- The DC Art of Jorge Jiménez Successfully Funded
April 7th 2025 Clover Press has found more success on Kickstarter with their first artbook for DC Comics, The DC Art of Jorge Jiménez . This is fantastic news for all involved, as it was quickly funded and now confirmed to go into production. 'The Marvel Art of' series from Clover Press has already received a lot of support, with multiple books funded and released through the crowdfunding website, so there was little surprise this would reach its goal too. Jorge Jiménez is also a very popular comic book artist, having worked on some of DC's biggest characters, including Batman and Superman, making him a perfect choice to start this new line of artbooks. The campaign goal was $10,000, which has been surpassed by a huge margin, the amount pledged at the time of writing this comes in at over $250,000. More than 1,500 people have backed the project, with likely more to do so before it ends on April 25th. You can visit the page for the book here - Campaign Page . Cover art for The DC Art of Jorge Jiménez In my earlier article before the campaign went live, there was no details on pricing and tiers, but these are all now available for people wanting to pledge for a copy. Fans can donate to receive the book for $75/£59, with more expensive tiers available with additional extras too. These higher tiers include a dustcover, a slipcase, collectible cards, a sketchbook, signed copies, prints and more. If you have backed the previous projects from Clover Press for their Marvel books, this will all very familiar to you. More 'The DC Art of' books are to be expected after this great start, much like the Marvel artbook run. This also continues to highlight the fan support for comic book artists and their want for dedicated artbooks, which is great for Clover Press, who have proven again that they can help make them a reality. Their releases are also high quality too, helping to secure future support from previous backers. Jorge Jiménez has worked at DC Comics for over a decade and this puts together highlights of his page art, cover art, concepts and more. It will feature over 200 pages of his work for fans to pore over, so this presents a great opportunity for people to add more Jiménez to their collection in a hardcover book. If you are interested in The DC Art of Jorge Jiménez, make sure you visit the Kickstarter page before the campaign ends on April 25th here. - Book Review: The Art of Dead Space (2023)
January 22nd 2025 Dead Space made its mark on the survival horror genre back in 2008, introducing us the Isaac Clarke and the Necromorphs. After 2 sequels and an artbook for that trilogy, Motive Studio released a remake of the original game 15 years later. Now, they also have an artbook of their own. The Art of Dead Space was announced in 2024 by Dark Horse and after a couple of delays, it is finally here with a release of January 28th 2025. I was curious to see what this would include, as the previous book of the same name, The Art of Dead Space, was full of early art for the original trilogy. This also being a remake means that a lot of the initial designs have already been done, so would this be a display of old art, a mix or just new art? I’ll go over this below, as well as giving my impressions of the book as a whole. Build Quality Dark Horse deliver another well built book, which is never surprising given how many they make. It’s the same standard size as the majority of their releases (24cm x 30.6cm), so if you own any of their books you know what to expect. It’s a hardcover, with reliable binding and over 200 pages of art. The print quality is also good, which is important here as it features predominantly dark colours. It would be a huge issue of it was difficult to see the details of the artwork, so this is an early win for the book. Content Onto content and there’s a lot to enjoy here. I don’t review the art itself, I’m not in a position to do so. I can say though, that I am a huge fan of the visual design, from the suit and weapons, to the enemies and Ishimura, so it is great to have more art for the series in my collection. You can decide yourself if you like the art, but if you’ve read this far I’m sure you do. The focus of the book is what they added and changed from the original, don’t expect to find early art for the 2008 release here. Its intent is clear, which is to showcase the work of the art team and how they added and improved upon what they loved from the original. I think they did this very well too, they constantly refer and compare to the original release and still showcase the talent of their own team throughout. This book, by its nature of being based on a remake, includes a lot more screenshots and 3D models than you get in most. It does a nice job with them for the most part. It has some sections with side by sides to the original, that show just how much things have been improved, as well as with some of the weapons and suits too, which I liked. The only place I thought it was a little too much was in the character section, where each one is shown as 3D models compared to the original. While these are impressive models, I wanted a little more