February 6th 2026 On the The Artbook Collector YouTube channel this week is a preview of the The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte , the latest artbook from publisher Abrams Books! After 4 years without an artbook, the live-action Star Wars projects are showcasing their concept art again, starting with this release on February 3d 2026. Fans of The Acolyte may not get to enjoy another season, but a look at the concepts and design for the show can now be added to their shelves. Alongside this are interviews with the show runners, actors, and artists to add more insights behind the High Republic's live-action debut. The review of the book was very positive, because it not only delivered exceptional art as expected for for a Star Wars release, but the book is well-made, the page design uses the full space of the page, the interviews offer a lot of details, and the artists and credited on every page. It does everything very well, so those that are interested in the book will find a lot to enjoy. You can the full review here - Book Review . - Book Review - The Infinity Saga – Black Panther: The Art of the Movie
February 6th 2026 Black Panther made his solo movie debut in 2018 and introduced viewers to the hidden world of Wakanda within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shortly after its release, Marvel released an artbook for the movie, but after 8 years it has become expensive to buy. Fortunately, it has now received a re-release from publisher Titan Books as part of The Infinity Saga series! Marvel Studios’ The Infinity Saga – Black Panther: The Art of the Movie hit shelves on February 3rd 2026 in the UK and arrives March 10th in the US, allowing those interested in the concept art behind the movie to add the book to their collection. Titan Books have kindly sent me a review copy, and as someone that owns and thinks highly of the original, I can also compare the releases as well. Content The book comes with 296 pages of artwork and insights for Black Panther, containing the same content found in the 2018 original. It features hundreds of concept pieces and highlights how much work goes into making the movies, shining the light on the extraordinary talent of the visual development team. There is so much here that fans could revisit the book an endless number of times and never get tired of seeing what’s inside. Marvel Studios have always had some of the best artists working for them and this movie was perfect for putting their creativity on display. Black Panther may be set on earth, but because it introduces the advanced civilization and setting of Wakanda, there is a lot of world building developed through the art. From the technology driven city and science labs, to the landscapes and the deep culture of its people, there is so much this book shares that it makes it stand out in the series of artbooks in this regard. Alongside the incredible world building are a look at the characters too. A highlight of course is for the Black Panther suit, which has 12 spreads of designs to bring the iconic character from page to screen with a range of colours, patterns, and details. It’s always fun to see the ideas that didn’t get used and this book shares a huge number of them. Suit and costume designs for Killmonger, Okoye, Shuri, and more, also get explored with detailed designs that bring the characters to life. The book is very generous with how much is shared and part of the reason Marvel artbooks are so attractive to fans. Keyframes are included as they are in all of the Marvel books, wonderfully displaying dynamic artwork for moments of the movie, such as the final battle and the car chase scene, making them again a personal highlight for me in the book. There so many other incredible concepts and designs that it is hard to talk about highlights, because there is a new one to find on each page. There’s something here for everyone; suits, Klaue’s arm designs, Wakanda’s concepts, keyframes, costumes rich in African culture, and so much more. This is a superb collection of art that you can get lost in for a long time. Text throughout adds even more to get into, going beyond just describing what you’re seeing and giving detailed insights into the designs and the making of the movie itself. The text is a little smaller than seen in other books, but that’s because there is so much shared in the interviews, they had to make room. These are done with the creators and artists, including Director Ryan Coogler, President Kevin Feige, and the artists themselves such as Jackson Sze, Tully Summers, Karla Ortiz, and more. Each have a lot to share about creating Black Panther , including the approach to the visuals, the character details, and influences. It’s also great to hear from the actors, with Chadwick Boseman, Winston Duke, Daniel Kaluuya, and others, lending their thoughts on the movie and characters, taking this beyond just an art focused book. This is something that the Marvel series of artbooks has always been very good at, with this being a strong release in the line-up. Credits Business as usual for Marvel with this entry in the series, as the artists are credited on each page with their surname, so you can see exactly who did what throughout. On top of this, there is a page in the back of the book with the names of the artists in full, each with a list of the page numbers they are featured on. This approach has always been appreciated and the studio has been great at giving full recognition to their artists. Build Quality Onto the comparison to the 2018 original now, simply titled Marvel’s Black Panther: The Art of the Movie . Both come as a hardcover, with the new Titan Book’s version using a dustjacket, as opposed to a slipcase. While people do like the slipcases from Marvel as they are thick and protective, it does increase the price significantly. Keeping the price down with a dustjacket is a move that I like, as it makes the books accessible to more people. The Infinity Saga books are smaller at 24cm x 27cm in size, but it’s still not far off the 24.5cm x 29.5cm size of the originals without the slipcase. What is significant though, is that the new book is just as thick as the original while inside the slipcase. This is due to the thicker pages that add an improved level of quality to the new edition. It’s a welcome upgrade that puts the paper used on par with most other artbook releases, as opposed to the thinner paper Marvel use. Below compares the size of the original slipcase to the new book, then the 2018 books itself to Titan Books' latest release. The paper used does mean the binding had to change as well, but this is also a step up over the original because it uses more page signatures (groups of pages), that allows the spreads to open with ease. A book that is close to 300 pages can suffer dramatically with image loss in the centre fold, but because of the binding that has been minimised, especially in the centre of the book that display double page spreads wonderfully. Only small adjustments have been made to keep the original content and design in the new resize, but the team at Titan Books have done an excellent job with this. The print quality is also fantastic, but most notably for the darker pictures, in which the lighter print of The Infinity Saga version allows readers to see more details. This is perfect for Black Panther , as many of the concept pieces unsurprisingly have darker tones. Below is a comparison photo, with The Infinity Saga book at the top and the Marvel original below, highlighting the change in the print finish and small sizing adjustments. Use of Space The pages are kept very simple in their design, aiming to make as much use of the space as possible for artwork and it’s wonderfully executed. There’s nothing fancy here, plain