the game you played, as opposed to a book of development insights, early ideas, and the unused concepts that didn’t get used. December 5th 2025 It's a busy time on The Artbook Collector YouTube channel, came out swinging early and the first new release to preview is a look at the Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 from The Chinese Room! The Art of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 from Dark Horse gives fans of the recently released RPG a look at the concept art behind the developers take on Seattle and its not-so-friendly inhabitants. The 208-page hardcover was released on December 2nd 2025, just 6 weeks after the game, an unusually short time for an artbook. As seen in the preview above, the book covers the artwork for the characters, abilities, enemies and locations of the game, highlighting the work of the art team at The Chinese Room, but also some of the concepts from Hardsuit Labs, the developer that worked on the game before handing over the reins. Inside is a lot of costume design for the characters and clans, environments with different styles, and exploration of the platers abilities, all highlighting the variety of concepts and looks within the game's world of Vampires. It will no doubt give players wanting more some interesting art to pore over. December 5th 2025 For more than 30 years DOOM has delivered players with visceral gameplay and demons to rip and tear through, and in 2025 it continued to grow its legacy as one of the most iconic names in gaming. In DOOM: The Dark Ages , id Software expanded on the series’ gameplay, but there is something they didn’t change, an artbook release from Dark Horse! The Art of DOOM: The Dark Ages was released on December 2nd 2025 and showcases the art behind the glorious violence and residents of Hell, perfect for those that loved the game and are not yet done with the Doom Slayer. I’ve been excited for this one since it was announced and can now give my thoughts on the third artbook from the developer and book publisher! Build Quality Dark Horse have released this book in their standard format as a 23.5cm x 31cm hardcover, matching the previous two DOOM artbooks, as well as the vast majority of their other releases too. This means you are getting another well-made book with good quality paper and strong binding, coming with enough flexibility to allow the 216 pages to open fully too. It’s the high standard you expect from the publisher and I’m happy to say that this continues here. Content Something I love about the DOOM games is that they are gameplay and fun first, with their artbooks working in a similar way with no added fluff, just a heavy art focus. The team at id Software are always highlighting the work of the artists and, as you can see in the previews, this is reflected in the pages that allow the art to speak for itself. Inside you’ll find artwork divided into self-explanatory chapters to break up the book; Doom Slayer & Heroes, Enemies & Demons, Locations, and Weapons. It’s the common approach to video game artbooks because it works well, just as it does here. Within these you’ll find a full range of concepts, from early sketches, through to full colour renders and 3D models. Many of these are variations of designs that made it into the game, as well as a handful of unused demon concepts too. The art is exceptional as always from the team at id Software and those that enjoy the games, as well as art for dark fantasy and sci-fi, are well served here. The developer has always been very good at showing off the artwork that was used to help create the game, not just key art and illustrations. Every image, regardless of which artist it is from, which art style they have, or whether it’s a sketch or a detailed concept, is high in quality and has clear design readability. You can see why they are happy to share their early artwork, as it all captures the brutal magic of DOOM. The print quality is excellent as well, which is ideal as the game is very dark, both on screen and in the artwork. The Locations chapter in particular features a lot of areas that don’t reflect a bright summers day, but the print finish allows all the details to be clearly visible, from the City of Ry’uul in the Chaos Realm, to the Forsaken Plains of Hell and their contrast of dark shadows and bright lakes of lava. Highlights for me are always the earliest designs and there is a lot here I liked, such as exploration of the look for the Doom Slayer and Serrat, your winged companion. I’m very fond of creature design too, so seeing the new takes on the classic demons of the series, as well as those making their debut, makes for a nice collection of art to enjoy and inspire other artists. The environment art is stunning and having a collection of it together here highlights the colour themes for the places you shoot your way through, making you appreciate them even more. Those that love weapons get a nice chapter to explore and some get nice thumbnails and designs for how they look and function. Not all of them get this treatment sadly, but the more unrealistic weapons, like the Reaver and Skullcrusher, get this extra focus and page space. As for the text, there is very little to be found. It’s an art first approach, with the text included used to describe the history and lore of some characters, demons, and environments, but the majority go without. I’m always happy with a book that does this when the pages are filled with artwork as seen here, but I do prefer artist interviews and insights over in-game details. There is a lot of art I would like to know the details behind, but this was clearly intended to be a gallery style showcase that I know many people will appreciate. Overall, lovers of DOOM like me will be spoilt with a collection of incredible artwork, while also giving those that are aspiring artists a look at the type of work that helps grow a classic series. Credits Just as previously seen in the artbooks for DOOM (2016) and DOOM: Eternal , credits here are on each page and for each image, the best way to do it. Emerson Tung, Alex Palma, Alejandro Mirabal, Ethan Evans, Colin Geller, and more, have been highlighted online for their work on the game, at times in videos by director Hugo Martin, so it’s fitting that they made sure to name them throughout the book too. In typical fashion, there is no faff here either, as even at the back, they are listed again on their own page very clearly to let everyone know who they are. You can’t ask for more than that! Use of Space The Art of DOOM: The Dark Ages continues the focused approach to the book through its page design. It keeps things simple with clean backgrounds and layouts made to maximise the space, so artwork can breathe and get the showcase it deserves. The less is more approach works wonders when the talent of the team shines like this. This is not unusual for a Dark Horse book and it feels like walking down a gallery wall of art, complimented by the print quality too. The binding here also helps minimise image loss in the centre fold, so a great job on this all round. Value The book comes with an RRP of $55/ £50, nothing unusual here for the book publisher. It’s well-made and owners of previous books will know this is worth the price of admission, as players will not be disappointed with the quality found here when they get their own copy. As always, I compare prices on Amazon and at the time of writing this on the week of release, it is 6% off in the US and 23% off in the UK, who are always quicker to lower