  • Upcoming Artbooks: January 2026

January 1st 2026 After leaving 2025 and it's impressive library of artbook releases behind, we move into 2026 with high hopes for another strong publishing schedule. December ended last year on a high, delivering fantastic titles, with Kickstarter books arriving too as a cherry on top. In January things slow down though, as sadly the new year has already begun with heavy delays, turning what was once a month of seven releases, into a month of just two. Hopefully this isn't a sign that things will repeat themselves, as early 2025 was light on releases as setbacks pushed many of them into the backend of the year. Video game fans have a couple to look forward to this month as you will see here. 6th - The Art and Making of Sid Meier's Civilization VII Insight Editions is providing the first release of the year with a look at the massively popular strategy game Civilization VII that was released in February 2025. The Art and Making of Sid Meier's Civilization VII will not only provide insights into the making of the latest entry in the series, but interviews with the developer will reflect on the franchise as a whole. Alongside this will be concept art, historical research, and photography that the Firaxis Games team put together when creating the game across the book's 256 pages. The foreword is provided by the series creator himself, Sid Meier. This will no doubt be exciting for long time players of the series and the many newer fans that are younger than series itself, which is now almost almost 35 years old. If interested in the book, you can order a copy here; Buy Here   / Buy Here (UK) 27th - The Art of Rust After a troubled release schedule consisting of 6 delays, The Art of Rust from publisher Dark Horse and developer Facepunch Studios is ready to hit shelves and give fans a look at the concept art that helped build its world. Coming as a 192-page hardcover, the book will feature art for the equipment, armour, weapons, environments, vehicles, wildlife, assets, and more, for the game. Rust was released in early access in 2013, with a full release in 2018, so there is a lot for the team to show to those that have been enjoying playing the game. Given that this is a heavy crafting title, expect to see a lot of assets included that allow players to build the fortifications and tools needed to survive the island and, of course, other players! You can order a copy of The Art of Rust to your own shelf below. A copy is also joining the collection here too for review. Buy Here   / Buy Here (UK) Updates for these books will be reported as they happen, with more future artbook releases found on the Upcoming page ! These books were also featured in my Artbook News Roundup video for December 2025, which you can see below. • 'Andor' and 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' Artbooks Delayed

December 30th 2025 Abrams Books have unfortunately been pushing back their long-awaited Star Wars artbooks to later in 2026, giving patient fans a little longer to wait. All three books scheduled for release in the year have suffered, including a look at Andor and the Clan of Two. After spotting the delay of the the artbook for Star Wars: The Acolyte , the other two upcoming releases for live-action projects have also been found to have suffered setbacks too. The Art of Star Wars: Andor and The Art of Star Wars: the Mandalorian and Grogu are now coming later than expected, as confirmed on retailer listings. First, The Art of Star Wars: Andor has been delayed from May 19th to June 30th, the second date change for the book after being slated for March when revealed. The 272-page hardcover book will showcase the concept art for both seasons of the hit show, as well as insights from author Phil Szostak. When the artbooks stopped for the Star Wars series after The Mandalorian Season 2, people were sad that Andor was skipped, but by including both seasons, it now fills that gap. The Art of the Mandalorian and Grogu will not only feature concept art for the movie, but it is also plugging previous artbook gaps by including The Mandalorian Season 3 and The Book of Bobba Fett . This site had the book as coming in April, as confirmed on social media by Phil Szostak, however, other sources updated its release to September. Now though, the book has been pushed back again and is now expected November 3rd 2026, more than 6 months after the movie's premier. The reasons for the delays are unknown and done in silence. Unfortunately in the artbook world, there is a lot of noise when announcing a book, but delays go unnoticed unless you manually check, or get an email notification from retailers for a pre-order. Many delays happen shortly after being announced too, despite being revealed a long time in advance of a release, and while there are lots of reasons for setbacks, nothing has been done to minimise them or change how and when books are announced. Hopefully, for all three of the upcoming artbooks from Abrams it will be the last setbacks, as it has now been 4 years since we have had an artbook for the live-action projects. There is also still no news on books for Ashoka , Obi-Wan Kenobi , or Skeleton Crew either, but hopefully they will be coming in the future too. Future updates for the books will be shared here and you can order copies of the books below; The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte But Here  / Buy Here (UK) The Art of Star Wars: Andor Buy Here  / Buy Here (UK) The Art of the Mandalorian and Grogu Buy Here TBC / Buy Here (UK) Tags; #TheAcolyte #StarWars #AbramsBooks #Lucasfilm #Disney

  • 'The Art of Star Trek: Lower Decks' Now Coming in May 2026

December 29th 2025 The upcoming book from IDW Publishing that takes a look at the artwork behind Star Trek: Lower Decks has suffered a delay, moving the release date for the book out of January and into May. The Art of Star Trek: Lower Decks will give fans a peak at the work of the artists across the 5 seasons of the animated show, perfect for fans wanting more following its ending. After the most recent delay, the 192-page hardcover is now set for release May 5th 2026, as confirmed on the websites of retailers. The book has hit by delays before, but are hard to track due to the nature in which they are handled—silently. Admittedly, a previous delay was missed on the site, and only in noticing this new date, did I discover there had been another before. Hopefully though, this is the last delay it will be hit with. When it does arrive though, The Art of Star Trek: Lower Decks features sketches, designs, full-colour images, and more for the hit show, showcased alongside interviews with the creators. It will cover all aspects of the show, including the characters, the Cerritos, locations, and individual episodes. Check out some previews of the book below. Star Trek: Lower Decks  is an adult animated comedy set in the 24th century, focusing on the support crew of the USS Cerritos, a Starfleet vessel that doesn't get the high-priority missions that others are tasked with. It focuses on the lives of Beckett Mariner, Brad Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford, crew members that deal with everyday tasks, awkward social dynamics, and unexpected moments aboard the ship. This corner of the Star Trek universe delivers humour and franchise lore, packed in a colourful and fun animation style, that made it a hit with fans. • 'Elden Ring: Official Art Book Volume III' Has Been Delayed to March 2026

December 29th 2025 The upcoming English translation of the artbook for Elden Ring's DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree , has been delayed. Elden Ring: Official Art Book Volume III from Udon Entertainment will be arriving later than expected after a new release date for the book appeared online. The first delay moved the book's release January 2026, but this second delay has pushed it again by another 2 months, giving it a new date of March 3rd 2026. The 320-page hardcover will include all of the content of the Japanese original that hit shelves in December of 2024. The delay was spotted online and confirmed on multiple retailer websites, including Amazon US and Barnes and Noble, both of which have been reliable sources in the past and make the story safe to report. Amazon UK has a date in February, but is much more unreliable with dates than the American counterpart. The Udon website itself gives no specific date, only early Q1 of 2026, which this no longer is. It also notes the original November date on the same page too, leaving fans to rely on retailers to get the most up to date information. Delays are common for artbooks, but sadly rarely publicly acknowledged or explained. As this was only just spotted while working on a video, I cannot give specifics on when the delay happened. It can be hard to do this as different websites get updated at different times, with those even varying from the same company in different countries, as seen with Amazon. Like the The Art of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty that has just also been delayed by the publisher, this is an English translated edition of the original book published in Japan by Kadokawa. However, not only will this translate the text (although there is very little in previous volumes), but it will come as a hardcover, a better option than a paperback. A couple of page previews can be seen below. Elden Ring: Official Art Book Volume III features art for FromSoftware's hugely popular RPG, this time diving into the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. The new version is coming out more than a year after the original, which is not unusual with these releases from Udon Entertainment. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree  launched in 2024 and became critically acclaimed along with the base game. It introduced the new region of the Land of Shadow and the demigod antagonist, Miquella. It has a large map to explore, with more enemies and boss fights that continue its brutal difficulty. Shadow of the Erdtree is now one of the highest-selling DLC of all time, so there will be many players with their eyes on this book. If there are any more updates on the book they will be reported here and a copy will be reviewed when it arrives March 3rd. • The Artbook Collector 2025 Awards