backgrounds with the occasional colour change to keep the art the main focus. I often like this approach for books that fill the pages as much as this, as it reduces distractions while only leaving gaps for the text. When you’re sitting on gold, you don’t need to decorate it with glitter, so this restraint works very well. Value Like other recent releases in the series, The Infinity Saga – Black Panther: The Art of the Movie has an RRP of $50/ £35, a solid starting price point. The original release can still be bought online, but can go into triple digits for a copy that is new or in good condition, making this a great option for buyers. For the quality of the book and the artwork inside, a look behind the scenes at this price is very fair. Comparing using Amazon, it is 21% off on the week of release in the UK, giving it even better value at under £30. Just before release in the US there is currently no discount, but these will come and go as they often do, but the full price is still more than worth what you get here. Verdict Marvel Studios’ The Infinity Saga – Black Panther: The Art of the Movie is another exceptional collection of artwork and an engaging joy to sit with. Titan Books have again delivered a high-quality re-release of an older artbook, adding improvements to an already highly recommended release. If you’re a fan of Black Panther , this more than deserves a spot on your shelf, especially now with a newly released and easily accessible edition. What was a stronger entry in the original series is now the same in The Infinity Saga series! - 'The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte' Coming February After Delay
December 29th 2025 Suffering from a third delay, The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte has been moved out of January by publisher Abrams Books, as spotted on the listings of retailers. The hardcover book was announced at SDCC 2024 for release in July 2025, but was later given a new release date of October at another event. However, it was silently pushed back again to January 13th 2026. As is not uncommon in the artbook world, another set back has hit the release and only noticed when checking listings of the book online. It is now expected to arrive on February 3rd 2026, fortunately a shorter delay than those that came before. Waiting an extra month isn't that long in the grand scheme of things, given that the last artbook for a Star Wars live-action project was The Art of Star Wars: The Mandalorian (Season Two) , which was published in February of 2022. This new book will be the first artbook in 4 years, a gap that has never been explained, but is slowly being filled by future releases. The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte will allow fans to see the concept art behind the show that was set during the High Republic time period. It will highlight the designs for the characters, ships, locations, and more, alongside insights from the creators. The Star Wars artbooks have always been excellent, so their return will be welcomed with open arms by fans and collectors. It's not alone though, as two more books are also coming for fans. First is The Art of Star Wars: Andor , which covers both seasons of the show and is expected to arrive next year. Second is The Art of the Mandalorian and Grogu that delivers a look at the new movie, season three of their TV series, and also The Book of Bobba Fett . - 'The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte' Previews: The Stranger, Mae the Sith, and More!
January 28th 2025 Over a year after the show premiered, The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte is out next week with a release date of February 3rd 2026. After some date changes for the release, Abrams Books is ready to return with another artbook for a live-action Star Wars project, with a look at the concept art behind The Acolyte , but before then, check out some previews of the book here! Before diving inside of the book, any collector knows that when a book comes with a dustjacket as this one does, you should always take a peak under the cover to see what is hidden underneath. In the case of The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte , there is a wrap-around concept image of Osha and Mae facing off from artist Gabriel Yeganyan. Sticking with Mae, the book explores her look as a Sith, leaning into a medieval visual style for the costume design. Artists Brian Matyas explains this as quoted on the page; "To keep the idea that this period is 'medieval Star Wars', I wanted the costuming to be influenced by plate armor but made with a material like plastoid." The below spread features art from Matyas and Star Wars royalty, Doug Chiang. Jecki Lon, played by Dafne Keen, is also highlighted in the book, with a piece of her in human form, but also with sketches of her potential design as a half-Theelin too, a homage to backup singer Rystáll Sant who was added to the Special Edition of Return of the Jedi . Artist Jeremy Woodhead adds his insights to these sketches, giving the following details; "For Jecki, there were two or three boards with with ten or fifteen drawings on each with different ideas. We always had the horns, and we always had the pale skin, then we experimented with different colors and hairstyles. A lot of references we made at the time [of the Special Editions] were very eighties, so I wanted to steer away from that. It looked a bit too decade-specific. That's why I went for the oranges and the yellows, rather than the pinks and purples. The was something a little bit jarring about the neon pink." Art below by Eleanor Barlow, Callum Alexander Watt, Jeremy Woodhead, Adam Burn, and Jacob Clare. Of course, the book wouldn't be complete without a look at the antagonist, 'The Stranger'. Artwork for his menacing helmet had been shared online before, including the striking piece below on the left from Martin Rezard. However, this book presents the art in a high quality print finish on the page, which is a great size with the book coming in at 30cm x 27.5cm, as well as the artist credits and insights. Show creator Leslye Headland notes that some of the designs were inspired by Rorschach from Watchmen , highlighting that his look could have been very different to what made it on-screen. Page art below by Martin Rezard, Andre Gilbert, Luke Fisher, and Nick Tyrrell. Darth Plagueis is also shown in The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte , although very little is shared in keeping with the teaser at the end of the series. However, it does include a 3D model of his head made by Saby Menyhei, which offers a more detailed look at his design. Leslye Headland shares that before the design was even created, she knew she wanted a reveal similar to Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring , one that was hugely effective. The concept of his reveal on the right, also from Menyhei, closely resembles the final shot without the hood. The spread also offers a look at the broken helmet of The Stranger from artist Nick Tyrrell, revealing the face of the character played by Manny Jacinto. There is of course much more featured in the book, including a look at more characters, ships, locations, keyframes, technology, and storyboards. Star Wars has a long history with artbooks that have consistently been excellent releases, making this a book to consider adding to your shelf if you're a fan of The Acolyte . A review for the book is coming soon with more previews, as well as my in-depth thoughts for fans wanting to know more. There are also more Star Wars artbooks coming in 2026 too, with The Art of Star Wars: Andor out on June 30th, and The Art of the Mandalorian and Grogu being published November 3rd, which features art for season three of the TV series and The Book of Bobba Fett . To end, I would kindly ask that anyone that chooses to share the images and details here please credit this as a news source to help people discover this solo run website and discover more artbooks. - Book Review - The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte
January 29th 2026 After almost 4 years without an artbook for a live-action Star War project, Abrams Books are back to give fans a new entry for their collection with The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte . Based on the series from Leslye Headland, the book features the art behind the High Republic story and offers those wanting more from its world a chance to get lost in it all over again. With a publication date of February 3 rd 2026, the anticipated return of the artbook series had a lot to live up to following the excellence of previous releases. With a copy now in the collection, I can now give my thoughts on the book, while highlighting what you can expect inside. Build Quality Matching the previous tie-in artbooks from Abrams, this comes as a 30cm x 27.5cm hardcover with a dustjacket. The book is well-made as expected, the cover is solid and the binding feels secure for the thick paper it uses. It’s everything you could want from an artbook and so collectors will be happy with the quality found here. The cover seen above is on the dustjacket and comes with a concept piece on the back. Underneath is a wrap-around concept from Gabriel Yeganyan seen below, a reminder to always check under a dustjacket for more great artwork. Content The book fits a lot in to its 224 pages, something the series has always been excellent at. Featured are early and more developed pieces for the characters, ships, weapons, locations, keyframes, and more. A huge amount for The Acolyte is covered and that’s great news for fans interested in seeing what didn’t make it to the screen. You won’t be surprised to know that the artwork inside is incredible throughout. Some of the best artists in the industry work on Star Wars and this book does an excellent job at collecting pieces that showcase their talent. From the lighter tones of the Jedi robes and more sinister look of the Sith costumes, to the streets of Olega and keyframes of The Stranger fight in the forest, the range and details the team showcase are stunning and will be appreciated by anyone that pores over them. Highlights for me included a storyboard spread seen below of Sol reuniting with Osha, an aspect of a show’s creation that isn’t always highlighted, but its presence here is most welcome with its comic-like art style that expresses emotions wonderfully. Shown in my early preview article , the costume design work is also a standout, with Mae in Sith clothing and The Stranger’s helmet being standouts. The Sith armour is heavily influenced by medieval designs and gets the spotlight here, an example of what makes these books worth seeing, as what didn’t make it to the screen is just as good as what did. The menacing helmet designs of The Stranger will also draw attention as well, providing a horror aspect to the art inside. It’s easy to go on and on about favourite parts of this book, as there are so many, including the fun art for the beaver-like Tynnans, and a lot of varied alien, ship, and location concepts that make Star Wars special. The Art of Star War: The Acolyte packs in a lot of spectacular artwork that will leave no fan disappointed. As well as this, there are a huge number of insights featured through interviews, impressive given how much art is inside. Using text that is smaller than seen in some other books, they did a very good job at sharing a lot of details about the making of the show, as well as notes from artists about their work. Each chapter starts with text that gets deeper into the production, with a lot of insider details that Star Wars geeks will love, such as the pitch for the show, its Back to the Future Part II codename ‘Paradox’, changing the colours of the Jedi to be more colourful, changes to Coruscant, and more. The notes from artists and show creators for individual images are more than just vague descriptions, they present another layer of engagement, such as mentioning inspirations, lore, artistic approach, and the ideas of the show creators and actors. I found myself reading everything with great interest and it added a lot of value to the book. Credits Keeping the positivity going, artists are credited on every page and for every image, which is always the best way to do it. As well as this, as seen below, a spread at the front of the book shares not only the names of the contributors, but their job roles too, putting the spotlight on concept and VFX artists, set decorators, costume designers, and more. This is something that has always been done well by Abrams Books and Lucasfilm, so its continuation is always appreciated. Use of Space As you can see in the previews, the team at Abrams did a fantastic job at using the full space of the page to give the art and text room to breathe. The backgrounds are kept blank, which is always effective when the art takes centre stage like it does here, because any background designs or images would only distract and make the pages feel cluttered. Double page spreads benefit from the binding too, as there is little to no image loss in the book, with an example seen below. Keeping it simple, but mixing up the layouts throughout has worked incredibly well, another highlight of this release. Value The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte comes with an RRP of $50/ £37, which is expected for an artbook of this size and is competitive on the market. For the quality of the book and the content found inside, I think this is a good price point for fans and collectors. Looking at Amazon as always for consistency, the book is 9% off in the US, a nice reduction for bargain hunters, and a huge 30% off in the UK, which is always heavier on discounts before a book release. These deals come and go, but show that even with the RRP being a fair price, there is still even better value here for people looking to find a deal. Verdict The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte is a superb collection of artwork from some of the best, with insights that add more to captivate fans of the short-lived series. The Acolyte may have ended after just one season, but this is the perfect companion to the show that adds more to the viewing experience, as well as a look at designs that never came to be. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would highly recommend it to those wanting more from a galaxy far, far away! - Flip Through - The Art Rust