from this section. An example can be seen below. I was concerned initially that there was too many screenshots as I had a quick flip through, but when sat with the book to read it, I realised that a lot of the environment art is so detailed, that skimming though, they could be mistaken for screenshots. The art for environments, which takes up the largest portion of the book, is superb and look like close to, if not, final designs. In the environment section are also designs for the wall art. Like in the game where they are found throughout the Ishimura, they are found across the book too, rather than in an isolated section. It breaks up the dark colours of the pages and art, so I like this choice. My favourite section was for the suits as it’s a lot of new art. They highlight the changes made, as well as what wasn’t used, which I always like seeing in an artbook. The weapons also got similar treatment, with art, renders and comparisons for the remake. The Necromorphs have a chapter too, with some highlighting the changes made and others with art simply showing the new designs. I'm sure fans old and new will enjoy this part, the Necromorphs will always stand the the test of time with their grotesque visuals. There isn’t a huge amount of text for this book, but it gives enough in places to let you know the thoughts behind the art and changes. It’s a good balance to me of giving information and insights, without being either too generic or being too much. While this book may not be for people that want early sketches and concepts, it does showcase the approach to creating a remake and the art and flexibility that goes into that. Credits The artists are not credited on each page and so it's not possible to know who is responsible for which piece of art, but as you can see below, they do get a dedicated page at the back of the book. I always like to see them noted throughout, but they do get some page space. Use of Space The book does a nice job with its use of layouts, it’s not overcrowded or messy and it doesn’t waste space either. It includes a variety of image sizes, included double page spreads, but nothing is lost in the centre fold, which is an issue I find in a lot of artbooks. I’m very happy with the design of the book and how it showcases the art. Value As this is a Dark Horse book, you know what to expect with price and that’s not a bad thing. It retails at £45/ $50 which is normal, but you can already find it a little lower online at the time of writing this (just before release). I would be happy to pay £30-£40 as a fan of both Dead Space and also Dark Horse artbooks. Verdict Overall, this is a great book for fans of Dead Space and a nice showcase for the work of the art team at Motive. If like me, you have played the original, especially if you own the original artbook too, this makes for a nice edition to your collection. If you’re a new fan of Dead Space or want to see the early designs for the series, you won’t find that here. Think of this artbook in the same way as the game, it has taken what was done by the original team at Visceral and updated it, rather than start from nothing all over again. I hope Dead Space makes a return and brings with it another artbook! - Flip Through: The Art of Ice Age
April 4th 2025 A new flip through is available on The Artbook Collector YouTube channel, The Art of Ice Age ! This week jump into the classic animation series of movies and shorts in this release from Titan Books. It hit shelves in 2016, ahead of the release of Ice Age: Collision Course, which was the 5th movie in the franchise. Unfortunately the book is now out of print, so while videos are intended as previews only, this one offers a look at what's inside, now that it is becoming more rare. It is full of incredible art from the sadly closed Blue Sky Studios, which always produced visually impressive concept art, designs and of course, movies. For many of us, Ice Age was a big part of our childhood, so seeing the early art for Scrat, Sid, Manny, Diego and the rest of the characters is a treat. There are also beautiful pieces of art of the settings and key moments too. Good new though, there is another movie coming in 2026, so perhaps there will be another artbook coming our way as well. The 6th feature is being produced by 20th Century Animation, that are now a part of Disney, who have been very reliable at releasing artbooks for their own animations, as well as Pixar. This could mean that fans who missed out on this book may get another chance to add some Ice Age to their collection next year. Check out the video below and subscribe to see weekly flip throughs of new artbooks, old gems and rare favourites! - Kickstarter: Frostpunk Artbook and Anthology Project is a Huge Success