January 5th 2025 It's the end of another year, so it's time for the completely unofficial, The Artbook Collector Official Awards of 2025! 44 books released over the last year were added to the collection and now that the last one has arrived, I can give out some awards. This is a fun look back and not to be taken too seriously, as these awards are decided by just myself and based on the on the books I now own and have reviewed. The categories will also change based on what was released too, to highlight some notable books. It has been a great year though, making some of these awards very hard to pick winners for! Best Book Cover For the second year in a row, this award has to go to Bryce Kho, for not one, but two book covers! Kho created custom art for his new books, both coming with gold foiling for some extra flare. The covers for Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho and Overflow: The Art of Bryce Kho can be seen below, highlighting his incredible artwork, with each book also giving breakdowns of their creation too! The releases from 3dtotal Publishing are well worth adding to your collection. Best Book Production Quality This award goes to Creating Worlds: The Disney and 20th Century Studios Cinematic Art of Dylan Cole ! 2025 delivered a noticeable improvement in binding and print quality for multiple releases, and not just from one publisher either. It lead to many books avoiding image loss in the centre fold, which can really ruin an artbook. The standout though was Creating Worlds from Insight Editions (Titan Books in the UK), a book that showcases the stunning art of Dylan Cole for a collection of movies, including Avatar and Maleficent. It's a large book with 296 pages, but the binding included a lot of page signatures and and enough flexibility to fully showcase the art that takes up the full spread. As well as this, the print finish is exceptional, with true blacks and clear details in even the smallest elements of an image, possibly the best I've seen in an artbook. Read my full review of Creating Worlds here - Book Review . Best Look at Unused Concepts This award goes to Marvel for their Marvel Studios artbooks! There were a lot of books that were generous with sharing unused designs, but Marvel have been consistent at showing them with multiple releases in 2025, with some being very notable. While the books haven't quite hit the heights of former years, there have been some interesting pages of character concepts that never made it to the screen. Below and in photo order are the following examples; The Leader horror concepts from Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World - The Art of the Movie The 'Golden Surfer' from Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps - The Art of the Movie Loki 'God of Stories' costumes from Marvel Studios' Loki: Season Two - The Art of the Series She-Hulk character concepts from Marvel Studios' She-Hulk: Attorney At Law - The Art of the Series Best Use of Space In another competitive category, the award goes to Starfield Visual Compendium from Dark Horse! The partnership with Bethesda delivered a huge 368-page hardcover book, but it still packed a lot of art in on every page. There are many different approaches to page design, but the goal here was clearly to share as much of the early sketches and full-colour concepts as possible, so empty page space became the enemy. As you can see below in the photos and video preview, there is a wealth of artwork, but they are still very readable and the print quality helps maintain image clarity throughout. It can often make a book look messy including so many images, buy the design team did a fantastic job here and the book offers a huge amount to pore over for Starfield as a result. Read my full review of Starfield Visual Compendium here - Book Review . Buy Here   / Buy Here (UK) Best Crediting of Artists This award goes to The Art of DOOM: The Dark Ages from Dark Horse and id Software! Crediting is very hit and miss in the artbook world, and while this book was lighter on text with its art-heavy focus, it still made sure you knew exactly who created what on the page. They also listed the artists in the back of the book in a clear way too, you can't ask for much more than that! Read my full review of this incredible book here . Buy Here (US)   / Buy Here (UK) Give Me More The 'Give Me More' award goes to God of War: 20th Anniversary Retrospective from Dark Horse! This was I book I ordered as fan of the series and wasn't expecting it to feature so much art, as its description gave no indication of how much would be included in the two-volume set. In fact, it's not really advertised as an artbook at all. However, there is a huge amount here alongside the history of God of War's development, making it perfect for lovers of the series and concept art. Splitting the Greek and Norse Saga was a thoughtful approach that I also really appreciated. The 'Retrospective' is something that I hope Dark Horse does again for other games, whether it be Killzone and Ratchet & Clank from PlayStation as well, or titles from other publishers and developers too. Read the review of God of War: 20th Anniversary Retrospective with more previews here - Book Review . Buy Here   / Buy Here (UK) Worth the Wait The winner of this award is Metroid Prime 1-3: A Visual Retrospective from publisher Piggyback! 23 years after the release of the original Metroid Prime in 2002, this book features the concept art behind the trilogy and 2023's Metroid Prime Remastered . Across its 208 pages, the book includes early sketches, full-colour concepts, 3D models, and more, made with different art techniques and styles to create a wonderful collection of artwork for fans. Producer Kensuke Tanabe delivers the insights inside, with very honest thoughts and memories of the series while working with Retro Studios. The book is a welcome addition to the shelves of players, but if you need more convincing, read my review here . Buy Here   / Buy Here (UK) Best Animation Artbook Titan Books and Skydance Animation take this award with WondLa: The Art & Making of the Limited Series ! Stepping up to take on the usual suspects for animation artbooks, this release clearly takes inspiration from them while holding its own. It's a great showcase of the undeniable talent of the art team involved in adapting the WondLa books, but with many members of the team having an impressive resume in animation and movies, it's hardly a surprise. From early ideas to developed designs, as well as insights on the shows creation, this look behind the scenes is more than worthy of the award. Read my review of the book - Book Review . Buy Here   / Buy Here (UK) Best Art Showcase This award is for the book that best showcases the work of an individual, so it had to go to Creating Worlds: The Disney and 20th Century Studios Cinematic Art of Dylan Cole ! Dylan Cole's goal for the book was to show his art as it was originally created and allow it space to breathe, and he executed that brilliantly. The page design is simple, drawing all attention to the images, and so it very much feels like walking through an art gallery. In combination with the high quality of the print finish and binding, this is a superb look at the artist's work. Buy Here / Buy Here (UK) Best Deep Dive The winner for this award goes to Outer Wilds: Design Works from Lost in Cult! A number of books joined the collection in 2025 that feature deep dives into the development of projects, but this look at Mobius Digital's sci-fi hit Outer Wilds was the standout this year. It perfectly balanced the written history, insights, and development of the game alongside the wonderful concept art, leaving you wanting to jump right back into the game. Engaging from start to finish through the excellent writing and interviews, fans will learn a lot about the game and the team behind its creation, all contained within this well-designed book. Read the review of the book to learn more and see more previews - Book Review . Buy Here Most Anticipated A late book listing takes this one, as The Art of Avatar: Fire and Ash from DK is my most anticipated artbook for 2026! Although its existence is not a surprise, you can't help but be excited to see listings appear online. Noted as coming on July 2nd, this book will highlight the concept art behind the most visually impressive release in cinemas this year, including a look at the new locations, characters, and cultures of Pandora. If the previous book, The Art of Avatar: The Way of Water , is anything to go by, this will be well worth adding to your collection. Best Publisher Taking it for the second year running is publisher Dark Horse! If you play video games and enjoy concept art, Dark Horse will no doubt make their way onto your shelf. They have become the go to for some of the biggest developers in the gaming industry, but also work on releases for animation and comic books too, so a new release is always around the corner. Their greatest strength is their consistency, delivering large hardcovers with great paper and print quality, as well as implementing continual improvements too, such as the reducing image loss in the centre fold. 12 Dark Horse books joined the collection in 2025, and that's not all of their releases! Many are some of my favourites of the year too, including The Art of Assassin's Creed Shadows , God of War: 20th Anniversary Retrospective , The Art of DOOM: The Dark Ages , and Starfield Visual Compendium . Check out the slider below of some their releases from the last 12 months. Artbook of the Year The final award, the one that everyone wants to see, but is the hardest to choose. This year it goes to The Art of Star Wars Outlaws from Dark Horse and Massive Entertainment! It was an incredible 12 months of releases and a handful were more than worthy of the award, but I kept coming back to this one and so it felt right to make it official. Like other books, the production quality, page design, insights, and of course, the artwork, are brilliant. On top of this though, this book had a lot to live up to, because not only does Star Wars have an insane amount of glorious concept art from some of the best in the industry, but it also has a rich history of exceptional artbooks too. Fortunately though, the artists delivered stunning artwork and the book does a great job at presenting it to fans. It ticks a lot of boxes for me; a well-made book, early 'blue sky' concepts and sketches to epic full colour pieces, a look at multiple aspects of the game, interesting insights, great page design and use of space, and incredible artwork. I was happy that The Art of Star Wars Outlaws  continues the legacy of the extraordinary Star Wars artbook catalogue, making this look at the adventure of Kay Vess and Nix highly recommended! Read the review of The Art of Star Wars Outlaws here - Book Review . Buy Here  / Buy Here (UK) Honourable Mentions It's only right to mention the books that were also considered for Artbook of the Year! Creating Worlds: The Disney and 20th Century Studios Cinematic Art of Dylan Cole - The undeniable talent of Cole got the showcase it deserves in this release, making it recommended for not just his fans, but those that love movie art in general. The Art of Assassin's Creed Shadows - The series from Ubisoft has always delivered great artbooks, with this one being on of the strongest in the line-up. The environment art is outstanding yet again and depicts moments, rather than static scenes. Like the Star Wars Outlaws book, it ticks many boxes for an 'Art of' release and perfect for fans wanting more from the game. Starfield Visual Compendium - If you love sci-fi design and want a lot of it, this is the book for you. I was impressed by the sheer amount of art included, which was matched by the book making it very presentable throughout. The art team at Bethesda are fantastic too, making it a book you'll keep coming back to and is ideal for artists looking for a volume of reference material. That's the awards for 2025! Let me know what you think and be sure to check out the YouTube channel here to see previews of many of the books mentioned here, as well as over 30 more releases from the year! • 'The Art of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty' Delayed Again to April 2026