prices. At the UK price, the book is a steal and very good value for money. Discounts come and go for bargain hunters of course, but even those that need some demon goodness in their lives right now won’t feel let down without one. Verdict The Art of DOOM: The Dark Ages presents a collection of incredible artwork and highlights that, no matter what decade it is, DOOM is created by some of the best in the industry. Much like the Doom Slayer, the book has little to say, but is efficient in its execution, delivering hundreds of pieces of art and highlighting why it continues to be an iconic series! If it moves, shoot it. If there’s an artbook, buy it. My two golden rules for DOOM remain true, making The Art of DOOM: The Dark Ages a worthy addition to your shelf. After fighting and biting your way through their take on Seattle, players can now jump into an artbook for the game, T he Art of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 from Dark Horse! Released on December 2 nd 2025, just 6 weeks after the game launched, the new hardcover highlights the artwork and insights behind its development for those wanting more from its world. A copy has joined the collection here, so I can let you know my thoughts and what to expect! Build Quality Dark Horse are no strangers to artbooks and this comes in their usual hardcover format of 23.5cm x 31cm, this time coming with 208 pages. The pages are high quality paper as always and the print quality and the binding are also very good, allowing every page to fully open due to its flexibility. These parts of the review are always short for Dark Horse, because they are consistent, reliable, and very good at what they do! Content Across the pages you will find a huge number of sketches, full colour renders, and 3D models, as well as some storyboards and graphic design too. It has a nice mix throughout with a heavier amount of 2D artwork, very common for an ‘Art of’ book. The text is written by Ben Matthews, Michele Nucera and Jordan Grimmer of the art team, as well as the game Director Ian Thomas for some first-hand details. The book begins with a look at the characters, with the main character Phyre getting the most pages and there is no surprise there. There is a lot of costume design for the different looks of the clans that the player can adopt, as well as how the hands will look on screen, something I like to see and not often included. Some characters are underserved though with just a 3D model, and it would have been nice for them to get a collection of smaller designs instead. You may be wondering if anything from the previous developer Hardsuit Labs is included, which there is as you discover quickly. Not only were they mentioned in the introduction, but very early on there is art featured from their team, as seen with the character Lou. I’m happy to see this and although it’s clear that much of the game changed, some of these designs were used in the final release and shown here. A chapter I really liked was for the player abilities that dives into the looks of the different powers and animations. The type of abilities, visuals and colours change based on which of the clans it is assigned to, those being the Brujah, Tremere, Banu Haqim, Ventrue, Lasombra and Toreador. I always like to see this and no doubt players will find it interesting to see how different animations could have looked. This also applies to enemy abilities too, with a look at how they move and attack. It's an interesting chapter that shines the light on something you don’t always see in these books. The rest of the chapters follow the players progression through the story with environment art and enemy concepts. I really like the style of the artwork for the game’s world, the streets aren’t anything unusual, however the use of colourful lights to give everything a vibrant look is a fun way to make it more interesting. All types of colours too, even applying this to interiors, which is my favourite part of the artwork. One of the strongest aspects to the art behind Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is the range of styles used within this version of Seattle. The vintage interior of The Glacier Hotel in contrast to the modern and clean Weaver Tower is an excellent example of the team’s talent, as reflected in the final game. Costume design is also very strong for the main characters and common enemies, and again highlights the range of styles the game uses. Some characters are function over fashion and other can be more elegant or made to fit into a group, such as the Sabbat cult. Text throughout can give in-universe details on the characters and story, or the art and making of the game. Having writing from the artists themselves is always great, as it gives the best insights as to why they went a specific direction and what they were trying to achieve. It’s engaging while not giving a huge amount to read, using small paragraphs or notes on specific pieces on the pages, just the right amount. Overall, there is nothing unexpected here, but that’s because it covers everything and it is very art focused, exactly as you would hope. I found myself enjoying the artwork, especially for the environments and abilities. Credits A great job here as the art is credited on the page, the best way to do it. You’ll see the same names for the 2D art, being Ben Matthews, Michele Nucera, and Jordan Grimmer, but other appear too, mostly for the 3D renders. As mentioned before, Hardsuit Labs are also credited but not with specific artists, although they may not have been known when developer The Chinese Room were given the assets after taking the reins. Use of Space A great job here from the design team as pages are full and the layouts are very readable. Backgrounds are kept simple as the art takes up so much of the space, with the gaps used for placement of the text. The binding does a fantastic job at minimising or removing images loss for pieces that cross the centre fold too, always a huge win. Another strong release in this regard from Dark Horse. Value The Art of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 has an RRP of $55/£50, which is the norm for a video game artbook from Dark Horse. No complaints here, it’s another well made book in the publisher’s large catalogue and owners of their other books will feel happy about this. As always, I compare prices on Amazon too and right now the book is 7% off just after release in the US, with a huge 28% off in the UK. Discounts on artbooks is much more common this early in the UK, but those elsewhere can also find deals as well, which will of course fluctuate. The price of £36 is excellent for a well-made book, but even at a higher price, those that enjoy the art seen in the previews here won’t feel let down. Verdict The Art of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 a solid release that gives the art team the showcase they deserve, allowing the players with a thirst for more to dive into an interesting mix of concept art after finishing the game. Dark Horse have shown again why they are the go-to for video game artbooks, because while it does nothing crazy, their consistent quality means that if you enjoy the game and art, then you will be happy with this book on your shelf! December 3rd 2025 A new artbook has joined The Artbook Collector YouTube channel, this time previewing the latest release in Marvel's long running series of artbooks! The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the focus of their latest book, coming in a new 'Deluxe Edition' format. Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps – The Art of the Movie comes with a 256-page hardcover book, 5 lithograph prints, and a 32-page booklet inside of a slipcase. The artbook itself has added 32 pages on top of the page cap that has been in place for all of the previous Multiverse Saga releases. The 'Portfolio' booklet includes in-universe blueprints and designs for the technology designed by Reed Richards and is the first time something like this has been included in a slipcase. The art inside features a look at the characters, locations, costumes, technology, key moments, and storyboards of the movie, from some early sketches to detailed 2D and 3D concepts. As always from Marvel, insights from the visual development team is featured throughout, offering details on the design approaches, influences, and more for the movie. - Book Review - The Infinity Saga – Thor: Ragnarok – The Art of the Movie
