'Outer Wilds: Design Works' Returns for Another Loop This October with New Listing

Mobius Digital Games created something special with Outer Wilds, delivering a unique solar system that resets every 22 minutes when the sun explodes. It became a beloved game that had players hooked on discovering secrets and figuring out how to reach its end.

In 2025, Outer Wilds: Design Works from Lost in Cult delivered a superb dive into the making of the game and its artwork, perfect for fans that wanted a peak behind the curtain. Those that missed out on that release now have a new chance to enjoy the book, with a retail version arriving this year.

Spotted on Amazon, the new version comes from publisher Expanse in partnership with Lost in Cult and comes with the above book cover. It is set for release on October 8th 2026 in the UK and November 24th in the US and Canada. It is set to feature the same content found in the Lost in Cult original, but as a hardcover at slightly smaller dimensions at 19.5 x 25.2 cm, with an RRP of £30 or $40.

For those that don't know, the Design Works series from Lost in Cult are in-depth looks into video games, often for more niche or obscure titles, with interviews, design documents, artwork, and more. Outer Wilds: Design Works is no different, offering a wonderful look at early concepts alongside details such as the early ideas, builds, the gameplay, and music. Author Chris Schilling did a wonderful job at making the book feel like a celebration of the hit game, with the art and page design also making it hard to put down. Outside of the listings found across multiple Amazon regions, any other changes other than the publisher, cover art, and size, are unknown, as there has been no public posting about the book by either publisher or Mobius Games. It's worth noting that this is the only version of the book being re-released in this way, because the Deluxe Edition that was sold on Lost in Cult's website was only available for a limited time.

Beyond Outer Wilds, there have been many other Design Works books, some of which have been released, with others available to pre-order, such as the recently announced Terraria: Design Works based on the 2D survival game. These books are available exclusively through Lost in Cult and have Deluxe Editions available for those pre-ordering early, coming with fantastic extras, from soundtracks and prints, to physical versions of in-world mini-games.