December 29th 2025 In another delay from publisher Udon Entertainment, The Art of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty has missed its January release date, leaving players outside of Japan waiting longer to get their hands on the book. Originally set for release in June 2024, the 192-page hardcover was pushed back a couple of times and given a new January publication date. However, this has been changed again, only noticed when checking retailer listings online, who now show a release date of April 14th 2026. The reason that artbooks can be hard to track and easily missed is because delays are rarely announced publicly, so without a statement from Udon, its hard to say when this happened. For full transparency, manual checks happen fairly often, but different retailers update listings at different times, so it can be very difficult to catch them as they happen, as you will see today on this site with multiple delays reported. The new date for The Art of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty was confirmed Amazon US and Barnes and Noble , who were both used to confirm the last delay too. Yet again in the UK, retailers are still showing the old date, with the UK Amazon showing the book as unavailable since it missed its November 2024 release. Expect websites to eventually catch up with the latest update and emails to be received soon if you have pre-ordered the book. The upcoming artbook will showcase the concept art and character profiles for the dark-fantasy RPG, perfect for those wanting to see how the art team crafted its world. Inside is a look at the characters, world, enemies, weapons, and more for the game. This new version will not only be readable for more players, but also comes as a hardcover, which is much better for preservation. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty was developed by Team NINJA and released on March 3rd 2023, winning fans over with its 'Soulslike' gameplay and parry-based combat. It is set in 184CE, during the collapse of the Han Dynasty, but adds a demonic fantasy twist on top of its historical setting. In 2023 the game had sold over 1 million units and has since passed more than 5 million players. Future updates will be reported here and the book is still expected to join the collection when it arrives on April 14th for review. The Art & Lore of Dead by Daylight is coming by way of publisher Titan Books, who have partnered with the developer Behaviour Interactive, to highlight the concept art and development insights that helped create the hugely successful online game. Set for release in June 2nd 2026, the hardcover book comes with 192 pages of art, details, and interviews for those wanting more after surviving the night. The book was revealed by the publisher on social media and is already available to pre-order through online retailers too. Paul Davies is the author and no stranger to artbooks, having penned multiple titles in the past, including releases for Assassin's Creed and various Marvel projects. Dead by Daylight  is an asymmetrical multiplayer horror from Behaviour Interactive, giving one player the role of the Killer, who must hunt down four others playing as Survivors. Players must avoid the Killer and survive the night by escaping, or become victims and get sacrificed to the Entity. The maps are procedurally generated and players must use hide-and-seek tactics to navigate its environment and win the game. Since its launch in 2016, Dead by Daylight  continues to be hugely popular, with large numbers of concurrent players in 2025 and has hosted tens of millions of players over its lifespan. It also has a large roster of Killers and Survivors, including many horror icons from movies and video games, as well as many skins and DLC. The ongoing success of the game will no doubt have many people interested in this release, whether they were playing since day one, or are newer to the terrifying game of cat-and mouse. Titan Books have an ever-increasing catalogue of video game artbooks, so players can expect a high quality release when the book arrives next year. The Art & Lore of Dead by Daylight will be joining the collection when it arrives on June 2nd, so it will be reviewed here when it arrives and any updates will also be shared here. December 26th 2025 The holidays are here, but the books keep coming! A new preview is on The Artbook Collector YouTube channel, with a new release taking a look at the art behind The Outer Worlds 2 . The Art of The Outer Worlds 2 was released December 16th from Dark Horse, coming with 208-pages of artwork and insights for the sci-fi RPG from developer Obsidian Entertainment. It comes shortly after the release of the game, which is less common now, so it makes for great timing for those that are not done with the Arcadia star system and want some more from its world. The book features concept art for the characters, weapons, environments, enemies, and graphic design, covering all aspects of the game's world for players to enjoy. Those that like costume design will find a lot to pore over here, with the book showcasing the retro-futuristic style across the various factions. The environments show off some of the games locations too, including earlier artwork of designs that were never used. I reviewed the book and found that some chapters, especially Environments, were great, but others lacked the variety seen in other releases and that made the book feel safe and sterile. For more thoughts on the what's included, as well as the physical books itself, you can read my review here - Book Review . The Outer Worlds 2  is the sequel to Obsidian Entertainment’s satirical sci-fi RPG, continuing its humour and action in a new star system. Sent to investigate space-time rifts, the player also ends up dealing with competing factions, propaganda, and corrupt leaders, all while the game builds on the gameplay of the original. It features improved role-playing systems, storytelling, combat, and player choices, much to the praise of fans. The sharp writing made a welcomed return and visual design gets to shine on the latest hardware, making it perfect for the artbook treatment. • Flip Through - Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho

December 23rd 2025 A new release has joined The Artbook Collector YouTube channel with a preview of the artwork behind the DLC of the hit role-playing game Sea of Stars ! Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho is a 68-page hardcover release from 3dtotal Publishing, in partnership with artist Bryce Kho and developer Sabotage Studio, to give players a look at the new characters and more for the game. It was released on December 16th 2025 and highlights the talent of Kho in the second artbook for Sea of Stars . This new volume follows the release for the base game, Sea of Stars: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho , and continues its design approach of showing the progression of the concepts, alongside text conversations with game director Thierry Boulanger. This is a unique approach and is a great look behind the scenes at how the characters and enemies were created. The book also features a look at t-shirt deigns, key art, and the custom book covers for both releases. In my review of the book, I praised this approach, as well as the fantastic production quality of the book, the choices of what to include, and of course, the superb talent of Bryce Kho. You can read that here - Book Review . Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker  is a free expansion for the turn-based RPG and was released in May 2025. It's a new post-game story that takes protagonists Zale and Valere into a new clockwork world called Horloge, bringing more challenges to take on. This includes new areas, puzzles, enemies, bosses, and playable classes. Artificer Arty is also introduced as a new party member too, perfect for the co-op support that allows 3 people to play together. Like the base game, the DLC was met with positive reviews from fans for continuing the charm and fun gameplay that won them over before. • Book Review - The Art of The Outer Worlds 2

December 22nd 2025 Obsidian Entertainment made their anticipated return in 2025 with The Outer Worlds 2 , inviting fans back to its corporate run, retro-futuristic, and hazardous sci-fi universe. Players were excited for the game and those that enjoy concept art were in luck too, as an artbook was also announced. Partnering with Dark Horse, The Art of The Outer Worlds 2 is now here to allow players to see some of the art behind the latest game from the studio! Arriving on December 23rd 2025, the artbook arrived less than 2 months after the game, giving players just a short wait to get more from the Arcadia star system. Below is my review of The Art of The Outer Worlds 2 , as well as photos of some pages too. Build Quality This is a Dark Horse artbook, so I knew what to expect the day the book was announced and was not disappointed. Consistency is one of their greatest strengths and that’s ideal when the quality is always very good. It comes in the usual 23.5cm x 21cm hardcover format, this time with 208 pages to pore over. The binding is again very good, feeling secure and having enough flexibility to allow the pages to lay flat with ease. A great showing as always from a production standpoint. Content The Art of The Outer Wilds 2 takes the standard approach to its chapters by dividing the game up into its major elements. This book creates chapters for the following; Factions, Characters, Weapons, Environments, Creatures and Automechanicals, and Propaganda. It’s simple and effective, ideal for those that want to see a particular part of the game’s design. Factions is the most text-heavy part, giving in-game lore for each of the groups, from mega-conglomerate Auntie’s Choice, to the smuggler faction Sub Rosa. After this, the art becomes much more of the main focus, with mixed results for me personally. The Character chapter was an interesting one, because it should really have been called ‘Costumes’, because there isn’t too much in the way the characters themselves are designed, as opposed to what they wear. I really like the costume design of The Outer Worlds 2 , especially for the Order of the Ascendant faction, but even for specific characters you don’t get much beyond this. These are presented in poses that aren’t especially interesting or dynamic, which is great for artists to convey details to those that work on the game, but it doesn’t make for a fun presentation in an artbook. If you are hoping to see different character shapes, poses, and early unused designs, you will be left wanting. 60 pages of just simple poses did leave me wondering where the keyframes and animation exploration were, because you don’t feel any personality from what you see. Again, that’s not the purpose of the art presented, but I don’t doubt they left out concepts that do show that side of the characters. The costume design is fantastic, but this curation feels very sterile. This sadly is repeated for the creatures in the book, of which there aren’t many, because they are shown in flat side profiles or the same 45-degree angle pose. I love creature design and it’s often a highlight, but without a dynamic pose that tells you something about them, it’s not as engaging for an artbook. Like the human concepts, there are no variations in the sizes and shapes either, just variants of one design. I find it unlikely they were happy with the first body type they drew, so I would have liked to have seen the unused versions included. Weapons are the usual affair of variants, but I really like how the retro-futuristic design comes in to play heavily here and it looks great. I appreciate that they also included the view of the guns from the game’s first-person perspective too. The Environments chapter is by far the strongest, with superb use of colour throughout, alongside a look at plants, buildings, rift events, and more. The great print quality of the book helps the colours pop off the page, giving it all a great showcase. It captures the feel of these places and the inclusion of exploration for specific elements of these places helps makes the chapter more dynamic. It even includes unused ideas too, such as mining machinery. Having fully painted backgrounds, as opposed to only standalone designs seen in other chapters, gives it much more life as well. It also features a look at the players ship, with more unused designs included. It’s by far my favourite part of the book. If you like graphic design, the Propaganda section will be a highlight for you as well, with some excellent art nouveau poster designs throughout. Again, the colours here are used well to coincide with different factions. For some games, this is an afterthought, but the use of art like this in The Outer Worlds 2 is much more important, and it gets to shine here. Text in the book leans more on giving in-universe lore and backgrounds on the characters, factions, and places of the game. However, there are some notes on the art itself that gives details on design approach, why something wasn’t used, influences, and more. It’s well written and doesn’t overstay its welcome either, so you will be happy to read it all if you enjoyed the game. Overall, the artwork inside is very strong, but the choice of what to include does make much of the book less appealing than it could otherwise be. Some artists may appreciate this more than players who are hoping to see early and unused designs, as well as concepts for moments of the story or gameplay exploration, as seen in other artbooks. I used the word sterile before, and I feel that is most accurate, along with safe. Credits Unfortunately, the book doesn’t include the credits of artists on each page, so you don’t get to find out who did what in the book. They haven’t been left out though, because they get their own page in the back of the book, which includes Goodname, an outsourcing art company. Not the ideal way to do it, but at least they are included. Use of Space As you can see in the previews, pages are filled up nicely in clean and simple layouts. The page design was kept very straightforward here, using some beige background boxes and rounded edged frames to separate elements on the pages throughout. I personally like simple as it works and doesn’t take away from the art. The most interesting part is for some of the character title pages, that although use the same pose as seen in the concept art, utilize art nouveau backgrounds to add some flair. The binding prevents image loss in the centre fold too, something I’ve been impressed by from Dark Horse this year. Value The book has an RRP of $54.99/ £49.99, the new pricing for Dark Horse in 2025. It is on the higher end of the pricing range for artbooks, but the production quality is always very good from the publisher. It is probably too high for the UK though, as this works out to be over $67, so it should probably be £40-45, as seen with other books on the market that have accounted for the more recent exchange rates. Checking Amazon again for consistency, just before the book’s release, it is discounted in the UK at 28% off and under £40. This is often the case with new releases, perhaps an indication they are aware of the exchange rate issue, one I wasn’t aware of myself until recently. Discounts come and go though, with nothing showing in the US yet, but it’s worth keeping an eye out. The American price as it stands isn’t one that will offend fans that jump in now though. Verdict The Art of The Outer Worlds 2 has its moments, including incredible environment art. However, in a year of many strong releases, you can’t help but notice how safe and generic much of the book is. The character and creature chapters lack the game’s personality, and although this could be all that was created by the team, those that are fans or own other artbooks may feel it is lacking the early and more dramatic artwork they were hoping for. The talent of the artists is not in question, but as a volume of artwork, it is not as compelling as other releases.   Die-hard fans, those that love sci-fi environments, and artists looking for some retro-futuristic references may find some value here, but outside of this, I would struggle to recommend this book. • Book Review - Overflow: The Art of Bryce Kho