December 2nd 2025 In 2017 the God of Thunder returned with new energy, bringing more than just a hammer, but comedy too. Thor: Ragnarok is widely regarded as the mightiest of the Thor movies, thanks in no small part to the characters and visuals it introduces. As expected, an artbook was released by Marvel to explore the work that went into designing them at the time, but a re-release now available from Titan Books! As part of their ongoing Infinity Saga series, Marvel Studios’ The Infinity Saga – Thor: Ragnarok – The Art of the Movie was published on December 2nd 2025, delivering the artwork of the original book in this reissued version. Titan Books have kindly sent me a review copy and as a fan of the original book, I’m able to give it a review and compare it to the Marvel published original too. Content The hardcover book has 328 pages of concept art and insights, making it one of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe artbooks. There’s a good reason for this too, as there is a wealth of goodies inside, covering the movies many locations, characters, and visual styles. It features fiery world of Muspelheim, Thor’s home of Asgard, and the colourful Sakaar, each showcasing designs and characters that makes it seem like three movies in one. Alongside the artwork are again more interviews from the creative team, actors, and artists. This has always been the case for Marvel and they provide insights into the movie and characters, the approach to the designs, decisions about the final looks, and more. My favourite parts here are always the details given by the talented team behind the art, including Visual Development Supervisor Andy Park and the other artists, such as Jackson Sze, Ian Joyner, and Aleksi Briclot. Marvel have always done a great job at making this engaging, without it becoming a novel. Thor: Ragnarok – The Art of the Movie has a slightly heavier focus on character art and costumes, but given the changes in outfit for Thor, Loki, and Valkyrie, plus the introduction of Hela and the visually distinct planet of Sakaar, it’s not a surprise. This is a good thing though, as the artwork is incredible and you can see the artists really got to flex their creative muscles. Highlights here for me include the mix of approaches to Hela and Surtur, the alien gladiators of the Grandmaster’s arena, and the many interesting designs for Sakaar’s locals that would look right at home in an 80’s sci-fi movie. You realise how much there is to the movie as you read through, with interesting unused designs thrown in as well, such as the Butchers, who were earlier versions of Hela’s minions. As well as this, the artwork for the city on Sakaar is incredibly detailed and rich in colour, with interiors being very unique to the MCU with their style. There are a lot of ship designs too that I really enjoyed and, just like the movie, makes this book a fun mix of fantasy and sci-fi. Keyframes that capture moments of Thor: Ragnarok are impressive too and a staple for the team at Marvel. The arena battle, escape from Sakaar, battle with Hela, and more, are pieces that are each worthy of being framed. Altogether, this makes it one of the strongest Marvel artbook releases. Credits As always, credits are placed on the page, so you know who it responsible for each image, the best way to credit the artists. At the back of the book, their names are listed with each page they are featured on too. I give them the highest praise for this with each book and that doesn’t change here. Build Quality Onto the comparison of this book and the 2017 original now, which was titled Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok – The Art of the Movie . The Titan Books re-release comes as a hardcover with a dustjacket, as opposed to a slipcase. The slipcases were always nice, but in doing this, the new Infinity Saga series has kept their releases at a lower price and I think that’s a good thing, especially as Marvel’s newer books are charging double for that inclusion. The new version is a little smaller, coming in at 24cm x 27cm like the others in the series. However, the original was 24.5cm x 29.5cm size without the slipcase, a small difference. This doesn’t change much inside the book either, as only small adjustments have been made. Below you can see a comparison of the two books, and beneath that a side by side with the slipcase. The best thing about the Titan Books reissue is the quality of the physical book, as again the paper quality is now higher, making the book a little thicker, and the binding has also been improved. Image loss in the centre fold has been reduced and the print quality itself is also very good. The publisher has been very strong in this regard and improves images that were a little too dark in the original releases. Below is a comparison of the two versions, with the new Infinity Saga version at the top. It showcases that the content is the same, with minimal adjustments for the new size. Use of Space This is a Marvel Studios artbook, so this is fantastic as always. The pages are filled, there is no wasted space, and the layouts allow the art too shine. These parts of the review are always short and sweet, because the designers have had this nailed down since the very first release! Value The Infinity Saga – Thor: Ragnarok - The Art of the Movie has an RRP of $50/ £35, a very fair price for the book. The original book can be costly, often going up into triple digits on second had websites and that is certainly painful for collector’s or those that missed out when it first released. That makes this new version perfect for those people, delivering the same content at a much lower price. This is all before any potential deals as well, and when using Amazon for consistency, in the UK it is 23% off already, an incredible deal for the amount of amazing artwork included. There is no deal in the US at the time of writing this just before release, but these come and go too. At full price it’s already a good deal, so you cannot go wrong with this no matter when you buy it. Verdict Marvel Studios’ The Infinity Saga – Thor: Ragnarok – The Art of the Movie is the return of one of best books in the artbook series, now with some quality improvements and a much more affordable price. The art is superb throughout and makes it the perfect companion to the fan-favourite movie. The range of concepts, as well as getting to see what wasn’t used, makes this another excellent release that Titan Books has done a great job of making readily available again. The original was a favourite of mine before and revisiting it was a joy, I would highly recommend this new book to any fan of Marvel and the movies! - Book Review - Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps – The Art of the Movie