January 30th 2026 The first new artbook of 2026 has joined The Artbook Collector YouTube channel this week, highlighting the new release from Dark Horse in partnership with Facepunch Studios, The Art of Rust ! The hardcover was published on January 27th 2026 and comes with 184 pages of artwork for the online survival game, from the characters and weapons, to the environments and assets used to help the player survive the game's world and enemies. Also included in the book is a chapter of the DLC and events, perfect given the long life Rust , which was released in early access in 2013, before the official retail release in 2018. Players new and old will find a lot of interesting pieces of art inside, especially the ideas that are shown that didn't make it to the game. From unused clothing, to a 4 legged robot that carries loot, Facepunch Studios share things that will engage fans. Of course, the artwork perfectly captures the decaying and industrial feel of the game's distinct visuals. In my review of the book I praised the production quality and recommend it to fans for the range of stages of art. For collectors of artbooks in general, the nature of a game like this does however mean that it lacks the type of art seen in other books, including keyframes and story moments. Lost in Cult are back with another entry in their Designs Works series, this time looking at the development and visuals of Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector from developer Jump Over the Age. This comes as part of a series of new goodies for the game to celebrate its one year anniversary. Citizen Sleeper 2: Design Works is coming in Q3-4 of 2026 from the UK based publisher, providing fans of the dice-driven RPG a look at the artwork, diagrams, and development details of the game. Announced on social media, the 250-page hardcover is available to pre-order now on the Lost in Cult website . Author John Rogers guides you through the creation of The Starward Belt, but Citizen Sleeper 2: Design Works also comes with interviews with Gareth Damian Martin, Guillaume Singelin, and Amos Roddy, to give further insights into what it took to bring the sequel to life. This includes a look at Singelin's sketchbook and how Roddy's soundscape came together, highlighting that, like previous Design Works books, this is the ultimate deep dive—or deep voyage—into the game. The release is of course not complete without artwork too, which showcases characters, environments, and more, as seen below. Not looking to break tradition, a Deluxe Edition is also available to pre-order until March 31st that will allow those wanting some extra goodies to fill up their shelf even more. As well as the 250-page book, the following is included; 4 art prints A bookmark A premium magnetic-clasp presentation box SPINDLEJACK tabletop roleplaying game including: 10 x themed D6 dice Gatefold rule pamphlet Gatefold story pamphlet Gatefold shop pamphlet Gatefold map pamphlet Intersection boards Tracking sliders Stickers to customise the box However, Lost in Cult didn't stop there, as this is also their first sequel book in the series, so the publisher is going back and giving Citizen Sleeper: Design Works a reprint as well. Those that missed out on getting a look at the art and behind-the-scenes details of the first game will be able to get their hands on a copy when it releases alongside the new book. Not stopping there, and on a mission to treat players of the game, the in-game tabletop RPG Spindlejack will be available to buy separately, as well as an updated physical and digital copy of the tarot card based tabletop game Cycles of the Eye from the original Citizen Sleeper . As well as this a new vinyl is available for Citizen Sleeper 2 , for those wanting to get lost in its soundscapes, with a reprint also coming for the first game's vinyl too, offering a lot of options for people who are not looking to end their experience after venturing through the cosmos. If you want to empty the wallet a little more, the Anniversary Edition comes with the Deluxe Edition of Citizen Sleeper 2: Design Works , an A2 print featuring Guillaume Singelin's artwork signed by Gareth Damian Martin, a limited Sleeper Yellow vinyl with Amos Roddy's score, and a Citizen Sleeper 2 -themed vinyl slipmat. - Book Review - The Art of Rust
January 27th 2026 Facepunch Studios introduced players to the world of Rust in 2013 through early access, winning them over with its survival mechanics and freedom within its world. Over a decade later, people a still deeply invested in the game, but there had never been an artbook... until now. The Art of Rust from publisher Dark Horse was released on January 27th 2026, allowing fans to add a volume of artwork to their shelves. A copy of the book is now here, so I can give you my thoughts on the new release! Build Quality Unsurprisingly, Dark Horse deliver the goods again with another video game artbook, maintaining their high production quality. The book comes in their usual format as a 23.5cm x 21cm hardcover, this time with 184 pages. The binding is strong, perfect for the thick paper used in their releases, but it still provides enough flexibility to allow the pages to fully open up too. Reliable as always, it’s one of the best things about the publisher! Content Inside the book is split into chapters that cover all aspects of the gameplay; Characters, Bases & World, Weapons & Tech, Vehicles, and Events & DLC. It’s what we have come to expect from an artbook and that’s not a bad thing, with this book having an unsurprisingly heavier focus on the environments and assets for the genre. The art itself has a grounded style, but comes with a variety in the level of detail, from looser artwork to more detailed pieces. This also includes 3D models for concepting ideas too, offering a nice mix of techniques from the art team. The world of Rust is full of decay, custom built technology, and industrial remains, all of which are of course found in the artwork for the assets and types of locations players visit. It’s a well-balanced mix of styles and development stages throughout as you can see in the previews. A highlight of the book is that unused designs are shown throughout the chapters, not just variants of things that were used either, but ideas that never made it into the game at all. These include Cobalt branded sharks, unused climbing boots, an interesting four-legged robot called CAML, and a submarine frozen in ice. It’s always appreciated when things like this are included, because it makes for an interesting peak behind the curtain. Including the chapter ‘Events & DLC’ at the end is a thoughtful move that takes the elements of the previous chapters and condenses them into a look at some of the content added to the game. Featured is artwork for their themed updates, such as Chinese New Year, Halloween, and Easter. With the game being out for so long, it makes sense to include this for people that have been surviving the Rust ’s world during its many seasons. There’s not a huge amount of reading in The Art of Rust , though text is scattered frequently throughout. It’s made up of short paragraphs, giving descriptions of what you see, as well as some nuggets if information like inspirations, materials, and style. There are some nice insights here, but it’s not too in-depth, so it is therefore complimentary, rather than a selling point of the book. The downside for me is that as there isn’t too much text and a lot of the designs are of single assets or characters, such as gates, buildings, clothing, weapons, and base materials, which makes it feel like a retailer catalogue for a large portion of the book. Without set characters and narrative scenes found in other game genres, there is less art with full backgrounds or character/ gameplay moments, so it lacks the dynamic pieces seen in other books. The environment art of biomes and locations stand out for this reason (seen below), and while the rest of the art is still great, it may not be as appealing to collectors wanting keyframes, storyboards, animation concepts, key art, and more. Credits Sadly, the art on the page isn’t credited, so it’s impossible to know who did what. In the front of the book are a list of names of staff at Facepunch Studios, but it’s not noted what their job roles are. The list includes the COO’s, but does have artists too. Included are Howard Schechtman, Paul Bradley, Megan Tupper, Sam Kemp, Taylor Reynolds, and more, who are the creators of the art, but I can only tell you that from looking up each name online. This list is also included on the publisher details page that most people would skip as well, which is a shame for the artists involved. Use of Space The layouts throughout the book are simple, but fill the pages in a clean and easily readable way that gives the art a good amount of space. The designs of the backgrounds are interesting, because the use of multiple flat tones in rectangles with some 