December 21st 2025 Concept artist and illustrator Bryce Kho is back with another artbook, following a release for his work on the video game Sea of Stars last year. This time though, he gets to share his personal artwork and details about his life and career in Overflow: The Art of Bryce Kho ! Released on December 16th after being successfully funded on Kickstarter, Overflow sees Kho partner again with publisher 3dtotal, delivering a showcase for older fans and those, like myself, that discovered his talent though his work with Sabotage Studios. Excited to see more from the artist after delivering one of my favourite books of 2024 in Sea of Stars: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho , a copy of Overflow has joined the collection and I can now share my thoughts on the book! Build Quality Overflow comes as a 23.5cm x 31cm hardcover book and has 218 pages inside. It is will made, with a strong cover, thick quality paper, and binding that allows the page to fully open and lay flat. 3dtotal do a great job on the production of their books, so there was little surprise here that this is also very good. The standout element is the custom cover art with gold foil stamping that Kho created. It catches the eye and is perfect for letting those unfamiliar with his name see his fantastic art, which will no doubt have people wanting to check out what’s inside. Content Inside you’ll find an impressive display of Kho’s art, as well as details about his life and approach to creating his images. It acts as both a biography and peak at his process, making it appealing to fans and artists. It features traditional and digital techniques throughout, though most is done with paint, as his go to is watercolours. Studies take up the bulk of the book and are split into anatomy, costumes, characters, and ‘Gallery’. The first 3 are self-explanatory, highlighting art that focuses on each one in a variety of styles that still carries Kho’s recognisable touch. I particularly like the pieces made of block colour myself, though it all looks fantastic and the characters designs are incredible as always. Something that carries over from his illustrations and concept art, even in the studies, is the use of a variety of colours, making the art more interesting, but without being outlandish. This is aided by the high print quality of the book too, making the images pop off the page. What is interesting is that these 3 chapters are for dividing the art, but not the text, as this dives into the early life and career of Kho. It covers a lot, including his art as a child and his influences, through to university and creating the game Aegis Defenders , to his position today supporting himself through art and working with Sabotage Studio. I quite like this as it allows him to write freely, without being constrained by the chapters. However, while he does also discuss creating art within this, having some separate notes or descriptions for what’s on the page would have been nice to see too. The ‘Gallery’ chapter is one I really liked as it explored ideas for stories and concepts that Kho created art for, such as a magical-sports anime called 'Summoners Club', highlighting another side of his imagination. It is also here where you see much more of his maximalism art style, with lots of details and elements to look at in each piece. Beyond his expert use of colours, I like busy images and his composition makes them fun, without being messy, so I loved seeing these inclusions. The last chapters are tutorials, split into painted pieces and digital art. It explores his process from the initial idea coming from a description or purpose, to thumbnails, and then the final result. It’s interesting to see his stages and will be no doubt useful to aspiring artists, or even those that are interested in a new approach. The digital tutorial being included was great too, as it’s not the same as painting and gives a look at the creation of the superb book cover, allowing you to see it come to life as he works his way through each step. Overall, there is an engaging mix of artwork and insights throughout that hits on three fronts; learning more about Bryce Kho, getting some insights into creating the art, and being an impressive collection of his work. As a fan, I enjoyed seeing more from of what I like from Kho, but also other curations like the studies, all adding to my appreciation of the artist. Credits This is a part of all of my reviews, but there is only one artist featured and his name is on the front cover! Use of Space As you can see in the previews, Overflow does well to use up the page space without being cluttered. The placement of text gives room for the art to be the focus and the layouts change throughout. There is nothing fancy here, but it doesn’t need it, it all works very well and you can’t ask for much more than that. Images that cross the centre fold avoid image loss as well due to the binding, so I’m very impressed with this as well. Value The book has an RRP of £30/$50, which for those in the UK is a very reasonable price as it is lower than most. In the US it is still not bad though, within the normal price range for an artbook in 2025. For the size and production quality of the book, fans and collectors won’t be disappointed. Checking Amazon as always for consistency, on the week of its release, Overflow can be bought for $39.39 in the US and £24.93 in the UK. Both of these price drops are excellent and improve upon the existing value found in the RRP. These will come and go of course, but highlights the pricing that can be found. The book is also in the multi-buy deal on the 3dtotal website too, which offers great value. Taking into account that 50% of all profits at the publisher are donated to charity on top of this, you can’t go wrong here with what you pay. Verdict Overflow: The Art of Bryce Kho is a spectacular showcase of the talent of the artist in a well-made and designed artbook. Whether you want to know more about the man himself, or are looking to add more of his work to your collection, you won’t be disappointed with what you find inside. Though there are different techniques and styles throughout, it still has Kho’s fingerprints all over it, making it perfect those that admire what he creates. After enjoying his last artbook with 3dtotal last year, this became a must buy for me and I’m happy to say I was not disappointed! • 'The Art of Avatar: Fire and Ash' Coming Summer 2026