December 1st 2025 The Fantastic Four: First Steps hit the big screen in 2025, inviting fans into a new universe to meet the latest version of Marvel’s First Family, as well as their 60’s retro-futuristic styled world. As is tradition, an artbook is here to explore the artwork that helped create the stunning visuals from the team at Marvel Studios! Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps – The Art of the Movie Deluxe Edition changes up the format again, now adding a ‘Portfolio’ and calling itself a 'Deluxe Edition'. As a big fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I’ve been curious to jump in and see if this book justifies its new title and $150 price tag. Build Quality The slipcase comes in at 30cm x 27cm and like the previous releases, is thick and protective, not just decorative. I have always liked the quality of these, so no change there. The book itself is also the same size as the others at 29cm x 24.5cm, but this time has 256 pages, a 32-page increase from the long running page cap for the other books post-Endgame. The paper inside is thinner than you get in most artbooks, but normal for Marvel. While I would like to see this improved, especially in a ‘Deluxe Edition’, it helps a little as the binding is again pretty stiff with no flexibility, although the pages do open a little better than in previous entries. The 5 lithograph prints seen in the other slipcase formats still do nothing for me. They were used to justify the last price increase, but they are lower quality than found in other artbook special editions, coming on a piece of card that is sized awkwardly like the book, so the art doesn’t fill the space. Nothing changes for me here, despite the artwork on them being great. Onto the big one, the ‘Future Foundation Portfolio’ additional extra, the biggest reason for the price tag! So what is it? 32 pages of art held together by two staples... I knew it was small going in, but thought there had to be more to it, yet I fail to see why this couldn’t be included in the main book, other than to hike the price up again. The paper is a small improvement over what is in the book, although most won’t notice, and it only has a card cover, so I can’t say I’m impressed here. Overall, great slipcase, decent book, and poor extras, not the best start. Content This is where things improve though, as the art for the movie is superb throughout the book. There is a lot on display here, including characters, costumes, the city, the Baxter Build, the Fantastic Four Spacecraft, storyboards, building interiors, and more. I found it to be very well balanced too, not neglecting any part of the movie. The art comes in a mix of styles, such as the realistic character pieces we see often from the likes of Ryan Meinerding, but also 3D models, sketches, and more stylised images that focus more on a scene or action. The larger range of art styles has become more common in the Multiverse Saga artbooks, something I really appreciate. Alongside the artwork are insights on the characters themselves, design choices, influences from the comics (especially from Kirby), and the production of the movie. This is all interesting to read and compliments the artwork on the page, especially when hearing from the artists themselves like Meinerding, Wes Burt, Rodney Fuentebella, Jana Schirmer, and more. The actors, producers, Director Matt Shakman, and others are also interviewed and give details about their thoughts and work. Highlights for me include the concept art of the city and architecture, showcasing the retro-futuristic style with some incredible views from afar, as well as at street level. There is even a piece from Ryan Meinerding seen below that stood out, especially as he often focuses on character art. I also liked the interiors too, for both the Baxter Building’s unique areas and the very different feel of The World Ship, home of Galactus. A couple of spreads of storyboards were great to see too, as they aren’t always included in the Marvel books. Keyframes are littered throughout and are spectacular, with some capturing moments not seen in the movie, always an exciting part for me. As expected, the character art remains a strong point for Marvel, continuing to showcase some of the best in the industry. The pages for Galactus will be a favourite section for many and those that love costume design are well fed too, as there is a lot shown for the team’s time on earth and in space. Exploration of the team’s powers is also very interesting, like the radically different ideas for Sue’s forcefield and Reed’s more extreme stretching. Seeing Reed Richards using his powers here in fun ways will be frustrating for those that wanted to see this in action though, as the movie did very little with it! I could go on about highlights, as there are many, but there are some negatives for me too. First, the dark print quality does make a small return to make art unclear, nowhere near as bad as it has been, but a handful of images do suffer. I was worried about the Galactus art in particular, but these images look great, so I’m not sure why the artbook series has had this problem when this example shows it can be done well, even with its blacks and dark purples. The Thing, who should have the most interesting designs is underserved, because it’s only one design shown for him on his dedicated pages, with some costume changes explored. He has some slightly different looks in art for the group posed together, but I was hoping to see early and unused concepts for his face and body, even Mole Man gets a better showcase with 6 spreads of his own. The other member of The Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer make up for it though. As for the ‘Portfolio’, you get some technical drawings, designs, and blueprints for the Baxter Building, FantastiCar, H.E.R.B.I.E., lab devices, the baby stroller, and more. There is some nice stuff here and it’s presented as in-universe, though it has no notes for insights. The contents do nothing to change my mind on it not needing to be separate from the book, it could have been a unique chapter at the end. You can see a page below. Overall, Fantastic Four fans will be very happy with what is in this book, there is a lot of brilliant art to enjoy and interesting insights to read. It’s one of the strongest releases from the last few years for content. Credits A quick part of the review for Marvel as always, because they credit the artists on every page and list them in the back too. They have been consistent on this and it’s always the best way to do it! Use of Space The page design for The Fantastic Four: First Steps – The Art of the Movie is very strong throughout, with the pages being filled and the layouts being clear and readable. It’s another aspect the books have been very consistent on, to the point I could have pre-written this paragraph before even looking inside. I’m always very happy with this part of the review for the series and don’t expect that to change. The binding does cause less image loss than has been seen in some of Marvel’s other artbooks, but it doesn’t avoid it completely. Text next to the centre fold does end up on the bend of the pages because of the lack of flexibility, but this has also been much worse. It’s still not ideal though and after it being an issue for so long, it should have