45° angles is effective at separating elements on the page, however, it’s very modern and doesn’t match the visual theme of Rust . A large number of books don’t design pages to match the look of the game or movie they are based on, often kept simple or even sterile, but they at least aren’t in a conflicting style. It doesn’t affect the quality of the book, although it did stand out to me. The binding comes into play with the page design, as there is little to no image loss in the centre fold for art that is placed over it, which is always fantastic to see. Overall, the team did a great job at keeping the art the main focus, although it does exaggerate the catalogue feel mentioned before. Value A look at the art behind Rust comes with an RRP of $54.99/ £49.99, which is the standard now for a Dark Horse artbook. The production quality of the book and print finish justifies the price point, especially as with the right care, a hardcover like this will last a very long time. As always, I compare prices on Amazon to stay consistent, and at the time of writing this just before the official release, the book has already been 20% off in the UK. Given that £40 is around $55 with current exchange rates, it makes sense that the UK has a price drop already as it is more expensive without one. No discounts in the US yet, but there are always price fluctuations as many collectors will know. I will always say a deal is worth looking for, but if you’re a player in the wasteland and like what you see in these previews, you won’t be let down by the quality at full price. Verdict The Art of Rust delivers a look at the concept art for a lot of what makes up the game, with the environments and unused ideas being the highlights. There is a heavier focus on single assets and character pieces compared to most releases that buyers should be aware of, but those that are curious to see that will find a lot to enjoy. Whether this book is worth buying or not is very much based on your personal preference for the content, because Dark Horse have once again released a well-made book and given the art a strong showcase. It’s very likely though that if you are reading this, you’re a fan of Rust , so are probably expecting they type of concept art highlighted in this review and previews. These types of games don’t aften get an artbook, and although it lacks story and gameplay concepts that can add more variety to other releases, this is a nice way to celebrate the ongoing long life of Rust and its art team. - Flip Through - The Art of Blue Sky Studios
January 23rd 2026 The Artbook Collector YouTube channel looks back at the studio behind some of the biggest animated movie releases, Blue Sky. Sadly no longer around, many people have, and still do, grow up with some of their characters and worlds, and their concept art was shared in The Art of Blue Sky Studios . The hardcover was released in 2014 by Insight Editions (or Titan Books in the UK) and celebrated 15 years of movie magic with a look at artwork for Ice Age , Robots , Rio , Epic , and more. The book is huge and came with 304 pages, giving plenty of space for each movie to get the showcase they deserve. Inside is a look at art for the characters, locations, and key moments of the movies, as well as some 3D models and colourscripts. Alongside the art are insights into the making of the movies, with interviews with the creatives behind the classic releases. All of this makes the book perfect for fans new and old that would like to know more about the worlds Blue Sky Studios created. Seeing the earliest art for some of animations most iconic characters—the hilarious acorn-chasing Scrat being a fan favourite—makes this a welcome addition to any shelf. Blue Sky Studios was founded in 1987 in Connecticut as a visual effects studio, before movie into feature animation. its first big hit was in 2002 with Ice Age , which is now one of the biggest franchises in the genre. The team created 13 movies, including Robots , Rio , Horton Hears a Who! , The Peanuts Movie , and Spies in Disguise . They were known for their family friendly animation, creating titles that appealed to both children and adults, giving them widespread appeal, as well as being watched today by parents introducing a new generation to their childhood favourites. In 2019 Blue Sky was bought by Disney as an asset of 21st Century Fox, but was then sadly closed down in 2021. Ice Age still has life though, as another entry is coming from Disney in 2027. For more, you can check out a flip through of The Art of Ice Age on the YouTube channel here - The Art of Ice Age - Book Flip Through . The Art of Blue Sky Studios can be hard to come by as it is over 10 years old, but copies do still become available in places online, with some stock still available in the UK. - Ultros: Design Works - Interview with the 'Gardenvania' Narrative Designer Pelle Cahndlerby
May 1st 2025 Lost in Cult have been busy growing their Design Works series that provides fans with deep dives into the art and making of video games. Soon to be included is a look at Ultros, the psychedelic 'gardenvania' from developer Hadoque. Ahead of the release of Ultros: Design Works later this year, I spoke with Pelle Cahndlerby about working on the game and what to expect from this new book. As is evident even in the wonderful way he answered my questions, Pelle was the narrative designer and poet for Ultros and will also be featured in the upcoming release. Check out the interview below and be sure to visit Lost in Cult and the book page here . Hi Pelle, thanks for taking the time for answering some questions. Congratulations on the game and now the upcoming Ultros: Design Works! How does it feel to have a new extension of the game being released for fans? Cahndlerby : My pleasure, it's always fun to talk about our cosmic demon when there's a curious and friendly set of ears on the other end. Thank you so much! It feels nice to give the audience a glimpse behind the curtain. The opportunity also gifted the world of Ultros some additional lore and further insights into some paths toward the end. It was great fun to write a bit about the Sarcophagus again. Ultros: Design Works book cover The idea for Ultros came from art director Niklas Åkerblad, at what point did you begin your work in the role of the narrative designer on the game? Cahndlerby : The many seeds that sprouted Ultros were buried into creative soil on as many separate occasions, some closer to each other in time, almost parallel to the demon's pulse. Years before I officially picked up the muse's mantle, I listened to Niklas's ideas about this demonic entity. He had a vision crystallizing, and we had some very giving conversations on philosophy, creativity, and life in general. Sometime later, as the different beats of the demon began to align, he reached out. He said it was time for the poet to enter the fray with bewildering words and narrative prowess. I heard the call, and I answered. It sounds like you were able to hit the ground running. Was there any material already in place for you to look at and help make your start? Cahndlerby : Oh, there were documents, alright! Some had a nice, sturdy structure. Others went all over the place in trails of thought and different approaches. Some overlapped the same subject but with outdated decisions on how to best move forward, and some had an interesting commentary on why this or that had been scrapped. It was a creative melting pot that needed to be dived into to get stratified and analyzed for which ingredients should go with what. Then, for some gentle seasoning, massaging, and kneading before deciding what else to add from my supply. Release trailer for Ultros In a previous interview you spoke about how one of the harder parts of writing for the game was