April 2nd 2025 The city building survival game, Frostpunk 2 has been a hit since its release in September of 2024. Now the developer, 11 bit studios, has found more success with a Kickstarter campaign for their artbook and anthology book set. The Kickstarter project , titled The World of Frostpunk: Artbook and Anthology, launched on March 20th and was fully funded in just 8 minutes, an incredible result for the studio. At the time of writing this, it has received over 800% of the funding needed, coming in at €349k, so the books are definitely coming now for the fans eager to get more from the world of Frostpunk. Few details were known about the what would be on offer in my earlier reporting before the campaign started, but the pledge options are now detailed on the page. The focus remains on the two books, with the first being the artbook, Aesthetics of Desolation, described as a 'visual story of the Frostpunk world coming together'. The second book, Tales from the Frostland, will feature 4 stories from Polish authors set in its world. The options available allow fans to pledge for digital versions of both books, receive a physical copy of either one with both as digital copies, or buy the two together in a slipcase, again with digital versions included. Those fortunate enough to have some extra money to spend can also add a swag box, which comes with more extras including a calendar, patches, key ring, notebook, pins and a thermal cup. Those that ordered a physical book also receive the stretch goal upgrades, which at the current funding level now means you now get textile edging, hot stamping and golden edging on the books, with postcards, bookmarks and a digital background also included. The next stretch goal will upgrade the paper when the funding reaches €355k. This is a unique collection, offering both an artbook and story book together is not something you find in the artbook world. You can often find 'The Art and Making of' books, but this new approach has proven to be very popular. The option to buy one or both books is also a good move, as it allows people to invest in to what speaks to them, while still being able to experience both as digital copies. There may be people that opt in for the anthology book, but find that they enjoy the digital artbook as well, opening them up to a new lane of books to also add to their collection going forward. I'm sure the people at both 11 bit studios and those contributing to the books are very happy with the response and support. It also highlights how crowdfunded artbooks can be extremely successful, creating a viable way for developers and artists to get their work out to people in book form. The Artbook Collector collection will be welcoming a physical copy of the artbook as well, so expect previews and a review in January when they are expected to ship! If you want to check out the Kickstarter, give it a visit here and you can make a pledge until the campaign ends on April 18th - The World of Frostpunk: Artbook and Anthology . Those wanting even more from the world of Frostpunk can also back a separate project, Frostpunk: The Roleplaying Game. This is a table top game from Catalyst Games in partnership with 11 bit studios, find it here. Tags; #Kickstarter #11bitstudios #FrostPunk #FrostPunk2

- Book Review: The Art of Destiny: Volume 3
April 1st 2025 Destiny 2 has been out for some time now and has had a lot of changes, including more content and expansions. After many years of the team at Bungie working away on the game, they are back with another artbook to showcase the talent of the artists involved. The Art of Destiny: Volume 3 comes with the concept art for the game where Volume 2 left off in 2017, putting the added content in the spotlight. With a publication date of April 15th 2025, it’s been a good while since we have had another look at printed works for Destiny. It is again published by Insight Editions or Titan Books, depending on where you are located. My copy here in the UK came from Titan Books which arrived early, so I can jump in and present my thoughts of the artbook here. As always my reviews cover the following points that I feel are important to fans and collectors; build quality, content, credits, use of space and value. Photos and a video preview are also featured below. Build Quality Like the previous entries, Volume 3 comes with a hardcover and dust jacket, as is the standard for Titan Books. As always it delivers solid binding, which it needs, because it has 272 pages and is a good size again too at 11 x 10 inches (27.8 x 25.4 cm). It also has a high print quality, so none of the details are ruined by dark or unclear images. Content As previously stated, this gives players a look at the additional content for the game, starting with Curse of Osiris and ending with The Final Shape. Chapters are divided up into expansions, with a look at the art that helped create them. The book features concept art for characters, weapons, armour, environments and enemies for each expansion. There is a look at the seasonal content included too, as well as some storyboards, iconography and narrative art. There are different styles featured from the team, such as the storyboards/ narrative concept art, which use less fine detail and brighter colours to convey moments in the storytelling. The art included is from various stages of development, from early and unused designs, to the more developed ideas and key art as well, with some images covering an entire spread. If you’re a fan of previous artbooks from Bungie, whether that be for Halo or Destiny, you know what you’re getting