December 17th 2025 Listings have appeared online for a new artbook based on the third instalment of James Cameron's Avatar series, Fire and Ash , with the release currently slated for summer next year. Pointed out to me on the social media platform Bluesky, The Art of Avatar: Fire and Ash has been listed with a publication date of July 2nd 2026, just over 6 months after the movie's release. The eagle-eyed user had seen the book on the German Amazon store, and although hidden from the UK site, it can be found via its ISBN number or a direct link. No cover has been revealed yet, with a placeholder used as seen below, however, it does give some other details for the book. The artbook is again coming from DK, who published The Art of Avatar: The Way of Water for the previous movie, and will feature 272 pages of concept art and insights for Fire and Ash . It also comes with a description as follows; "Explore the magnificent behind-the-scenes artwork underpinning James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash. Discover how crucial scenes were conceived and marvel at the incredible attention to detail that the Avatar artists brought to the development of new characters like Varang, leader of the fearsome Ash People, and aerial creatures like the medusoid and windray. Hundreds of spectacular images convey all the power, beauty, and intricate detail with which the Avatar film franchise has enthralled millions all over the world. Written in full collaboration with James Cameron’s production company Lightstorm, Art of Avatar: Fire and Ash provides a unique window into a visionary movie universe. With a foreword by Oona Chaplin." Above art by Dylan Cole for Avatar: Fire and Ash As mentioned, the book isn't widely listed and may be awaiting an official announcement. This wouldn't be the first time a book has been listed online ahead of an announcement, nor is it the first time the Amazon UK has a book hidden from its search results either, so I'm expecting more from official sources in the near future. The concept art behind the previous movies is exceptional and what has been released for the new movie also looks incredible, including the example seen above from production designer Dylan Cole. No doubt more will be found in the upcoming release, including ideas that didn't make it to the screen and creative insights. This will no doubt make for an exciting release for those that aren't done with the Sully family and Pandora. Future updates for The Art of Avatar: Fire and Ash  will be shared here, as well as any other artbooks for the Avatar series. If you want more now though, you can check out the new release, Creating Worlds: The Disney and 20th Century Studios Cinematic Art of Dylan Cole , which includes artwork for Avatar and The Way of Water , as well as other movies from Cole's career. December 17th 2025 Clover Press have announced that another entry in their 'Marvel Art of' series is headed to Kickstarter soon, this time with an exciting look at the work of award-winning artist Dan dos Santos. The Marvel Art of Dan dos Santos will be the 9th book in the series and joins the others in being funded through Kickstarter. It was first revealed by website SuperHeroHype and while the campaign has not yet gone live, you can sign up to be notified for when it does here - Kickstarter page . The book can also be backed through BackerKit as well. The series is made to highlight some of the greats and their work at Marvel, making Dan dos Santos a great fit to get his own book alongside the previously featured talents. His art for the comics, as well as for Marvel Masterpieces, showcases why he is an award winner, with his Captain America painting seen above for the book cover. He is a multidisciplined artist, though the majority of his work is done through oil painting, and his work has contributed to some of the biggest companies in entertainment, including Disney, Activision, and DC Comics. Like before, this new hardcover book will come with over 200 pages of artwork and will be 9"x12", making it a good size to shine the spotlight on his art. Expect extras to be available on the campaign too, such as variant covers, signed copies, a slipcase, art prints, and more, as seen for the previous releases. There will be a mix of characters found inside too, with Captain America, Daredevil, Kitty Pryde, and Wolverine all confirmed so far. This previous 'The Marvel Art of' books featured Mike Del Mundo, David Mack, Alex Maleev, David Nakayama, Russell Dauterman, Michael Turner, Michael Allred, and Tyler Kirkham. Each campaign was hugely successful, flying past their funding goals in a short period of time, so more from the series was inevitable. I interviewed Publisher Hank Kanalz from Clover Press earlier this year about The Marvel Art of Tyler Kirkham , where we touched on their decision to use Kickstarter and the benefits it brings, such as the add-on options, read that here - Hank Kanalz Interview . For an idea of what to expect, you can watch a preview of The Marvel Art of Alex Maleev on The Artbook Collector YouTube channel below. I was impressed with the premium feel of the book and the print quality too, making the series perfect for collectors of comic book art. Any future updates for The Marvel Art of Dan dos Santos will be reported on this website and be sure to sign up to get a notification for when the Kickstarter campaign goes live here , or on BackerLit here . For more from Dan dos Santos, both for Marvel and his own projects, you can visit his website and see why he deserves to get the artbook treatment from Clover Press. • Book Review - Mileships by Ian McQue

December 16th 2025 Narrative artbooks are a small but growing genre within the book world, delivering stories and ideas alongside artwork from talented artists to pull readers in. Mileships from Ian McQue is one of these titles that has now been making its way into the hands of backers after a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign last year. Created by concept artist and illustrator Ian McQue (Grand Theft Auto, Solo: A Star Wars Story), and co-written with author Jim Rossignol, Mileships is set in an alternate world where people work and live on floating ships and stones. After a decade of painting these ships, this book has been created to explore them further and a copy has joined the collection to become my first narrative artbook review! Build Quality The book comes as a 190-page hardcover measuring 30.5cm x 25.5cm and it's thick too. I wasn’t expecting it to be quite this big, but as they have used high quality thick paper, it does give it some heft. Fortunately, the binding is also very good, securely holding everything in place and allowing pages to open fully too. Overall, they have done a fantastic job with the physical book. Story For a conventional artbook, I would give right into the full content, but it makes sense to split it here for a narrative artbook, so I’ll begin with the storytelling, which comes with an interesting approach. The world of Mileships is presented through excerpts from in-world journals, compendiums, letters, books, and more, all building a picture of this unique world. There are characters and ships that are brought up multiple times throughout the book, with the journey of captain Huna Lintaig and his ship the Remora being the standout that is followed most closely. New elements and areas are visited by the captain, making the Remora somewhat of an anchor (pardon the pun) for the readers experience. The fleets, ships, floating stones, and the inhabitants of this universe are fully fleshed out through details delivered in handfuls of paragraphs at a time. By approaching it through personal accounts, historical texts, and more, it allows deeper details to be shared more efficiently, preventing it from becoming a heavy novel. It does mean that you have to go with the flow initially, as it just drops you in at the deep end, but it’s not long before you suddenly realise it has gripped you. It’s interesting in that it’s not laid out in acts like a story, but rather a collection of the highs, lows, and realities of these people’s lives. What I really like is that, without sticking to just one character, it does take you through the different social classes and places organically, from the marshfolk (people on the ground), to the workers, ship builders, and eventually those that live on the stones in the sky. You learn about their lives, their roles, the politics, and of course, the ships themselves. It’s a strange and yet familiar world presented in a non-conventional way and works well to deliver so much lore in a book like this. Art One of the things that attracted me to this book was Ian McQue’s artwork, and unsurprisingly it is exceptional throughout Mileships . His art of floating boats gets the full artbook treatment and creates a simultaneously grounded and surreal reality to get lost in. There are a lot of incredible full colour pieces of the mileships, stones, and people, each depicting the artist’s world, and all are complimented by the written history and stories too. As you can see in the previews, this may be sci-fi, but it’s certainly not alien and this helps you settle in to the world as there are recognisable elements from real-life places like boat yards, scrapyards, and farms.   It also features a lot of sketches too, an inclusion I really like as other narrative artbooks don’t include things like this. McQue’s concept art background is on full display as there are a large number of designs in the book by doing this, as opposed to only having select ships featured in illustrations. Most of these include no text at all, so become a showcase of ideas and elements, and designs for the gravity-defying reality. I love the style, it’s not photoreal as you can see with the people and some of the shapes, but it still looks familiar enough to feel tangible. You can imagine being on the ships and going to the places they visit. What always impresses me most is the sense of scale and depth in the artwork, made more extreme by the fact most of the book takes place in the air. The only drawback is that I want more of it! Overall, along with the narrative elements, this a hugely effective way to get immersed in a new reality, as well as collecting wonderful art. It has left me wanting more because it’s such an interesting place, it’s easy to imagine that there are individual stories to tell after my tour of the sky. Credits Short and sweet, Ian McQue has his name on the cover and Jim Rossignol is named at the start too, you can’t expect much more! The only thing I did notice is that there is no book publisher mentioned for the manufacturing, which I haven’t seen before. Use of Space As you can see, the pages are filled and the text is placed either on empty areas or outside of the main focal point of an image. The art goes right up to the page edge to maximise its use of the space and the binding helps the pages open fully to reduce image loss. A great job for getting the most out of the book. Value This is hard to comment on as it is not available at retail and arrived via the Kickstarter campaign. The standard edition of the book was £40 though and that is more than reasonable for the quality of the content and the physical book itself. I’ve not seen details on a retailer release yet, but keep an eye out for that. A RRP of £40/$55 would be a very fair price for the book. Verdict Mileships is an excellent book and a portal to a new place, one that that feels lived in and full of history. It doesn’t waste time in setting sail and taking you along for the ride, offering a unique mix of first-hand tales and written documents to compliment an impressive visual spectacle. It may not be a story in the conventional sense, but if you like the artwork and love strong worldbuilding, you will find a lot to enjoy in this book! If there are any updates in the future of Mileships heading to retail, I will report that here. Tags; #Kickstarter #NarrativeArtbook #IanMcQue