choosing when to include writing and how much, to allow other aspects to take the centre stage. What was involved in that process to make sure you strike the right balance and how did you know when you had achieved that? Cahndlerby : Looking at the outlandish art jumping at you from all corners of the canvas, while having the sweet melancholy of Ratvader's outstanding soundtrack in your ears, I'd be a fool for carelessly throwing as much text as I could at this neon beast. Giving the players too many impressions at once would only add to the abstract confusion that already embraced us. Confusion is good, but if you want to reach beyond the rolling eyes of people thinking we're just being weird for the sake of being strange, you need to edit yourself. And hey, you will always be the advocate for your discipline, that comes with the territory, but you also need to remember that you're not alone in the process. Inspiration can be taken from all sides of the buffet. Balance was obtained by, again and again playing the different scenes, entering the realms, and trying to feel the environments. Realizing that the symbolism of certain set pieces did the job splendidly getting across a feeling or hinting at lore without any additional dialog or text pop-up. As a writer, editing out redundant text is as important as adding text, if not more important! Then, for giving the poetry center stage, I had the hallucinogenic vistas, or visions at my disposal. This could be done without interfering with the flow of gameplay or disturbing the voice of the environment. Letting remote nooks reward the players with a poetic treat and at the same time hint at the abundance of over-arcing lore. I also used the many descriptions of items and fruit for this. Bite-sized confusion is my favorite! Ultros is a mix of multiple ideas, it’s a Metroidvania with time and seed planting mechanics, as well as having a different approach to the skill tree and gaining resources. Like the game, the cast too are an interesting mix of people. How did you approach the writing for the characters? Cahndlerby : We have a quirky and lovable ensemble, so engaging with them should be as rewarding as possible from the outset with the least amount of dialogue strings possible. Making them distinguished through particular words they use, how flowery of a languish they have, long-winded or blunt when getting their mind across to the protagonist – all has to be considered. Gärdner has a mindful way of putting together sentences, Wallet dons a more casual approach, and Qualia can range from space opera to heart-to-heart. In the case of Brunzon, it felt important for me to create alien words and sprinkle them over his dialogue. I wanted to make him feel more distant and add to his detached approach to what was going on with the world outside of his beloved gegga. His native expressions all have meaning, so it was not a case of simply making them sound strange, but to make them fit each situation. Overkill deluxe? Maybe, but oh, how rewarding on the creative side. The diverse cast also look the part too as Ultros has a very bold visual design, its psychedelic style makes it stand out in the genre. Did this have an impact on your writing for the game? Cahndlerby : Most certainly! It helped let go of any hindering poundage, releasing creativity to a higher level. Once you let your foot off the brake, it was just a matter of seeing where you'd end up. Then, rewind to edit for the sake of the whole. It's always better to be loud from the get-go. It's easier to take away than to add when things are scarce. The Design Works series from Lost in Cult are not simply artbooks, but a deep dive into every aspect of a game, including narrative. How long did it take and what was involved for the Ultros team to make the book happen? Cahndlerby : To work with [book author] John Rogers and Lost In Cult has been a great ride! We provided sketches and rough, early takes from all disciplines to let John sort out what he thought would make for an interesting mix. We got interviewed about our different processes, and if he had any additional thoughts or questions, we'd give it another round. Sometimes, things took off to places and stuff we hadn't even thought about putting in there. Because of that, it's hard to say if our involvement is done (as of April 2025) or if more input will come. It's been a bunch of fun insertions here and there over almost a year, counting from the initial interviews. Ultros: Design Works Deluxe Edition That's a long time, but an interview isn't your only contribution to the contents, because the Deluxe Edition of Ultros: Design Works comes with a poetry booklet with your own poems. How does it feel to know that your own personal work is getting a physical release like this? Cahndlerby : Emotional. Delivering a demon proved to be no small task. It seeped through everything about me. Sometimes drowning me. I had written and performed a three-part poetic reading at the A Maze festival in Berlin. It was my deliverance, or so I thought. Getting the opportunity to help shape the book, it felt natural to offer to include it, with the addition of a newly written prologue sprung from where my soul was at this time after the release. I am happy, proud, and sad. I'm sure fans will appreciate the inclusion of the poems, it's certainly a unique extra! What else can people expect from the book and what stood out to you when reading through it? Cahndlerby : Expect details about things you didn't know were a factor in the molding of Ultros. Different voices from different disciplines sometimes contradict each other, much like the Joker's origin story – as it should be. Creating this playable work of art was like falling through parallel layers of lived abstractions. Something that stood out was the length of this journey. The size of bits and pieces spun together to string up the Sarcophagus with its realms and dwellers. We gave so much, our all, for the sake of this demon. Please, receive what love we poured into it. It sounds like fans will have a lot to dive into which is great to hear. Moving on from Ultros, do you have future goals within video game development and if so, what are they? Cahndlerby : Oh, I have places I want to visit, dreams I want to share, games I want to breathe life into, no doubt about it. It's much too early to go into detail on, of course, but the future cradles a promise of hope and existential beauty. If fate is cruel, and I can only choose to create one more game in my career, one game molded from my mind and hands, I have my starting point. My vision is there. We will certainly keep an eye out for what the future holds for you! Your own work will now be included on the shelves of collectors, so I’m curious, what is your book collection like? Does it include video game books and artbooks? Cahndlerby : Right now, my shelves hold a strange blend of vinyl soundtracks, drink & food books themed from games or TV series, and mysterious creatures from the cold North. The most recent art books I have must be from the Persona series. I'm also looking forward to Lost in Cult's VA-11 HALL-A book . I love that game! Thanks again for your time, to end the interview, shamelessly let people know why they should pick up Ultros: Design Works and promote anything else you have going on! Cahndlerby : The book highlights the artistic curiosity and creative madness we suffered from in the best possible way. It might be contagious – hurry and find out! I post some nice poetic bits on my Bluesky account, and updates on my next creative endeavor will also pop up there eventually: @ cahndlerby.bsky.social The same goes for Instagram: instagram.com/cahndlerby Thank you so much for wanting to talk about Ultros, and a big thank you to every sojourner out there who has put time and effort into exploring our demonically colorful creation! A big thanks to Pelle for taking the time to speak to me for the websites very first interview! Ultros: Design works is out later this year and a copy will be joining the collection here too. Remember to visit Lost in Cult and check out the book, as well as others in the series which includes Sable, Citizen Sleeper and the upcoming Outer Wilds. - Flip Through - The Art of Anthem