been fixed by now by either adjusting the page design (which I wouldn’t do after just praising it!), or improving the binding itself. Again, it’s not as bad as we have seen before. Value Well, I think this is what some people will be jumping forward to read, because the book has an RRP of $150/ £134, which is quite frankly offensive to collectors of the series. It’s not all bad news, but allow me to vent first. The books when sold alone were $60, which were on the high end for artbooks, especially capped at 224 pages with not the best build and print quality on the market, but the art made it worth it. The jump to $100 by adding a slipcase and 5 below average prints was something I’ve not been happy with in prior reviews, as the value wasn’t there. Now though, for another added $50—the price of an entire 200+ page high quality artbook from other publishers—you get an extra 32 pages in the book and 32 pages stapled together as an ‘extra’. Needless to say, this is awful from a value perspective and I would struggle to agree to $100 RRP for this when considering higher quality books with more art and content can be bought for a third of the price. This is ‘Deluxe Edition’ in name only, because it certainly doesn’t feel like it in execution. There is also no standard edition, so it was already a misleading title and a standalone book would have been most welcome. For this price, you can buy 3 of Titan Books’ re-releases of the older Marvel books as part of their Infinity Saga series instead, coming with up to over 300 pages, the same quality of art and content, but with better paper, binding, and print finish. Marvel should be looking to others like Dark Horse, Titan Books, and Abrams Books as to what their quality and pricing should be, because this is pretty awful. But, and this is a big but, either by design, or because retailers can’t shift copies, the discounts on this book have already been heavy, even before its release. Comparing on Amazon as I always do for consistency, in the US it is 26% off at $111.46, and 41% off in the UK at £79.05. Given how quickly these books come down, either Marvel is playing a game to sell at a discount and their real target price, or copies aren’t moving. Given it’s the biggest franchise in cinema and yet the book can’t crack the top 100 in any Amazon book list, I would guess it’s a sales issue. The UK price I think is fair, the US price is coming close, but I think at over $90, it’s still tough to recommend. As someone that has all of the artbooks for Marvel Studios, it’s painful to see this and I hope they don’t do another ‘Deluxe Edition’, because there isn’t enough added value here. They haven’t listed any future artbooks yet, but Daredevil: Born Again is confirmed to be getting one and I want to believe they have been waiting to see the sales before making their next move. I’d love for them to go back to just a slipcase, or better yet just the book. Without a steep discount like I got this time (I paid £80), I won’t be getting another in this format. Verdict Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps - The Art of the Movie is a frustrating release, because there is a wonderful book here, but it’s held back by the ongoing missteps of the publisher. The artists at Marvel continue to create artwork that deserves to be seen, showing why they are some of the best to ever do it, with page design and insights that compliments their talents. However, the team behind the pricing and production of the books are out of touch, making the series that was once the easiest to recommend, now a ‘wait for a discount’ line of books. Calling this a ‘Deluxe Edition’ at $150 is a stretch that Reed Richards would struggle to pull off. I sincerely hope that Marvel dial it back, lower the price, make them affordable, and actually promote the books themselves to get people interested, rather than leaving it to the artists on social media. There is gold here, I hope they return to letting it shine again soon! If you find a good discount though, this will be a welcome addition to your collection. - 'The Art of KPop Demon Hunters' Available Digitally for Free, Coming Physically February 2026
November 29th 2025 KPop Demon Hunters quickly became a cultural hit when it released in the summer, winning over viewers with its catchy music, stunning animation, and performances. Looking to share more with fans, the artwork that helped make the movie happen is explored in The Art of KPop Demon Hunters , a new book coming next year, but not before you can enjoy all of its contents online right now. Reported first by Cartoon Brew , the 142-page book can be viewed online here , with the option to play music from the movie as you scroll through the pages. The book unsurprisingly has a large focus on costumes, with the many outfits showcased throughout. As well as this, there is also art for the characters themselves, location designs, weapon concepts, and keyframes of moments from the movie. The colours and art styles across the book are spectacular, so fans will no doubt enjoy this new look at the art from Sony Pictures Animation's art team. It also gives insights from the artists and creators behind the movie, detailing their goals and decisions for the designs seen on the pages. Physical collectors need not fear though, as on January 1st 2026, you will be able to place a pre-order for the book, with fulfilments beginning February 1st. The book comes as a paperback and is being sold by Nucleus on their website, which you can find here - The Art of KPop Demon Hunters pre-order page . It's certainly unusual for an entire book be shown online for free like this, but I happen to have some insight into this as someone with a YouTube channel of flip throughs! The videos I post, though are not high resolution digital pages, work as great previews for those that are interested in a book, but want to see what they are buying first. The wonderful thing about art is that you can enjoy it endlessly, so getting a preview in no way takes away from the value of the physical copy. It's also a great way for those that may not own artbooks to get interested in adding one to their shelf. For a movie as popular as KPop Demon Hunters , I like the fanservice of making this available to the masses and I expect it will help drive sales of the physical book too. I am surprised though that they haven't gone with a mass market artbook, partnering with Abrams Books as Sony Pictures Animation did before for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: The Art of the Movie . It would no doubt be a huge seller, but this mass access approach might have felt better suited for this film. KPop Demon Hunters is an animated action-fantasy film that follows the popular K-pop girl group 'Huntrix', who are also secretly demon hunters. They are onstage global idols, but but night they battle supernatural forces threatening humanity. The mix of fast-paced fight scenes, vibrant music, and creative choreography, as well as blending Korean pop-culture with fantasy action, helped make it a massive hit. KPop Demon Hunters was released on Netflix in June 2025 and became their most-watched original title and has won multiple awards. Marvel Studios' The Infinity Saga – Spider-Man: Homecoming – The Art of the Movie is a 256-page hardcover with art for the characters, costumes, locations, technology, and more for the movie. As is tradition for Marvel, these are showcased alongside insights into the movie and design approach from the creative team and artists. The new book has all of the original content of the Marvel published original, but comes in a smaller size and without a slipcase. However, these new releases come with better paper, improved binding, and a higher quality print finish too, making them the best way to enjoy the art. These versions are perfect for newer fans and those that missed out before, as some of the older books can be harder to come by now. - 'The Art and Making of Daggerheart' Coming for Critical Role's Tabletop Role-Playing Game

