- Book Review: Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk: Attorney At Law – The Art of the Series
February 27th 2025 She-Hulk got her introduction to the MCU in the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney At Law in August of 2022. The show introduced new characters and bought some favourites back too, so I was looking forward to adding another artbook to the collection with their designs. Almost 3 years later, Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk: Attorney At Law – The Art of the Series finally locked in its March 4th release date. It’s hard for me to do a review without mentioning to disaster of a release this book has had. If you’ve stumbled onto this book and review, you’ve been spared from the anticipation of expecting it back in February of 2024, only to have it delayed over and over again. This book had at least 6 date changes, with no indication of why. The show didn’t have the best viewing numbers for a Marvel production either, meaning potential buyers of the book would already be limited and these delays would only reduce that number, as people move on very quickly with more MCU content always around the corner. I hope at some point this will change as the last 22 books have had delays, with one seemingly cancelled. But, is this book worth picking up after such a long wait? I’ll go through my usual 5 points with my thoughts on each; build quality, content, credits, use of space and value. Build Quality As already mentioned, this book was heavily delayed, so does not come in the new format with a slipcase and lithographs, as seen in the artbook for Deadpool & Wolverine . The delays created a crossover, so keep that in mind if you’re expecting extras or wondering why it is cheaper to buy. Regardless, the build quality here is great as expected from a Marvel Studios’ book and I’ve yet to have an issue with any of them in this format. It comes with a hardcover, the now standard 224 pages and a great print quality. The pages are not as thick as you would get in most artbooks, but the pages are long, so the flexibility helps. It’s a good size at 11.54 x 9.66 inches (29.31 x 24.54 cm) and the binding is also very solid again too. Content Keeping consistent in the content as well, you’ll find art here for the characters, costumes, key moments and locations. Marvel Studios has always had some of the best artists in the industry and many familiar names return for She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. These names include Ryan Meinerding, Jackson Sze, Wesley Burt, Imogene Chayes, Rodney Fuentebella and Jana Schirmer. Their work is superb and those that have bought previous artbooks will know what to expect from them. I personally love the art and more is always welcome. This book leans heavily on character and costume art, as expected. The show didn’t feature strange locations or lots of technology, so the art naturally focuses more on the people and moments in the story. She-Hulk herself gets a lot page space, though expected, she has more than other characters that have headlined projects. You’ll find plenty of art exploring how Jennifer Walters would look after transforming into her alter-ego, as well as what she would wear for different moments in the series. Fans of the character will have a lot to enjoy. The volume of art for other characters is mixed, however. Hulk, for example, is featured in key art, but his own concepts are less exciting, there’s not much for him and it’s all in one pose with different clothing. Titania doesn’t get much either considering she had a bigger role in the show and Daredevil gets only one spread. He has his own series coming though, so more art may be on the way in another book. In contrast, characters with smaller roles sometimes get more pages, like Leapfrog who get six pages and Porcupine who gets four. I would have liked to have seen more for Daredevil and Titania, maybe for Wong and Madisynn (who is completely absent) too. Other characters get a better showcase though. I like that there is a section toward the end highlighting the watercolor art seen in the credits by artist Kagan McLeod. It was a nice feature of the show, so I was happy to see it being included here too. I feel the art delivered in this book, it has some fun concepts depicting Jennifer’s life as She-Hulk and covers the big moments of the show. It also doesn’t suffer from the dark prints seen in many of the previous books in the series, which is a welcome improvement. The text throughout highlights the story beats, design choices, inspirations and character motivations. A lot of the information comes from the showrunners and artists, offering their own personal thoughts and goals for the art and show. It even includes comments from actors too, including Mark Ruffalo and Charlie Cox. None of this surprises me though and that’s not a bad thing. The books have always done this well in my opinion, offering good insights without becoming a novel. I particularly like hearing what look the artists were trying to achieve, as well as how they worked off the back of each other, as well as the comics the show is based on. Credits Marvel Studios has always done right by their artists and designers, putting their names on every page, so you can see who did what. This book also lists their names in the back again, with the page numbers they are featured on (seen in the slides above). This should be the standard for all artbooks, so this is always a win for these releases. Use of Space For all of the previous MCU artbooks, I could write the same thing about how well they utilize space. They don’t waste any and the layouts are clear and readable. This book does all those things, but falls flat on something I’ve not had an issue with before, which is images crossing the centre fold. Other books do this of course, but there are instances here where an image isn’t fully displayed as the centre fold has swallowed some of it. It’s noticeable early on and you can see an example of this below. It doesn’t happen a lot, but it’s a