  • Flip Through - The Art of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl

December 12th 2025 Continuing the run of new release previews, The Artbook Collector YouTube channel has added another book that was published this month, The Art of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl from Dark Horse! The book is one of three of the video game artbook releases from Dark Horse Books on December 2nd 2025, this time made in partnership with the game's developer GSC Game World. It comes as a hardcover with 224 pages of artwork and insights and arrives just after the PlayStation 5 release of the survival-shooter. Inside you will find artwork for the locations within the Zone, the characters, enemies, anomalies, weapons, and mutants of the game, alongside in-game details and some artists insights too. The art for the environments captures the eeriness of the game, especially with the realistic art style, and the exploration of the anomalies collects unique shapes and designs for their look. 3D models are also used throughout alongside the 2D artwork. In my review of the book I highlight that while some of the chapters are strong, others are underserved, with the book in general lacking the early sketches you can find in other releases. You can read my full review here - Book Review - The Art of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl . S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl launched in 2024 on Xbox and PC and is a first-person shooter with survival and horror elements. It's the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game to be released in 15 years from GSC Game World, the Ukrainian based developer, and the fourth in the series. It is again set in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone and is explored as an open-world filled with deadly anomalies, violent mutants, and enemy humans, all of which add to the danger of the post-apocalyptic world of the game. It features mechanics like hunger, sleep, and weapon degradation, making it a challenging game as you progress through its non-linear story. It has since launched on PlayStation 5 a year later on November 20th 2025. • Book Review - Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho

December 11th 2025 In 2023 Sabotage Studio released the role-playing game Sea of Stars , winning over the hearts of players and picking up some well-deserved awards too. Its combat, characters, and world were complimented by the visuals of the game, with the stunning pixel art continuing in this year’s DLC, Throes of the Watchmaker . Back with another artbook, 3dtotal Publishing are giving fans a look the art that helped make it happen in Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho ! Concept artist and illustrator Bryce Kho continued working with Sabotage Studio for the new DLC, bringing life to the characters and enemies. This new book was funded on Kickstarter along with his solo book, Overflow: The Art of Bryce Kho , but also acts as a follow up to the original artbook last year, Sea of Stars: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho . Set for release on December 16th, a copy has arrived here from the crowdfunding campaign, so let’s jump in. Build Quality Like the original, this comes as a 23.5cm x 31cm hardcover book, this time coming in at just 64 pages to cover the new content. The lower page count is all the book needs, but I’m happy it still came as a hardcover despite this and it allows it to match the artbook for the main game. It uses good quality paper and the binding is great too, as expected with the size. The standout yet again is the cover, which uses gold foil to highlight elements of the custom artwork. They could use a promotional piece for the cover, but having this art created just for the book gives it a special touch and it looks incredible. Content This additional volume had a lot to live up to for me, as the book for the base game is one of my favourites, fortunately though, it packs a lot of punch in its 64 pages! Inside you’ll find early and developed designs for the characters of Throes of the Watchmaker , from common enemies to the bosses. Kho’s art is as charming and creative as ever, coming up with multiple unique ideas based on the same description of what was needed. From here, it moves on to colour pieces that build on the idea to create the final design, allowing readers to see the process and that’s always appreciated. Like before—and something I’m really happy to see return—the book abandons conventional insights and replaces them with the Slack messages between Bryce Kho and the game’s director, Thierry Boulanger. This allows us to see what was requested, Kho’s breakdowns of his ideas, the feedback, and then development, all alongside the art. It’s very effective and much more organic, giving fans an inside look rarely seen in game development. It also shows that beyond just the designs, Kho was giving ideas and concepts for the attacks too, a nice detail people may not have known without the book. Unlike the previous book though, the in-game concepts are for the characters only and not environments, but the back does add in sections for t-shirt designs, key art, and the covers for the two artbooks. I love to see these and they are approached in the same way, with early ideas and then then the final result. This is again uncommon to see, but a very welcome inclusion and highlights the talent of Kho beyond just working on the game itself. It’s hard to give personal highlights as I’m a big fan of the art style and game, as well as impressed with the choices of what to include from start to finish. The personality of the characters combined with the expert colour work makes it easy to see why Bryce Kho was not only got hired to work on the game, but gets this second dedicated showcase too. For specific designs though, I really liked the pages for Monsieur Tendu, Fardush, the Shield Cog Knight, and the superb book covers. Overall, this is the perfect continuation to the previous book, acting as a DLC in itself. It kept the same formula and delivered more wonderful art and insights, and I couldn’t be happier with their choice to do it this way. Credits The biggest credit for the artwork is on the font cover and that covers 99% of the book! There are some additional credits on the first page for the sprites too, each of which are found at the bottom of pages to correspond to their character designs. A thoughtful detail and I’m happy to see them credited here. Use of Space The positives continue, because as you can see, all of the pages make good use of the space, minimizing empty areas and the layouts are clear too. Backgrounds are kept simple, but in multiple colours to make it more interesting, while not distracting from the art and text. The pages open fully and that prevents any image loss in the centre fold in the few spreads that art does cross over, so a strong showing for this part of the review too. Value Throes of the Watchmaker: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho has an RRP of $22/ £15 which makes sense for the book. Although it may be a quarter of the size, I would hardly expect the price to be cut that far down too, it still has to cover the production costs and comes as a hardcover after all. I do think this is a reasonable price point, fans of the game and those that own the first volume will see good value here. I always check for discounts too and, at the time of writing this before its publication date, it is down to £12.99 on Amazon UK, a small drop, but it’s a highly recommendable price. No discount in the US, although the UK is always jumping the gun on reductions. It’s also worth noting that 3dtotal Publishing donates half of their profits to charity, so it’s a company worth supporting. Verdict Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho is another superb showcase of the talent of Bryce Kho and how the designs are created for the game. It may be small in size, but the art, thoughtfulness of the approach, and book design allows it to punch above its weight. Like its predecessor, this comes highly recommended to fans of Sea of Stars , Bryce Kho, and character design in general! • Book Review - WondLa: The Art & Making of the Limited Series