A new artbook listing has appeared online for Daggerheart , the tabletop role-playing game from Critical Role's publishing company Darrington Press. The Art and Making of Daggerheart is an interesting new book, but it's release date is currently unclear. The book was spotted on the website of publisher Titan Books and shows a release date of March 4th 2027, an usually long way off for an official listing. However, other listings in Europe, such as on German site Thalia , have it coming May 19th 2026 from publisher Insight Editions. Titan Books is often the UK publisher for books from Insight Editions, so it's only the date that is strange, but as it's a new listing it could just be a placeholder. Without a product page from Insight Editions to confirm, we can only speculate, but May 19th 2026 is likely correct based on how far off it is. The 256-page hardcover is fully detailed already, coming with an official description and cover art, as seen above. It will feature a look at the creation of the game, alongside insights and interviews with the developers for details on how it was created. It is an interesting release, because artbooks for TTRPGs aren't in abundance, but Dagerheart's popularity will no doubt put this on the wishlist of many players. The UK pricing is £39.99, a standard price for a book of this size and very likely to be around $45/ $50 in the US. The story of the creation of the fantasy role-playing game is authored by Carlos Cisco, giving readers a peak behind the curtain at its journey from inception to release, all with the help of interviews conducted with Darrington Press. Of course, no artbook is complete without the art itself, and this book will share hundreds of pieces that include character art, world building concepts, and more. All of this is presented in an oversized book, coming in at 32.4cm x 23.6cm. The book is currently only featured on a handful of European websites, including Amazon UK. Other websites, including Amazon in other regions, have no listing for the book yet, but expect listings to begin appearing soon that will also confirm the publication date. Daggerheart was released in May of 2025 from Darrington Press and combines the use of dice and cards to bring the stories of the players to life, adding tactics to the game while making it easy for newcomers to jump in. The two dice role for Hope and Fear, empowering the players or the game master, while the cards grant abilities and help level up characters. This is all alongside a book that helps to build worlds and stories for people at all levels of experience. The rulebook and playing cards come with stunning fantasy illustrations, making an artbook like this a no-brainer to release to fans wanting more. The Art and Making of Daggerheart is not out for a 6 months at the earliest, so any updates before then will be reported here. - The Art of Fable Legends: An Artbook for a Cancelled Game
April 23rd 2025 Artbooks often give fans a look at the development for the designs you see on screen, from early sketches to the finished piece, but can also offer a glimpse at what didn’t get used at all. These insights can be the most interesting part of an artbook, to see what could have been, but was left on the cutting room floor. In the case of The Art of Fable Legends though, the entire book is a rare instance of everything being unused, because the game was never officially released. This is more than just an artbook, it's a history piece of a game and studio that are no more. Known best for the Fable series that began in 2002, but also the real-time strategy games Black and White, Lionhead Studios was a UK based team created in 1997. It was co-founded by Peter Molyneux, a somewhat polarizing name in the gaming industry, along with Mark Webley, Tim Rance and finally Steve Jackson, who also co-founded Games Workshop. Microsoft then bought the company in 2006, at a time when they were struggling financially. Sadly though, despite Fable being a big name in the industry and the studio being held in high regard, it was closed in 2016, following the cancellation of Fable Legends. What Happened to Fable Legends? Lionhead Studios released Fable: The Journey in 2012, a Kinect game that was given mixed reviews from critics. Even after this reception, they were committed to the franchise and development began the same year on Fable Legends. It was set to be a free-to-play online game in which 4 players work together to defeat enemies, while another acts as the villain, setting traps and placing the enemies to stop them in their path. This was a departure from the original Fable trilogy, as those were single player role-playing games, making this a big swing. Although they had already ventured into other genres within the franchise, with the aforementioned on-the-rails Kinect game and the beat ’em up Fable Heroes, this was a bigger and more expensive project, being made with a hefty budget of $75 million dollars. The game was officially announced in August of 2013 and its gameplay shown for the first time the following year in June. Later on, a closed beta took place in October of 2014, with the game set for release in 2015. While this was happening and as reported later on, development was not going well. Members of the team were also unhappy with the project, wanting to work on a tradition Fable game and not a multiplayer title. There were plans to make Fable 4 following the release of Legends though, giving the less enthusiastic developers some light at the end of the multiplayer tunnel to hold out for. That tunnel proved to be longer than anticipated though, as Fable Legends was delayed into 2016. Worse yet, it didn’t take long for the devastating news of the cancellation to follow, coming in March of 2016. The beta was still running at this time, which was then closed the following month to allow the time for players to get refunds for any money spent on in-game content. The decision was made by Microsoft to cancel the game, not Lionhead Studios, who were seemingly at the mercy of their owners after being put on the multiplayer project and also the previous Kinect game, both of which were outside of their expertise. The reason for the cancellation has been reported to be a mixture of high production costs, failure to meet targets and lack of player interest, each of which alone can get a game cancelled. Sadly for the team, the decision to cancel the game came hand in hand with the closure of the studio. Microsoft was making changes to its investment plans and Lionhead Studios was a victim of this shift. It remained open until the following month, due to UK law requiring a notice period, before it closed its doors for the last time in April. The Art of Fable Legends The artbook boom for video games started during the PS3 and Xbox 360 era and has not relented since. It is common for all big releases to come with artbooks and Fable Legends was no different. Unlike recent years, artbooks would almost always come out around the same time as the game and would be