shame for the times it does. Value As this is the old format, you won’t be stung with a $100 RRP to include a slipcase, which I do prefer. This full retail price for this book is $60/ £54, which is a little more than you would pay for most artbooks. Many would be around $50/ £45 and often with higher quality paper and more pages, but this is not unusual for Marvel. The only defence I can give for this is that the consistent high quality of the books creates less risk that you will receive a bad product. I use Amazon for reviews to stay consistent and have seen in both the US and UK, the book already has price reductions. At the time of writing this, the book is still up for pre-order, so it’s likely you could find this a little cheaper, which is not unusual. £45/ $50 feels like a good price for one of these books, so might be worth shopping around to save some pennies. Verdict I think this is a great book for fans of the show and character, it offers a lot of insights and great art many will enjoy. Fellow collectors of the series will be happy too, as it maintains the high standard of the previous books and makes for a nice addition to the shelf. The centre fold issue and choices on quantity of art for some characters is a minor pain, but the book has also avoided the dark print problem. It delivers on many of the things I look for and if you find a slightly reduced price, you can’t go wrong on this one. It’s a shame the release was delayed over a year, as it’s a book I would recommend to MCU fans, but the number of people interested has likely dwindled. Can I see where all the extra time has gone in this book? Not at all, as there’s nothing out of the ordinary here to indicate why it took almost 3 years after the show aired to arrive. I just hope Marvel does better in the future, because it is worthy of being seen by more people and could have been while the show was still fresh in everybody’s mind. - Book Review: The Art of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim
February 25th 2025 I don’t need to introduce you to The Lord of the Rings, it’s arguably the most famous series in the fantasy genre. It’s known the world over, first for the books from Tolkien, then for the award-winning movies. So, let’s talk about the art instead, because with the release of The War of the Rohirrim, we have more art to dive into and some can be seen presented in this new book. The Art of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim , from HarperCollins, is a showcase of the art that helped create the anime movie. It was released February 18th in the US and February 27th in the UK and other regions. But, does it deliver the goods, especially for a series with a long and rich history of art and incredible artists? My reviews are broken down into 5 points; build quality, content, credits, use of space and value. I’ll give breakdowns for each and my thoughts on them. You can also find a flip through preview and page photos below. Build Quality The book comes with a hardcover and 256 pages, the binding feels strong and the paper is high quality. It’s a good size too, 10.27 x 11.66 inches (30.1cm x 26cm), allowing for a good amount of content. It’s what I have come to expect from an artbook, so this is all good so far. I have one issue though, which some people will understand, depending on where you live. HarperCollins does not shrink wrap the book, which has caused the issue seen in the image below. If, like me, you live somewhere that is cold and damp outside (and sometimes inside), then you may recognise the wavy effect on the pages. This is a humidity issue, caused by the pages absorbing moisture from the air and can be a pain to rectify, if it can be. I live in the UK and books don’t like it here, but shrink wrapping stops this from happening during transportation and storage. It’s not ideal to use plastic of course, but this is part of the reason why a lot of artbooks use it. Mine isn't too bad considering it's winter, but on a colder day I have received much worse. Content This book covers a lot in both its text and its art, offering a range of concepts at different stages and in different styles, with deep insights into the movie. To start with the art, you will quickly notice the wide variety of styles. You read early on that the concept artists were told to create concept art as if it were a live action movie. They naturally used artists that worked on the previous movies, like Daniel Falconer (who also wrote and compiled the art for the book) and also legends in the field, Alan Lee and John Howe, both having illustrated Tolkien’s books and also worked on The Lord of the Rings movies as chief conceptual designers. This also means that Weta Workshop are again working on the series, as becomes useful when using the old movie material for refences. Using these artists creates a mix of hand sketches, digital art and the use of 3D, making this book a highlight of how different methods and styles work toward the same goal. It’s not often that the art can vary this much in one book and it’s great to see. Alan Lee for example, uses hand drawn sketches, but art from the team at Weta Workshop utilise more modern methods with digital art techniques. Then of course, there is the anime style, as this is an anime movie after all. The concept artists were told not to worry about the medium, as the team in Japan would translate their work so it can be used for animation. This was done by Sola Digital Arts and their work is featured throughout too. Seeing anime art sharing pages with more realistic concept art and Alan Lee sketches is very odd, but also very cool. This also means that you can visually see how changes are made from the more detailed concept art, to what you see on screen. Sacrifices in complexity have to made for budget and time in animation, but seeing where this is done is much better than just reading about it. As expected, there is art for the characters, settings, weapons, animals, animations, storyboards and more. It covers everything you could want and expect, shown