December 9th 2025 The animated show WondLa became a hit on Apple TV following its premier in 2024, successfully adapting the book series from author Tony DiTerlizzi into a 20-part series. Now going from book to show to book, Skydance Animation have partnered with publisher Titan Books to give fans a look at the art that helped create the show, guiding us through what it takes to bring an alien inhabited Earth to life. WondLa: The Art & Making of the Limited Series  was released on December 2nd 2025, perfectly timed for the end of Season 3 in November, allowing those not wanting to leave Eva 9 behind a chance to get more from the show. A copy was kindly sent to me by Titan Books, so I can jump in to what you will see is an impressive look at the show! Build Quality The book comes as a 28.5cm x 26cm hardcover with 176 pages, what you expect for an animation artbook. The paper is high quality and the binding is very good too, letting the pages open with ease and lay flat. It’s also a wonderful cover choice, the pink pops and makes it stand out, drawing the eye and highlighting the impressive visuals of the series. It’s everything you want from an artbook! Content Collectors of artbooks may know that titles with ‘Art and Making of’ can sometimes be light on the art side, however, that is far from an issue here. The book is packed with artwork and covers all 3 seasons of the show, alongside a lot of insights from the creative team too. Readers are treated to early sketches, full colour concepts, storyboards, and final renders. I always want to see the early and unused designs through to what made it to the screen, and the team delivered here. The book starts a little more text heavy, speaking to the creation of the show and how DeTerlizzi (who was also a producer on the show), worked with Skydance to adapt the books. Throughout you get insights from many members of the team about adapting the book, changes made, challenges of scale and budget, influences, and more. There’s little wonder the show became a hit, members of the team have worked on some of the biggest movies inside and outside of animation. It’s a joy to read and fans will learn a lot in their time with the book. Of course, all of this experience lend itself well to the artwork, which is superb. From the early designs of the characters, to the colourful locations of the places Eva 9 visits, the talent of the team behind WondLa is on full display on every page. There is a lot more pages for the first season of the show, but that’s in part due to the introduction of the main characters, such as Eva 9, Muthr, Rovender Kitt, Otto, and villain of the first season Besteel. The early designs for the characters are interesting too, showing a nice range of designs as it’s made clear some changes would be made from the books and that offers flexibility. The character art throughout is excellent and captures the personalities and charm of the cast, even in the earliest ideas. After this, the book follows the progression of the story, showing art for the locations and their characters, creatures, assets, vehicles, and more. Like the early character pages, there is a balanced mix of early ideas, developed designs, and final renders. The interviews mentioned that there are a lot of locations in the series and that means this release also features an interesting collection of concepts as a result. This range includes Eva 9’s home of Sanctuary, the colourful plants of Orbona, the elegant city of Solas, and decaying remains of New York. I liked these pages a lot and seeing contrasting designs is always a highlight of any artbook. The individual elements of these places are also great, such as creatures like sandsnipers and air whales, characters, plants, buildings, alien species, and costume design. It paints a complete picture of the art teams work, as opposed to just the vistas and architecture of these locations. Not to leave anything out, there are also pages on the soundtrack created by Joy Ngiaw, a storyboard breakdown of a scene, and a colour script of the first season. It’s a well thought out and balanced collection of artwork and insights, delivering a lot of details amongst the large volume of concepts and designs. When it comes to the content, WondLa: The Art & Making of the Limited Series delivers on all fronts! Credits The positives don’t stop at the art and insights, as the artists are credited on every page, so you can see who is responsible for each piece featured throughout. Animation artbooks are usually very good for this and Titan Books and Skydance made sure to keep that going with their own book. Use of Space As you can see in the previews, pages are filled with art, making the most of the space available. Text is placed in areas that still allows the art to breathe too, helping with the clear readability of everything presented inside. Layouts are not the same spread to spread to keep it feeling sterile and many of the concepts are without a border, so more can be placed on the page. The binding helps here too, as there is no image loss in the centre fold for the incredible looking larger pieces that do cross over it. Value The book has an RRP of $50/ £40, putting in the mix competitively with other animation artbooks. For a good quality hardcover like this, I think those that love the show and want more will be happy with what they receive. Discounts are always good though and checking Amazon highlights that some are already available on books release week. Though deals change, in the US it is currently 12% off, with the UK giving a generous 23% reduction. With price drops available, it sets this up as a nice end of year treat or gift! Verdict WondLa: The Art & Making of the Limited Series is the perfect companion to the show, coming with the details and inspiration behind its development and visuals, backed up by hundreds of pieces of great art. It’s generous with its inclusion of unused designs and presented in a well-designed volume, making it easy to recommend to WondLa fans, artists, and collectors. Titan Books and Skydance Animation have released a strong entry into the animation artbook space, putting it up there with some of the other popular series that collectors will be familiar with. Hopefully this won’t be their last collaboration, as more books like this would be most welcome in the collection here! • Flip Through - The Art of DOOM: The Dark Ages

December 8th 2025 Another week with two video previews for The Artbook Collector YouTube channel following the heavy month of releases for December! This time is a look at the art from the team at id Software for their most recent DOOM game, The Dark Ages ! Made in partnership again with Dark Horse Books, The Art of DOOM: The Dark Ages is a 216-page hardcover that was released on December 2nd 2025 in a matching format to the previous two games for DOOM. It gives player a look at the art and designs that helped create this new chapter in the life of the Doom Slayer, perfect for those not done with demons and hellscapes after finishing the game. As seen in the preview above, inside are early sketches, full colour concept pieces, and 3D models for the characters, demons, locations, and weapons of the game. It's light on text, only giving in-game descriptions, but that gives it a heavy art focus which is complimented by the page design and high print quality. Fans of creature design will appreciate the demon art, which is always incredible from the team, showing alternative and unused designs, as well as a page of demons that were cut entirely. In my review of the book I highlighted that the quality of the book is great as always from the publisher and that the design and use of credits is fantastic. The art focus works well and fans will find a lot to enjoy throughout. Artist insights over in-game details would have been preferred though. You can read more details on this and more here - Book Review - The Art of DOOM: The Dark Ages . DOOM: The Dark Ages was released in 2025 and acts as a prequel to DOOM 2016, showing the story of the Slayer earlier on in a medieval-inspired setting. It changes the gameplay too, focusing on parrying and brute force over the speed and manoeuvrability of the previous two games. It also introduced open area exploration, a deeper narrative, and set pieces, in which you ride a flying demon and control a giant mech. The dark fantasy twist on the series resonated with fans and the game was also received well by critics, showing that even after 30 years, the DOOM series is stronger than ever.