listed early for pre-orders. The Art of Fable Legends followed this trend, but was unusually stubborn with its publishing date. While it is the norm now for an artbook to not even be announced, let alone released, until after players have got their hands on a game, there are exceptions to this. For example, The Art of Assassin’s Creed Shadows came out just days after the game, but this did mean that each time Ubisoft delayed the game, Dark Horse delayed the book. The Art of Fable Legends, published by Titan Books in this case, ignored this thinking and did not shift the date. I was one of the people that pre-ordered the book, so upon hearing the news the game had been cancelled into 2016, I was expecting the book release to move too. Its 2015 release remained unchanged though and it surprisingly did indeed ship on November 27th 2015. As is sometimes the case with Titan Books, a signed Limited Edition was also available with a slipcase. It was a highly unusual move, selling an artbook for a game that was not available to buy is odd and comes with the risk of spoilers. The only people that could really appreciate it were the developers and those that took part in the closed beta. The book remained available too, it was never delisted or switched back to pre-order status. Little did anyone know at the time, that this was about to become an even more interesting gem in an artbook collection just months later. Fast forward to March 2016 and owners of the book not only had the art for a cancelled game, but a physical release of some of the last work ever created by Lionhead Studios. Value and Quality It’s very common for an artbook to become rare, they sell through their print run and leave people to deal with the sometimes predatory and volatile second hand markets. However, the strange nature of The Art of Fable Legends continued as it avoided this fate. Having been aware of the artbook, I kept my eye on the listings out of curiosity, only to find that the book was neither selling out or even holding its value. Despite the game being cancelled in part due to a lack of player interest, one would have thought that this book would be viewed as a piece of gaming history, yet it appeared to be overlooked. It's now 2025 and the book is still available. You can buy it second hand at low prices, but more shockingly, it isn't difficult to find new copies online. In the case of Amazon UK, it is often discounted and can be bought for under £30. As a collector and someone that now does reviews, I can say the book does a lot well too. It has some brilliant art if you like the style, with early sketches included for the characters and enemies, as well as some fantastic environment art. It has great insights from the team and a good use of space too. It does however lack artist credits on the page and some of the images could be a little smaller to fit more in, but it's a solid release overall. I'm particularly fond of the enemy art and am a fan of the style and the inclusion of early sketches. Fable always had a charm to the visual design of Albion and its inhabitants, it's style oozing with personality and a strong colour palette that avoids the browns and greys of other games in the genre. That same approach was taken with this entry, as seen on the preview pages featured here. The comments from the team speak to the specific characters and art choices, a fascinating read knowing that it was intended for players, but is now a curtain pull on the making of an unfinished game. It features insights that include the approach to the designs for an asymmetrical game, its lore and personalities of its heroes and enemies. So many games get cancelled, Lionhead themselves had at least 12, but it's rare you can sit with information and art like this for one of them. The Future of Fable With Lionhead Studios gone and Microsoft still owning the IP, a fourth game is now finally happening and set for release in 2026. Playground Games is behind the development that will see the series return to its roots as an action RPG. The artbook boom of previous generations created a strong and persistent market for more of them, so there is a good chance there will be an artbook for the new game too. Microsoft and the studios it owns and works with have a good track record of creating them, including AAA games like Gears of War and Halo, but also smaller titles like Ori and the Will of the Wisps and ReCore. The Art of Fable Legends is also proof in itself of the potential for a new artbook. Those out there with artbook collections, fans of the Fable series or an interest in unique gaming products can find The Art of Fable Legends online and add it to your shelf. The circumstances around its release are unlikely to be seen again, especially for a book that remains at a reasonable price 10 years later. Perhaps the lack of player interest was hugely understated, as what could have been a rare item can be found discounted and readily available. Being a fan of Fable myself, I hope the series finds new life in the upcoming game and that the new art team can share their work in ‘The Art of Fable 4’. - Book Review - The Infinity Saga – Spider-Man: Homecoming – The Art of the Movie
November 27th 2025 The debut of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was hugely anticipated, so when it stuck the superhero landing and his own movie was set to follow shortly after, fans were understandably excited. That movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming , was a big hit as well and it brought with it an artbook in 2017. Thanks to Titan Books, that book has returned as part of their ongoing Infinity Saga series. Marvel Studios’ The Infinity Saga – Spider-Man: Homecoming – The Art of the Movie was published on November 11th 2025 and is a reissue of the original book for those that missed out before. Thanks to the kindness of Titan Books providing a copy, I’m able to give my thoughts on this new release and also compare it the original, one I thoroughly enjoyed! This review is rearranged like others in the series, to do the comparison last. Content This book comes with 256 pages and features a wealth of concept art that Spider-Man lovers will no doubt enjoying poring over. It has all of the content of the 2017 original book, titled Spider-Man: Homecoming – The Art of the Movie , with its good mix of concept art for the costumes, locations, and technology of the movie, as well as a large amount of keyframes too. Marvel Studios always impress with the balance of art they show, catering to the strengths of each release, with costumes and key moments being the heavier focus here. Spider-Man himself gets a large amount of page space dedicated to his iconic look. There are 18 spreads of art for the teenage hero, exploring his suit design and colours, the web shooters, the technology within the suit, and how it works. You can never get bored of looking at designs for Peter Parker’s costume, because as Kevin Feige puts it, it’s “one of the best graphic-designed elements in the history of graphic design.” The sketches and art for his movement and types of webbing are a highlight for me, they don’t carry the realism of the suit concepts and some are even exaggerated, but they carry a lot of character and humour too. Vulture also has a large chapter that focuses on his own wingsuit, with a large range of ideas on show, all of which look incredible. This technology-based version of the character looked fantastic in the movie and the art that made it happen gets a great showcase