in the order of the movie. This isn’t unusual, it’s just elevated by the talent of the artists and their diverse work. What I also really liked though, was the inclusion of art and photos from The Lord of the Rings movies. These were used as references, so the designs would be in keeping with that world, as it is a part of the same continuity, just set 200 years earlier. The book is also text heavy, more so than a lot of artbooks, but it doesn’t dominate the pages and strikes a nice balance. They didn't take the approach of simply commenting on the art, it talks about finding the teams and artists, the movie characters and story, limitations they had and more. Fans that like the ins and outs of production will enjoy reading this. There are comments from the people that worked on the movie on every page. The writers and producers provide information on character motivations and story decisions, with the artists giving details on the art and designs. The director, Kenji Kamiyama, also provides a lot of insights too. This of course all makes sense, but often artbooks lean toward text for either the art or the story, this however, does both very well. Credits Credits are done by using initials on each page, with a brief image description and a number. That number is also found in the corner of the art, so you know which it is for. A page early on in the book lists the contributors, this is used to find the people the initials are for, as they are noted next to their full names. It’s not my favourite method of doing credits, as it requires memorising the full names for the initials or flipping back and forth if you want to keep checking. It’s also far from the worst, as it allows you to find out who did which specific art piece, unlike in a lot of other books. I’d rather the full names were noted instead though. Use of Space No complaints here as there is no space wasted, nothing is being used as filler or too small to see. It’s mentioned early on that there is enough art to fill multiple books from the teams, but I like what they included and how they spaced it out. When there is little to say about layouts and space, it’s because they did it right! Value This has a full retail price of $50/ £40, which is expected for a movie artbook. I have no problem with this, because for the size and volume of content, you will be getting your moneys worth. This of course doesn’t take into account any discounts you may find online. I use Amazon for my reviews to stay consistent and shortly after release in the US, and on pre-order in the UK, it is already discounted. So, there’s a good chance you can get this for around $40/ £35 or less on sale or by shopping around. Verdict If you are fan of the movie and wanting deep insights and art, you can’t go wrong here. You learn a lot about the making of the anime and the amount of art certainly doesn’t disappoint. I really like the variety of styles that is mixed together throughout and found interesting information that added to my appreciation of both the movie and the people involved. A couple of minor complaints aside, I would feel comfortable recommending this to The Lord of the Rings fans! - The Fantastic Four: First Steps Artbook Listed Online... But It's Not All Good News
February 20th 2025 An eagle eyed artbook fan has spotted the first and only listing for The Fantastic Four: First Steps artbook, but the details of the book are cause for concern. I've been critical of Marvel, a piece could be dedicated to their disastrous handling of the artbook releases, but now they could potentially be making it worse with Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps - The Art and Making of the Movie , if the information on the book is correct. The listing was sent to me and can be found on Penguin Random House here . The image above is used for the book, certainly a placeholder as is normal and expected, until the final cover is revealed. The other details on the listing begin to look different to previous releases though, as I'll now explain. To start, the title of the book is Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps - The Art and Making of the Movie. The 'and Making of' is new, never seen before in the series, which has been published alongside the very first MCU movies. This would imply additional content, as they already provide insights from the visual development teams, so maybe there will be a content change too. All of this sounds fine right? But, here is the big issue... the price. It has been something I've taken issue with for the Deadpool & Wolverine , Agatha All Along , Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World artbooks. Those are listed at a RRP of $100/ £90. This new one is even higher at $150. The price of the ones mentioned above is already a sticking point, as they almost doubled the old price to include a slipcase and lithographs, not included in the previous books post-Endgame. However, I don't feel it brings enough value to justify the increase from $60 to $100. You can read more on this in my review of Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine: The Art of the Movie, found here. With another 50% price hike, this really needs to justify its value, because this is usually reserved for collector's editions, not for the only version of the book. Even then, they are often much cheaper. Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine: The Art of the Movie had already increased the price of the Marvel Studios artbooks The page count looks like the way in which they may be justifying this. It is currently stated to be 400 pages. This would be a big leap from the previous cap of 224, in place from the Black Widow artbook, to the upcoming Thunderbolts* artbook. But this doesn't work for me, 300 - 400 pages should have been included as part of the last price increase to make them competitive on the artbook market. More pages are needed in the books, but not with this trade-off. It's worth noting however, there are a number of reason this could change. First, because details change all the time, it could be placeholder information to get the book on the website before details are confirmed. Also of note, is that no other website has it listed, so they could have jumped the gun on making it public. Sites like Amazon are often the earliest to get books up and they have no listing at this time. There is also further evidence of this, as the Google search result uses an image for the incorrect book. Lastly, there is no listing for a Daredevil: Born Again book, which should be listed first as Marvel does them in order, or at least around the same time. I did think the details on Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine: The Art of the Movie could be incorrect though, as the price seemed too high, but it ended up being true. If the listing information is correct, especially in the current economy, Marvel will be pushing out even more buyers with this price. Sticker shock alone has me questioning if I should add this to the collection, even when I have all the others. I can only hope this is not true, but Marvel seem hell-bent on ruining their line of artbooks with pricing, endless delays and the current page cap. A real shame, as the content is consistently very high in quality with art from incredible artists. Should these details be confirmed or changed, I will update you here! - Upcoming Artbook Rereleases
February 20th 2025 A lot of artbooks that have been released are now hard to come by, they sell through their stock and can end up being very rare and expensive. For the vast majority of artbooks, there is only one print run, making almost all of them the first and only edition. When there are releases then, they are worth highlighting and 2025 already has a bunch of these coming. Check them out below and keep them on your watch list, so you don't miss out a second time! Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar The original copy of Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar was released back in 2004, which is pretty early for the world of video game artbooks. It came with 288 pages of art and commentary about the making of the game from the team at Valve. This was published before the two add-on episodes were released, so the content is for the base game only. You can still find this book online, but it could hurt your bank account. In 2025 the book is getting a rerelease, as announced for the 20th anniversary of the game. Better yet, it will feature additional material, including art for Episode 1 and 2, as well as unused art and ideas for never the released, Episode 3. This makes is not only a rerelease, but an expansion with details fans won't want to miss, especially given that the missing third DLC has been a talking point in gaming for a long time. Last week the gaming world was informed of the passing of Viktor Antonov, the art director on Half-Life 2. You will find his work in this book, a reminder of the legacy he leaves behind, especially with this being such an iconic game. He was only 52 when he passed, but leaves behind the worlds he helped create, which no doubt players will enjoy for years to come. As well as this game, he also worked on Dishonored, DOOM, Fallout 4, Wolfenstein and Prey, among others. This book will serve as another way to enjoy his talent as an artist. No exact date has been given in 2025 for when it will become available, but you can read the full details, along with everything else included in the celebration of the 20th anniversary, on the official website here. Okami Official Complete Works The original release of Okami Official Complete Works was back in 2006 and was released in Japanese. As is often the case, it took some time to be translated for the West and the English edition was eventually published by Udon in June 2008. It is a showcase of the art for the game, from Capcom and Clover Studio, with the Japanese watercolor inspiration found throughout. While copies are still around at different prices, a book this old isn't always in the best condition, made worse by the fact it was paperback. These were always prone to coming apart at the binding, but this is now being resolved. Udon are publishing the book again, but this time as a hardcover, with shipments currently expected in April. It can only be pre-ordered on the Udon official store however ( found here ), so keep this is mind for when it comes to shipping, as they are based in Canada. This is also timely as the sequel was recently announced the The Game Awards, though that game is likely a long way off from getting into the hands of players. Marvel Studios' The Infinity Saga Artbooks With Marvel still publishing artbooks for the new movies and shows, the handling of their rereleases was given to Titan Books. The first book was published in November of 2023, as part of the new 'Marvel Studios' The Infinity Saga' series, with 9 having been released so far. The entire Infinity Saga series is due to be reprinted, including 2 of the 'Road to' books, making this a huge set for fans. The Marvel Studios artbooks come highly recommended, they feature some of the best art and artists, with great presentation in each book too. Some of them can reach page counts of over 300, which gives people a lot of art to pore over. The new versions are slightly smaller than the originals and without a slipcase, but the price point gives them incredible value. Currently on Amazon, you can pre-order the books for £30/ $40, which doesn't include discounts that are often placed on the books. This value for money can't be beaten, especially as the original books can get up to triple digits with the pricing on second hand markets. This is the perfect time to pick up the books and there are currently another 9 announced for this year. If you want to see more on the books, check out my comparison from last year of Marvel Studios' The Infinity Saga - The Avengers: The Art of the Movie to the original release. This does mean however, that the price is very reasonable and that makes them great value for money. As expected, they are full of early and unused concept and key art for the heroes, villains, settings and more. The artists that have worked for Marvel Studios are some of the best in the industry and these books are great showcases of that. You also get insights from the teams too. The third book is notable because it is one of the two 'Road to' books being rereleased. This was published as a compilation book for Avengers: Infinity War and is full of the character art for those featured in the movie. The art shown is from their previous appearances in the MCU up to Infinity War. If you want to know more about the differences in these books and the originals, check out my YouTube video below. Any updates on the books will be published here along with future listings in the series. - Out Today: The Marvel Comics Covers of Jack Kirby Volume 1