January 16th 2026 We are going back to 2019 on The Artbook Collector YouTube channel this week, with a look at the online sci-fi shooter Anthem to say goodbye after its servers were shut off January 12th 2026. The Art of Anthem was released by Dark Horse in partnership with the game's developer BioWare in March 2019, shortly after the game was launched on February 22nd, giving players a look at the art behind the new world from the team. 7 years later, the servers were shut off by publisher EA, making the game unplayable. While the game had a short life, art can last many lifetimes and should be seen, so enjoy a preview of the book below. Inside the 208-page hardcover book is a look at the the early ideas for the game, character concepts, Javelin designs, environments, wildlife art, and more. This is all complimented with insights from some of the art team that offer details on the artwork, their approach, and the world of Anthem . It's the usual affair for a video game artbook, but that's not a bad thing as it's a tried and tested formula that delivers a good look at the art team's talent. As you can see, the artwork is incredible throughout, making this appeal to not just players, but fans of sci-fi, mech suits, and stunning environments. Anthem was (as it sadly no longer 'is') an online RPG from BioWare, presented as a third-person shooter in an open world with flight mechanics. In this sci-fi world, the player takes on the role of a Freelancer, people that use Javelin exosuits to traverse and survive the planets dynamic weather, dangerous creatures, other humans, and ancient mysteries. Up to four players could team together to take on the world with gunplay, melee weapons, special attacks, and their acrobatic suits that are capable of flight and rapid movement. The game didn't receive the best reviews and suffered with a lack of end-game content early on, but maintained a dedicated fanbase and improved with post-release updates. On January 12th 2026, the servers were shut down, making the game unplayable as it required an internet connection. Now that it is offline, those with The Art of Anthem on their shelf have not just a book, but a piece of gaming history. The book has sold through its stock, so copies can now only be bought on second hand markets. If you are interested though, the links below can be used to buy a Kindle version of the book. - 'The Art of Marvel Animation’s Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man' Gets A Short Delay
January 16th 2026 The upcoming artbook for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man from Marvel Studios Animation has received a date change, but fortunately it is only a short push back. The Art of Marvel Animation’s Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man appeared online in September and settled on the release date of June 9th. Now though, the hardcover from Abrams Books is set for release on June 16th 2026. The release is still a while away, so date changes like this are not unexpected, but the good news for fans is that it is only a week long delay. There have been a couple of other updates too, with the first being that the page count has increased from 224 to 240, as spotted on Amazon US . This isn't set in stone though, as page counts are the one thing that can change more than the release date, sometime only being updated after the book has been released. The increase is always good news though, so fans may be treated to more art than initially detailed. The unfortunate update is for the price, as the RRP has increased from $45 to $50. Artbooks have been creeping up in price, but thankfully not as much as many other retail and collectible products. The price has not been increased in the UK though, which could indicate that tariffs have played a role in the price rise, but that can only be speculated on. Regardless though, the book can still be pre-ordered for $45 with a discount, something that's not unusual for an artbook. The Art of Marvel Animation’s Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is set to include photos, sketches, storyboards, concept art, animation cels, and more for this new take on Spider-Man. As well as this, interviews with the creative team behind the show will provide insights for those wanting more details too. It will showcase the vintage comic book art style that makes the animation stand out amongst other releases from the studio, perfect for those that enjoyed series. Abrams Books have partnered with Marvel in the past, seemingly becoming the go to publisher of their animated releases, which includes The Art of Marvel Studios’ What If...? from August of 2024 and X-Men ’97: The Art and Making of the Animated Series from July 2025. Check out a preview of the latter below. Future updates on the book will be will be shared here and those wanting to add this book to their collection can do so by pre-ordering the book below. - The Missing Artbooks from Marvel Studios
January 15th 2026 Marvel Studios have a large catalogue of artbooks for their releases, with publications from the very first Iron Man in 2008, to The Fantastic Four: First Steps . The series is now made up of 55 books for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with releases from other publishers available as well, but this could have been even higher. In recent years it has become less likely that some projects will get an artbook, and some went without one many years ago, so lets look back at what they sadly skipped. Skipped - The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special The first time that Marvel Studios themselves completely skipped an artbook (more on Marvel Television shortly) was for their second special, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special . Up until this point, all movies and shows received the artbook treatment, so when the first Marvel Studios Special Presentations release received a book with Marvel Studios' Werewolf by Night: The Art of the Special , it was thought that the next would too. Sadly, it never arrived and the reasons it was skipped are unknown, but a real shame as the Guardians of the Galaxy artbooks prior to this were fantastic. Cancelled - Secret Invasion This was one very odd, because this book was not skipped and was actually listed for release, but ultimately never came to be. As noted in my previous reporting on the book , you could pre-order Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion: The Art of the Series and it was given a release date. At a time when every artbook from Marvel was being delayed multiple times, this one held its ground better than most, but the release date came and went and it simply became unavailable. Eventually it was delisted, confirming its cancellation. Secret Invasion was not well received, but the same could also be said for other projects, so this became another red flag from the studio that let fans know that going forward, not everything in the Multiverse Saga would get an artbook. The lack of official cover art was a sign that something wasn't right, but I also spoke to an artists that worked on the show that said he had not been interviewed for the book, which was unusual. There is some great art online for the Skrulls, and although there may not have been as much interesting concept art for this show due to its setting and genre, it