here. The pages for Iron Man also provide enjoyable art too, though there is no surprise here given how long the team have been working on his look! Locations and technology are shared with detailed artwork that is impressive throughout, from the school and Adrian Toome’s hideout, to the many Chitauri-powered weapons, the talent on show is brilliant as always. An end chapter for the credit sequence created by Perception NYC is also a nice inclusion, showcasing their fun mix of art styles. My favourite part of the book is the large amount of keyframes and their various art styles. Moments of the movie are captured in incredible pieces of art, including web-swinging, fights between Spider-Man and the Vulture, and the Staten Island Ferry set piece. They capture so much movement and emotion, even in the places where the art is a little looser, focusing on capturing the feel of a scene, rather than the little details. I’m particularly fond of the pieces from Alexander Mandradjiev, because they capture the mood of a moment with a unique style that look like oil paintings in places. Alongside the artwork are insights from Director Jon Watts, producers, artists, costume designers, and more. Hearing from the artists themselves is always something Marvel has done well and the notes on the design approach and influences from Ryan Meinerding, Rodney Fuentebella, Jon Eaves, and more, is always an interesting read. Like previous artbook, there isn't an essay to read, but more than enough to give valuable and engaging details. Credits A long-time tradition of Marvel is to credit each image on the page (the following pages for full image spreads) and The Infinity Saga – Spider-Man: Homecoming - The Art of the Movie continues this too. This is done with their last name, with a list of both the full names and each page the artists are featured on at the back. It’s a great way to do it and highlights Marvel’s continued commitment to shining the spotlight on their talented team. Build Quality Moving onto the comparison to this book and the 2017 original, I’ll start with the format. Again, this new version from Titan Books does not have a slipcase, as it instead uses a dustjacket. The slipcases were great, but this does increase the pricing and The Infinity Saga series has done a good job of being affordable, so it’s a welcome trade-off. The new hardcover is also a little smaller, coming in at 24cm x 27cm, as opposed to original’s 24.5cm x 29.5cm size without the slipcase. It’s a small difference that doesn’t change much on the pages, as there are only little adjustments made to image sizes. It’s still a good size and gives the art inside a strong showcase. The paper quality is also better, the pages are thicker as seen in other artbooks. Marvel to this day chooses thinner paper, and while still acceptable, it’s not as good as what you find here and elsewhere. This also makes the new release thicker too, but fortunately the binding is very secure. There is a little image loss in the centre fold, but not to the extent that it takes away from the art. The cover art on The Infinity Saga – Spider-Man: Homecoming - The Art of the Movie mirrors that of the original too, because the dustjacket features the art from the slipcase, and the cover underneath shares the yearbook design for Peter’s high school just like the original. The biggest improvement again is the print quality, one that is huge for me personally. Titan Books has done well to brighten the artwork that was previously too dark in the Marvel original, an ongoing issue with their books even today. You can see a comparison below, with the Titan Book’s version at the top and the Marvel published book below, this again makes it the best way to enjoy the concept art. Use of Space The page layouts are kept the same as the original book and this is not a bad thing. Marvel have always been very good at page design, making the most of the space and keeping everything clean and readable. As mentioned, small adjustments are made for the smaller size, but these are very minimal. Short and sweet for this part of the review. Value The Infinity Saga - Spider-Man: Homecoming - The Art of the Movie has an RRP of $50/ £35, a good price for the book. The 2017 version isn’t as rare as other entries in the original run, but it can fluctuate for a new copy. However, this doesn’t account for discounts, which are very common for The Infinity Saga series. Using Amazon again to compare for consistency, in the US it can be found at 20% off, and in the UK at 23% off, a very good price drop for the same book with quality improvements. These will come and go of course, and those elsewhere will have to check your local store, but for a 256-page hardcover filled with great art, this is a very good deal. Verdict Marvel Studios’ The Infinity Saga – Spider-Man: Homecoming – The Art of the Movie is another superb volume of art that showcases the talent of the team at studio, this time focusing on everybody’s favourite webslinger. The strong costume design and wealth of keyframe concepts makes this a strong entry in the long series of artbooks, with Titan Books making this an improvement over the original at an unbeatable price. As a fan of the original book, I’m happy to see this reissue has made it not only available for more people, but adds the same improvements implemented with those that came before too. - 'Tunic: Design Works' Coming in 2026 from Lost in Cult
October 31st 2025 Determined to fill their 2026 release schedule, UK book publisher Lost in Cult has announced a second Design Works books this month, this time for 2022's action-adventure game Tunic ! Tunic: Design Works has been made in partnership with the game's developer Isometricorp Games and publisher Finji to deliver a look at the development of the award-winning indie game. As always from Lost in Cult, the book was announced on social media, with pre-orders going live at the same time for those wanting more from the world of the sword-wielding fox. It comes with over 300 pages and can be ordered on their website ahead of its Q4 2026 release. The book is authored by Christian Donlan and will take players through the seven-year development of the game from Andrew Shouldice, from doodles on a page to its release in 2022. Through insights and details from the developer, Tunic: Design Works explored the locations, mechanics, themes, and more for the game, giving fans a peak at how the game went from an idea to a BAFTA award winner. As well as the written insights, this release will also include a look at the original sketchbooks from Shouldice, featuring his doodles, notes, checklists, and more, offering a unique look at the documents that help create a video game. As expected, there are again a couple of versions of the book available to pre-order, a Standard Edition and a Deluxe Edition. The Deluxe Edition is only available for a limited time, but can be pre-ordered until the 8th of January. Both versions of Tunic: Design Works are expected to start shipping Q4 of 2026. Tunic is a charming action-adventure game with an isometric camera view, developed by Isometricorp Games and published by Finji in 2022. You play as an anthropomorphic fox carrying a sword and shield in a mysterious ruined land. The player works to uncover secrets in the game's forests, dungeons and temples, while building an in-game manual of maps, lore, and more. The game was inspired by classic titles such as The Legend of Zelda , combining nostalgia with modern visuals and gameplay design.