with the art, but that’s not a bad thing. I’m personally a fan of their work, particularly the environment pieces, and I was not disappointed here. The Europa concepts for Beyond Light in particular were a highlight for me. Though I don’t review the art itself, as it is subjective, I can say that Bungie delivered as they always do, so there is no disappointment for players here that enjoyed their previous releases. People that are picking this up as their first book from Bungie get a nice look at the range of work the team does. There are insights placed throughout The Art of Destiny: Volume 3 as well. It’s not a deep dive into the making of the game, but there are instead small paragraphs of information that can be about the intention of the art, a description of a piece or some information with mentions of lore. Not every image gets one, but they can be found on most pages. They are short and concise, with some giving fans more interesting information than others, such as highlighting that the Cloudstriders from Lightfall were worked on with the potential of them having their own franchise. The last expansion chapter for The Final Shape gets slightly more detail in the way of insights, this may be as a result of its recency, where it is easier for the team to find and remember the details. Overall I think the text does a good job of giving small snippets of information and was used where needed, as opposed to being on every page for the sake of being there. I do wish there was more though, they gave up some of the goods, but there is no doubt a lot more to say about the art. Credits Unfortunately for this book, the credits are not on each page, nor are the artists given page space at the front of back with a list of just their names. Instead, they opted to place the game credits at the back of the book in very small text. The names are separated by company and department, so even the individual roles are not given. This is a shame as the artists do fantastic work, so it would be nice to see who was responsible for each image. Giving the artists their own credit space would also allow people to look them up online. It’s much less likely they will be discovered through a block paragraph of names under the title ‘Art’. Though there is a large number of people noted here, there are better ways of doing this, as seen in other books. Use of Space This book has a vey clean look, it’s well laid out and easy to read. The big problem here though is the sizing of the art and text. The margin size used around the edges of many pages are much bigger than necessary and that gives less space for the content, as it limits the print size. There are some gaps in pages too that could be used as space for more text, or again, larger images if they made adjustments. There is a definitely an aesthetic they were going for here, but the amount of white space around the edges could have been used to allow the art to breathe more. There are pages though that do a much better job, with art reaching the page edge and very little empty space. It’s an odd inconsistency, but a lot of artwork is still included. The layouts are simple and effective, so nothing distracts you from the art. There are no issues with images overlapping or an overdesign background steal attention. Sometimes less is more and that is the case here. Value The RRP is £40/ $50, which is a standard price for an artbook and so there are no issues here. Of course, artbooks can often be found at lower prices, as is already the case in the UK. As seen on Amazon, where I compare prices for consistency, it is currently 8% off. In the US though, it is still at $49.99, but will unlikely stay that way. For 272 pages of art, I don’t see any issue with the pricing for fans and collectors. Verdict The Art of Destiny: Volume 3 delivers more stunning sci-fi art from the team at Bungie, giving players of Destiny 2 a look at the years of work that helped keep the FPS popular. Though there could be improvements with the use of space, there is still a lot of content here that comes as a great follow up to Volume 2. These books together paint the full picture of the Destiny 2, with concept art of the base game from 2017, to The Final Shape launch 7 years later. Even those that haven't played the game can enjoy the book for it's incredible art and design. - Updated: The Art of Jusant Release Date Pushed
March 25th 2025 *Update March 27th 2025 I have received an update on the The Art of Jusant from author Marine Macq, who is working on the book, and it's good news for fans. The reason for the delay is that there is more content being included than previously planned. It is now expected in April with an additional 50 pages, bringing the total to 350 pages of art and insights for the game. The text is printed in both English and French, which also required more time to translate. Delays happen a lot, but it is nice that this is not only a short delay, but one that adds more to the book for those wanting a deep dive into Jusant. Original story below. Today I was expecting to be posting about the release of The Art of Jusant - The Great Expedition , however, the launch has been delayed. The book