still would have been a welcome addition to the shelf. This was not the first book to be cancelled though, as you will see in this list. Skipped - Echo/ Iron Heart The cancellation of the Secret Invasion artbook showed that Marvel had shifted and was no longer releasing artbooks for all of their Disney+ shows. Although others like Loki: Season Two , Agatha All Along , and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law did get an artbook, Echo didn't get the same love. The show based on Maya Lopez after her introduction in Hawkeye was received well by fans, but no listing ever appeared for an artbook. This was continued with Iron Heart , a show that again didn't even get a listing for a book. Those that have been collecting the Disney+ artbooks I have now have some painful gaps in the series, some of which could have come with great artwork. With three live-action series now without an artbook, the future is looking less bright for upcoming shows. Still Possible - What if...? Season 2 and 3 The Art of Marvel Studios’ What If...? was also an interesting release, as the book was initially cancelled in a similar way to Secret Invasion: The Art of the Series . After appearing online as part of the ongoing series from Marvel Studios, it was delisted, only to appear again in a new format from publisher Abrams Books. This was a first for a Marvel Studios' artbook and it took three years after the season ended for the book to eventually arrive, coming as a hardcover with a dustjacket and therefore not part of the MCU series' matching set. Since then though, there has been no word on the next two seasons of What If...?, and although it has not yet been three years since the second season aired, there's been no hint that it is coming. The first long gap can be excused for the cancellation and a new publisher taking on the project, but the wait for the final seasons to get an artbook is now unusual. They could still be coming though, so watch this space. Skipped - Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Seasons 5-7 Released as part of the same slipcase format as the Infinity Saga movie artbooks, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter received 'Declassified' books that looked at the making of the shows from Marvel Television, that was then a separate division. Inside were character and episode breakdowns, VFX images, and some concept art. While both seasons of Agent Carter did get a slipcase book, Coulson and his team of agents were not so lucky, as the last book was Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season Four Declassified . Possibly due to Marvel Television coming to an end as everything was migrating to Marvel Studios themselves, the last three seasons didn't get a Declassified book, nor did they get a Blu-ray release either. At least we got to see the fantastic artwork for Ghost Rider for the fourth season! Cancelled and Skipped - The Netflix Shows Secret Invasion wasn't the first book to get delisted and cancelled, as it also happened years before. Listings were online for 'Declassified' style books for season one of Netflix's Daredevil and Jessica Jones in 2015. After delays, Marvel's Daredevil: Defender of Hell's Kitchen: Season One and Marvel's A.K.A. Jessica Jones: Season One were eventually removed from retailer websites and no book was ever published for this more adult corner of the universe. Nothing was ever listed for Luke Cage , Iron Fist , The Defenders , or The Punisher either. The only concept art printed was on a spread in Marvel Studios: The Art of Ryan Meinerding that highlighted Daredevils costume, which can be seen below. Artists Jackson Sze did post on social media in April 2025 that an artbook was coming for Daredevil: Born Again , the return of the character now under Marvel Studios, as opposed to the old Marvel Television division. Sadly though, no listing has been revealed since and could be a sign that is is now not getting one. Fingers crossed that Daredevil is finally getting a dedicated artbook in the near future and it's just taking longer than expected! Skipped - I Am Groot Although you could argue that I Am Groot doesn't need an artbook as it was made up of episodes that were under 10 minutes long, it is also visually more unique than other shows on this list and likely has some fun concept art hidden away for it. A full 224-page hardcover like the others may be a bit much for the misadventures of Baby Groot, but a combination book with The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special would have been a great way to showcase some of the work behind its creation. Who doesn't want more from Baby Groot after all?! Cancelled - The Incredible Hulk The first cancellation was for The Art of The Incredible Hulk , which would have been the second ever release for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Originally scheduled to hit shelves in November 2008, the book didn't get a release at all. This could have fallen through due to the fact that Marvel didn't have the rights to the solo film, which was handled by Universal at the time. Artbooks for the Spider-Man movies that are owned by Sony did arrive though, but at that point Disney had bought Marvel, whereas in 2008 the MCU was under Paramount Pictures. We will never know the reason and can only speculate, but IP rights and contracts can be messy and so possibly the reason. Unlikely - Marvel Zombies/ Eyes of Wakanda Likely to suffer the same fate as I Am Groot , these miniseries have no upcoming releases set to showcase the art behind them. I don't think that they will get a printed showcase, but I would like to see a combination book with each other, or even with What If...? , as they are all made under Marvel Studios Animation. It is worth noting that it if they do come to fruition, they would almost certainly come from publisher Abrams Books and not part of Marvel's own ongoing series. The reason for this is that they seem to be handling all of the animation artbooks. This includes the previously mentioned What If...? title, but also X-Men ’97: The Art and Making of the Animated Series and the upcoming book, The Art of Marvel Animation’s Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man . Future Releases? At the time of writing this, Wonder Man is just around the corner for a release on Disney+, but based on Echo and Iron Heart not getting the 'Art of' treatment, this will likely be missed too. As mentioned, Daredevil: Born Again has not appeared either, so there's a chance the TV side of MCU could go without artbooks. The upcoming Punisher special and VisionQuest series will likely lack a release too. I am expecting the Daredevil book, although I can see it coming later and covering multiple seasons. What we can count on though, is the movies. No doubt we will be getting what will be titled 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day - The Art of the Movie' and 'Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday - The Art of the Movie' , it's just a matter of when, because based on previous time gaps, they could arrive in 2027. Anything else is a roll of the dice as it currently stands and between format changes, odd pricing choices, and books being cancelled and moved around, it is clear that things behind-the-scenes aren't what they once were. It will be interesting to see what Marvel add to their almost 20 year old series in the coming years! If any future artbooks are announced, they will be reported here and added to the collection too, so you can get previews and a review when they arrive. Be sure to check out the Reviews page to find some of their most recent releases. Also check out Titan Books' ongoing re-releases of the Infinity Saga artbooks, each coming with all of the original content in a resized matching set.