February 18th 2025 Available now, in stores and online, is an artbook full of comic covers from Marvel legend Jack Kirby. The Marvel Comics Covers of Jack Kirby Volume 1 has arrived from publisher Dark Horse and covers 4 years of his work creating art for iconic characters, presented in a hardcover book with 184 pages. As seen on the cover below, it will showcase Kirby's art from 1961 - 1964 and will feature over 175 comic covers presented in full on each page. This also includes text with the issue number and any information of note, such as a characters first appearance. Jack Kirby is one of the biggest names in comic books, his career dates back to the 1930's and he has worked for many companies, including Timely Comics, where he co-created Captain America, before they would later become Marvel Comics. During his career he would also work on DC Comics and in animation. His work at Marvel is what he is most famous for and these are the works highlighted in the book. He created and worked on characters that are now household names, including The Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Black Panther and more. You'll find these characters throughout The Marvel Comics Covers of Jack Kirby Volume 1, as seen in a few page previews below. The title of the book includes 'Volume 1' and it only covers 4 years of his work, an indication that more of these books are planned by Marvel and Dark Horse. This is no surprise given the large amount of comics he was a part of at the company. Fans of Jack Kirby will want to snatch this up and seemingly anticipate having a collection of books with future releases planned. This is a great way of owning his artwork printed in high quality, especially as 60 years after they were sold, the original comics are not something you can simply pick off a shelf. For those interested, you can order The Marvel Comics Covers of Jack Kirby Volume 1 here; Tags; #MarvelComics #Marvel #JackKirby #DarkHorse
- Marvel (Unsurprisingly) Delay the Loki Season 2 Artbook
February 17th 2025 A month before the release of Marvel Studios' Loki: Season Two - The Art of The Series , Marvel have delayed the book again, this time into May. I just posted today, as seen below, that the artbook was looking like it would be delayed as it still has no cover art. This is usually a bad sign, as the cover art often comes at least a couple of months before release and not having it this late has historically lead to a delay. The book was due March 18th, but is now coming on May 13th. This is confirmed by online listings, including Amazon US. Some sites are still showing the old date, but these will be updated as seen in the past. The state of Marvel and their inability to hit release dates deserves it's own article, because to be blunt, it's been a complete disaster and there is no excuse at this point. Made more of a shame because the books themselves are often very good and the artists at Marvel Studios are some of the best in the industry. This book was originally due out in October, then December, then February, then March and now May. It is far from an isolated case, no Marvel published book since the last entry for the Infinity Saga, Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Far From Home - The Art of the Movie, has hit its initial release date. The artbook that is out this month for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was due out a year ago. You can read about the mess of that release in my article here - Marvel Studios' She-Hulk Artbook Delayed... Again . Publishing Marvel Studios' Loki: Season Two - The Art of The Series in May would make this release 1 year and 7 months after the second season premiered on Disney+, which can only lead to reducing sales potential from fans. It is also a book without a slipcase, the last of the old format of artbooks, as they now include them with prints. The first artbook to come in this new format has already been published, but as Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine: The Art of the Movie only received one smaller delay, there is now a crossover of book formats. Placeholder art for the book. The book will highlight the concept art for the series, including the characters, settings and more. The releases all feature insights from the art team too, so they can be expected here as well and they are also very good at filling the pages and crediting the artists. Despite the endless delays, when you do finally get their books in your hands, they are fantastic and perfect for Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. I'm also curious to see what will be printed for Kang, as actor for the character, Jonathan Majors, has since been fired from Marvel Studios after being convicted of assault. His character and likeness were present in Marvel Studios' Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania - The Art of The Movie however , which also came after his firing. I have the book on order and will feature previews and a review here in (hopefully) May when my copy arrives. Those interested can pre-order Marvel Studios' Loki: Season Two - The Art of The Series here; Tags; #Loki #MarvelCinematicUniverse #Marvel #MarvelStudios #Disney
- PlayStation State of Play: 3 Potential Artbooks?