is being published by French company Pix'n Love and was due for release today, March 25th 2025. The book is sold on their website , which has updated the release date, now listing it as Q2 2025. Book cover for The Art of Jusant - The Great Expedition I've not been able to find a date for when this change happened, though I do know it was recent, having visited the website not long ago. With no new specific date given either, it seems like this is an unexpected issue that may be ongoing. Artbooks gets delayed often, but usually not this close to launch. I have reached out to the author of the book and will add an update this article should I get a response about why this has happened. The book is set to come with 300 pages that will feature more than 500 pieces of art for Jusant, from early sketches to final designs. It will also include insights from the developers written in both English and French. Their previous book was The Art of Dordogne from UMANIMATION, a studio that was sadly closed recently. Both books were written by and created with author Marine Macq. Jusant, the game this is based on, was released by Don't Nod in 2023 and follows a wanderer and his strange companion. It's a puzzle and platformer with a focus on climbing that has the player scaling a large tower and its surroundings. Future updates for the book will be reported here, including news on the release date. Tags; Based On: #Jusant Publisher: #PixNLove Studio: #DontNod
- The Art of Death Stranding 2: On The Beach Announced
March 24th 2025 A new artbook has been officially announced by Kojima Productions for the upcoming game, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach Back in partnership with Titan Books, The Art of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was revealed earlier today by the official X account of Kojima Productions. The book is set to come this fall, not long after the game, which launches June 24th on PS5. This is a short wait by today's standards, which has many artbook coming 6 months to many years after a game release. Little else is known about the book as there are no listings at the time of writing this to pull information from. However, if the previous book from Titan Books, The Art of Death Stranding , is anything to go by, expect lots of great art for the characters, environments, enemies, vehicles and more for the game. You can check out a video preview of that book below, which is still available to purchase. When more information is revealed about the book, it will be reported here and it will no doubt be joining the collection here too for previews and a review. - Book Review: The Art of Assassin's Creed Shadows
March 25th 2025 Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the latest release from Ubisoft in the long-running game series that has players taking the roles of different characters across a variety of historical settings. This time round, players take control of two protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke, in 16th Century Japan, a long requested setting by fans. There is more than just a new game for players to dive into though, there is an artbook too, The Art of Assassin’s Creed Shadows . It was no surprise to find out this book was coming, Ubisoft have released many Assassin’s Creed artbooks, with this one also coming from Dark Horse, the publisher responsible for last three as well. The book also comes just days after the game launched, which has become uncommon in the last few years. Now that the game is out, fans can dive into the art that helped make it happen. This review is based on these 5 points; build quality, content, credits, use of space and value. You will get my thoughts on each and you can see previews below, including a video. Build Quality Dark Horse are a very reliable publisher and no stranger to artbooks for video games, so you’re in good hands here. As always, this is a hardcover that comes in at their standard size of 9 x 12 inches (23.52 x 31.29 cm). I have no concerns with the binding and the print quality is fantastic too. If you collect artbooks, you likely have at least one of their books on your shelf, so you know what to expect and that’s not a bad thing. Content The book comes with 256 pages and covers a lot. Fans of the game will be able to spend a lot of time delving into the art and insights here. I’ll keep it more brief as there is a lot I could talk about, but that speaks to not only the amount of work needed to produce a large scale RPG as they show here, but their long history of releasing artbooks and making them enticing to players. The book is split up in typical fashion, with the protagonists, environments, characters, wildlife and more getting their own sections. The art that is showcased is from various stages of production too, which I always like. Content includes detailed environments, unused character costumes, ink sketches, black and white art and a lot of ‘narrative’ pieces too. There is a great mix here that helps highlight what was involved in creating the game. The two protagonists get a nice section at the start, providing a look at their concepts with more focus on the costumes, but some pages