Another new artbook release is on the The Artbook Collector YouTube channel this week, with a look at the animated Apple TV show, WondLa!
WondLa: The Art & Making of the Limited Series from Titan Books and Skydance Animation showcases the artwork and 3D models behind the show in a 176-page hardcover book. It was released on December 2nd and comes just after the final season ended, perfect timing for fans wanting more from Eva 9 and a look behind the scenes.
The release follows in the footsteps of other great animation artbooks, highlighting early and unused designs for the characters and world of the show, from sketches to full-colour pieces. As well as this, insights from the artists and creatives of WondLa are featured throughout, offering details about how the show came about and the reasons for some of the changes from Tony DiTerlizzi's books.
In my review I spoke to the quality of the artwork and book design, praising the collection of images and commentary throughout. It stands with books from other animation artbook publishers, including Abrams Books and Chronicle Books. You can read more here; Book Review - WondLa: The Art & Making of the Limited Series.
WondLa is an animated sci-fi series made for Apple TV and is based on The Search for WondLa books from author Tony DiTerlizzi. It follows teenage girl Eva 9 as she is forced to leave her underground sanctuary, emerging into an unrecognisable alien world. Raised by a robot named M.U.T.H.R., Eva goes on to meet and travel with different alien characters and species, explore new landscapes, and discover the history of what happened to what was once planet Earth. Skydance Animation delivered high quality animation for the series, bringing the characters and story to life for fans of the books, as well as those new to WondLa. The third and final season aired in November 2025, just before the release of this artbook.