February 12th 2025 The State of Play from PlayStation for February 2025 presented a lot of games as expected. With video game artbooks being as popular as ever, I've highlighted a few of the games that I feel are most likely to have one! Monster Hunter Wilds The State of Play opened with Capcom's popular franchise, Monster Hunter. This series is no stranger to artbooks, one being Monster Hunter: World - Official Complete Works for their highest selling game, Monster Hunter: World. They have also had other releases, including illustration books too, making one for this game very likely. Monster Hunter: World - Official Complete Works Borderlands 4 There have already been 2 artbooks for Borderlands. The first, The Art of Borderlands 2 , is a now hard to come by paperback from BradyGames, who later joined with Prima Games. The last book release was The Art of Borderlands 3 from Titan Books. With the last 2 games getting an artbook, I think this one has a strong chance of coming to fruition. If made, it would likely arrive in 2026 at the earliest, as the game is listed for September 23rd 2025. The Art of Borderlands 3 Saros This is the second AAA release from Housemarque and not due until next year, so I wouldn't expect an artbook for a long time. There was one published by Dark Horse in 2024 for their previous game, Returnal. Though it did take more than 3 years after the game release to arrive, The Art of Returnal is great look at the roguelike that is heavy on environment art. This does create the potential for another artbook, but hopefully it doesn't take 3 years, as that would be 2029! The Art of Returnal Possible artbooks? There is a chance for a couple of others from the State of Play worth mentioning, though not safe bets. First is Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, which is coming in August. This is a remake, which decreases the chance of an artbook, but certainly doesn't rule it out. The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection had an untitled artbook (but has been referred to as Metal Gear Solid: Art of the HD Collection) that was included in the special edition. Konami are also no strangers to reprinting art in more than one book, so they could do it again. Some art for Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater was included in the HD Collection book and was then reprinted in The Art of Metal Gear Solid I-IV. There is also an artbook for the last game too, The Art of Metal Gear Solid V. The Art of Metal Gear Solid I-IV is a 2 book set from Dark Horse Stellar Blade also made an appearance with some upcoming content. No artbook has been announced, but I wouldn't be hugely surprised if one was made in the future as the game is very popular. Any artbooks that are announced will be added here, so you can keep track and add more to your collection! Keep and eye on the News section for that and see confirmed future releases on the Upcoming page . - Book Review: Marvel Studios: The Art of Ryan Meinerding
December 29th 2024 For those new to Marvel artbooks or unaware of who Ryan is, it wouldn’t be an understatement to say he is huge part of the success of the biggest franchise in cinema. I discovered Ryan through his work on God of War II for PS2. He, along with others on that series, are the reason I collect and enjoy these books today. Marvel Studios: The Art of Ryan Meinerding is a showcase of his art working for Marvel, from Iron Man 1, through to Wakanda Forever and his role from concept artist to Head of Visual Development. The book comes from Abrams and has over 300 pages of artwork. This is not intended to be an art review, you can decide if you like it yourself in the previews or check out Ryan’s work online, this is a review of the book and presentation of the art. The thing that’s important to note in terms of the art though and the reason this book is dedicated to one artist, is the importance of it. What this book shows is art that shaped the visuals of the MCU. Ryan, along with others like Adi Granov and Phil Saunders, helped do this early on with Iron Man, then continued to guide that beyond the first Avengers movie. Artists come and go, but Ryan has worked on the MCU for over 15 years. I’m personally a big fan and if you enjoy Marvel and the movies, good chance you are too, or will soon be. With that, lets jump into the book! I break each review into 5 points, build quality, content, credits, use of space and value. You can also check out a video review of this from YouTube at the bottom of this page. Build Quality This is a thick hardcover book and in a portrait format, which is unusual for a Marvel Studios artbook. The paper is of high quality too. But, and this is unfortunate, there is potential for a binding issue here. While my copy might be a one off issue & had taken a knock before being sent to me, larger books can suffer from this problem seen below. I’m not a book binder, so I’ll explain this as best I can. When you have a lot of pages, it can with some books, create a lot of flex in the backing the page signatures are attached to. We all know this is to help with opening the pages and book. But, when you have thicker, heavy pages, it can, as it has with this copy, create a page separation when the signatures reach the top of this flex. If you’ve had this happen before, you know that it can be a downward spiral for the book. I never open my books flat to avoid this. Even in videos, each side of the books are slightly raised to protect the binding and spine. I would advise to do the same to any buyers, just to be safe. But, good news and a spoiler for the end of the review, it’s all uphill from here! Content Onto content now then and you get a nice mix of goodies. Concept art, sketches, marketing art, storyboards and key art can be found here. You get a snippets from each part of the process from Ryan. If you collect all of the movie artbooks, and well done if you have, it’s quite the achievement, you’ll have seen some of this art before. But, there is a lot of new stuff here too. Even some of the repeat images are worth seeing again as they can have more room to breathe. You get final designs, development concepts and ideas that didn’t make it into the movies. I’m always a fan of the 'what could have been' concepts, so I’m happy they are here, not that I expected the not to be. The books goes in the order of time, first his history and then it works its way through the movies starting with Iron Man. Some movie sections have more art than others, of course depending on his involvement, with some not appearing at all. It does have a surprise couple of pages for the Daredevil Netflix show, it was due its own book many years ago before being cancelled, so this was great to have included. It also has the first printed works for the She-Hulk show. It ends with Wakanda Forever, work on theme parks and comic covers, totalling 29 projects. The print quality is very good, nothing is too dark and the bright colour images pop off the page. The text covers Ryan's history from his early life, to joining Marvel and the people he worked with. It also highlights an interesting look at how some designs came together with others, decisions he made, as well as what was asked of him too. It’s a look at not just Ryan, but the studio and the movies. The art is definitely the focus here, but I appreciate the writing and Ryan’s comments, as it delivers lots of information without it becoming text heavy. Credits I would talk about artist credits, but there isn’t much to say, it's slapped on the cover of the book after all! There are though a few instances of comic images being used and a handful of pieces that were a collaboration, these are credited on the page as needed. Use of Space As you can see in the previews, pages are filled, text is well placed and there is a mix of image sizes. It does nothing fancy, but it doesn’t need to and it works. There’s a benefit to the portrait orientation because most character art is too, which allows for larger prints of some of them. This can’t be achieved in the individual movie artbooks as they are landscape. It made sense for a books of Ryan’s art to be done this way as he is a character artist. They aren’t all portrait images, but it greatly benefits the majority that are. Value Looking at price, I picked this up for £35 at release, in the US it was $50. This is a very good, because for reference, the artbook for The Marvels, released around the same time, is also the same price, but comes with 100 pages less and I was happy with that book. It’s also half the price of the future movie artbook releases like Deadpool & Wolverine and Brave New World, which are frankly disgracefully priced at $100, again with 100 pages less. I use Amazon as a reference for consistency, but you may find better deals elsewhere. Verdict While I experienced a binding issue as previously noted and got a replacement copy, I still think this book is a must for MCU fans. The art is from one of the best, it’s presented well and gives you a visual and written history of the franchise from the perspective of Ryan. Not only is this book worthwhile if you’re a fan of the art, but the price point is a real win for the book. In a world where for many of us things are becoming increasingly unaffordable, many artbooks remain at a reasonable price and this is certainly one of them. I own the movie artbooks and am very happy with as another edition to the collection. If you are interested in the movie artbooks, have a handful, or find that you aren’t in a position to get them all due to finances or space, this is the perfect alternative. Just keep in mind that Ryan is a character artist, so this is the focus of the book. I hope this book does well and becomes the start of a series, I’d love to see more from other artists! - Book Review: Sea of Stars: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho
February 6th 2025 Sea of Stars was released in 2023 by Sabotage Studio to much praise from both players and critics. It feels both nostalgic and new, with a strong story that keeps players engaged and presented with beautiful pixel art. These visuals are a highlight of the game, so when the artbook, Sea of Stars: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho , was announced by 3dtotal Publishing, it quickly got added to my artbook wishlist. The book was released in 2024 and showcases the art, not just behind the game itself, but also of the concept artist on Sea of Stars, Bryce Kho. The book announcement was my introduction to Bryce and seeing his art online made the book only more enticing. So, I’ll go over the different aspects of this book to see if it delivered like myself and fans hoped! You will find previews below and my YouTube flip though at the bottom of the page. Build Quality This was released as a hardcover with over 250 pages and has the same dimensions as most video game artbooks, such as those released by publishers Dark Horse and Titan Books. This is all a good sign, especially due to the pricing that I will touch on later in the review. The paper and print quality are very good and it has solid binding too. It ticks all the boxes of an artbook for me and I have no concerns that it will have any issues long into the future, so it's off to a great start. The cover itself is worth highlighting, it’s wonderfully designed with art from Bryce and incudes reflective gold elements on the image and for the text. It won my Best Book Cover of 2024 in my award list last year. Content As I mentioned before, I was looking forward to this book after seeing the work of Bryce, but I wont review that here. I’m a fan of his style, both digital and with watercolour and love his use of colours. This book is pact with his stunning art and that alone is enough to draw people in, but this review is for the book, so I’ll speak here about what the book contains. Sea of Stars: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho is broken down into the following; characters, environments, enemies, epilogue and covers. In each one you get to see the different stages of the designs, including sketches and unused concepts. This is not an illustration book, it’s a great look at how an early idea is updated until it makes it to the screen, giving fans a lot to dive into. Characters and enemies make up a large portion of the book, but this is to be expected as the game has a lot of them, though the book overall still feels balanced as the environments get a nice showcase too. Another highlight is the cover section at the back. While it’s not unusual to see art like this, they don’t always include the sketches of different ideas for a game case or magazine, so it’s another extra feature that makes it stand out. There are also pages with character expressions and animation designs, something not always seen in artbooks and a welcome addition. The variety of what’s included paints a full picture of the type of art that was needed to help make the game, rather than just a collection of hand selected images. Another nice little touch are the sprites at the bottom of each page that correspond to the art on the page, so you can see how each one looked in the game. The great content doesn’t stop at the art either, the text used is also well thought out. Rather than descriptions of the art, the approach instead was to include the texts and emails between Bryce Kho and the game director, Thierry Boulanger. These allow readers to see how and why design choices and changes were made in a much more organic way. They often start with a pitch for an idea from Thierry, followed by the response talking about the art on the page, with some exchanges that take you through the changes made. It’s a unique take to let fans know what the thought process was at the time, from the perspective of both director and artist. There are also some comments on occasion from ‘Present-day Bryce’, insights given for the creation of the book that reflect back. Credits Nice and simple for this book, as there is only one artist, you can find the credit on the front cover! Use of Space The high praise continues here, each page is very readable, there’s no wasted space and page layouts change throughout to keep it interesting. The backgrounds add simple use of colours that don’t distract, but prevent a sterile or bland look. The images also vary in size. When this is done right, there isn’t much to say and Sea of Stars: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho did exactly that. Value The pricing of the book was interesting. 3dtotal sell it on their website for £30, which is cheaper than most artbooks. Others typically come in at around £40-£45 ($50-$60) at full retail price. This was surprising given this is a good sized book (24x31cm) with over 250 pages. Even more so when it turns out 3dtotal give away 50% of their profit to charity too, so buying from them becomes more enticing. You can also find this on sites like Amazon, that also offer the book at a great price. When it comes to value then, another positive for this release. For any artbook this size, it would be considered a great deal, but with the quality and thought behind it, it makes it hard for fans to not add this to their basket. Verdict As you can probably guess, this is an excellent book to have in your collection. I would recommend this to fans of the game, Bryce or concept art in general. It was a highlight of book releases in 2024, but also a new favourite of mine too. 3dtotal, Bryce and Sabotage have created a book with made with care, just like the game it is based on, and you feel this when going through it. While there is no perfect book, this belongs in a small group of other great releases that should be used as examples of how to make an artbook! - Capcom Reveal A New Artbook For Release In March
February 7th 2025 Capcom have announced that a new artbook is coming, titled Capcom Key Art Catalogue. Good news for fans is that it's out next month on March 20th, a very short wait! The book is set to cover 300 titles across 40 years of their history. This is a lot of titles, but it's not a small book either, it's A4 in size (210mm x 290mm) and 376 pages. The below includes a few previews of what to expect. As the title and previews suggest, this is a key art book, indicating that unlike 'art of' books, the focus is not concept art, but rather key illustrations. The text will be in both English and Japanese, which will allow the book to release in multiple regions. As is often the case, books will release in Japan first and take some time to be localised to other countries, so this helps circumvent that process. The book will be sold on Capcom's official online stores, so you can order from your local/ nearest site. The announcement post can be seen below. - Cover Art for Agatha All Along Artbook Revealed (Updated)
Update 06/02/2025; Marvel have released the full cover of both the slipcase and cover art of Marvel Television's Agatha All Along: The Art of The Series ! You can find them below, or find them on the Marvel website here. The slipcase art was done by Senior Illustrator at Marvel Studios, Jana Schirmer. The book cover looks like an edited set photo of a physical set. This was featured heavily on the show for 'The Witches Road'. Original story below. February 4th 2025 Ahead of its release on April 29th, Marvel Television's Agatha: The Art of The Series now has official slipcase cover art. The art can be seen below, taking place of the simple placeholder image of just the logo that has been used by retailers. It is currently unclear which of the many talented Marvel artists this was done by, as there is no signature on the artwork. The featured image will be the art on the front of the slipcase, with the back and book cover yet to be revealed. This is the second artbook to release with a slipcase and lithographs, after Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine: The Art of the Movie released last October. You can find my review of that book here , which notes that while the content was great, it comes with a price point I don't feel is justified. That retail price of $100/ £90 continues with this release, so be prepared to pay a high amount for the book. - The Art of Assassin's Creed Shadows Leaked Ahead of Release
February 5th 2025 While not currently due until March 25th, The Art of Assassin's Creed Shadows was leaked online last week. The leak was posted on Reddit in the r/GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit. The strangest part of this though, was the source... a hentai website. While it is not uncommon for things to leak on adult sites, such as movies and shows, this is a little more unusual. Action has seemingly been taken, presumably by Ubisoft and/ or Dark Horse, with all links having since been removed. Given the book was originally due to be published in November by Dark Horse, along with the release of the game, there is no reason to believe this was not real. Ubisoft have been sat on this artbook for sometime, delaying it to February and then March, just as the game was pushed too, so the book has likely been finished for a good amount of time. The Assassin's Creed franchise has a long history of artbooks, with more than 10 full-size releases, as well a mini-artbooks released alongside collector's editions of the games. At this point, they are expected with every mainline game, the last being The Art of Assassin's Creed Mirage . The new book will be joining the collection and featured here when released, with a review and previews.