for the weapons too. The art gives you a good look at the details of their designs, with some superb artwork in settings too. Other characters are showcased later on, but unfortunately they get just one image each for the most part and without a look at early or alternative designs. It’s not ideal, but given the amount of art included in this book, you can’t have space for everything. Often with Assassin’s Creed artbooks, my favourite sections are the environments. The art teams not only create incredible art, but a window into other cultures, as well as the past. This book is no different and it is the largest chapter. There is a lot of detail in many of pieces, with some ink sketches and black and white art mixed in too. Much of the art is more than just the settings, they depict moments and the life of people in them. It is mentioned that they wanted to create narrative-based concept art for the design team, and it makes them more dynamic. This chapter also includes a look at the building designs, textures and more, giving a deeper look at the development of the visuals. This again is my personal highlight of this entry in the artbook series. There is also a ‘Narrative’ chapter too, which as well as including the other characters, also has concept art for key moments in the story. This shines a light on how the artists capture the feel and mood of a scene to guide the final result. There are also pages for storyboards, UI and key art, so you can see more of what is required from the team. What I really like about this book, is that on top of the range of art, the insights are also thoughtful. They did a brilliant job of giving lots of information to the reader without filling the pages with text. It uses the opportunity to not just comment on the art, but also give historical information too, such as the names of weapons, what buildings would have been used for, traditions and brilliant mini pieces of history trivia for locations and scenes. There are also notes from the team about intentions and what was needed from the concepts too. It strikes a nice balance and is very engaging. When I saw the small paragraphs on the pages, I was worried it would be vague and generic information, as found in other books. Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised by the efficiency of being insightful without needing long paragraphs, allowing more page space to be free for the art. This is also helpful for some text placement, as it can be on top of the artwork, but as it is small and concise, it doesn’t distract or ruin the images when placed in the corner of a larger piece. The only downside with the text is what is used for the other characters, as it only has descriptions of who they are, rather than the deeper insights featured for the main protagonists and other parts of the book. Credits The Art of Assassin’s Creed Shadows has done a great job with this, which has not always been the case for the series. It credits the artists on each page and lists them all in the back of the book too. You can’t ask for much more than this, so this part of the review is short and sweet. Use of Space As you can see in the previews, the pages are full and the images are good sizes too. Maybe it’s from experience of making these books, but they did an excellent job working with the page designer. The layouts change constantly, they are very readable and the text placement isn’t distracting either. A lot of the text is in a smaller front size than is seen in many books and I think this was a great decision. What I find very impressive though, is the use of art crossing the centre fold. This can spell disaster for many artbooks, as parts of an image can be lost this way and can ruin them. There are instances where this happens, but very few times and it’s very minimal, which given how often the art does cross the fold, is noteworthy. Perhaps they have worked out a way to adjust their printing to accommodate for losing sections of artwork this way. Whatever they did, I hope they pass the knowledge on to others. Value As is the standard for a Dark Horse artbook, the full retail price is $50/ £45. I have no issue with this as books can often be found below this price. I always go to Amazon for prices, so that reviews can stay consistent when checking for current reductions and availability. Right now, this book is already over 30% off in the US and over 25% off in the UK, but of course this is subject to change. At a price like this, you have a great deal, there is a lot included and Dark Horse deliver solid books. Even if the price drop was lower than this, I would happily recommend it to players wanting more from Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Verdict The Art of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a great way to enjoy the talent of the artists at the studio. The variety of content, organisation, print quality and volume gives fans a great way to get lost in the art. The use of both historical and artistic insights gives the book even more value as well. With only a couple of minor setbacks, this is an artbook that continues the strong line of releases for the series. It’s easy to recommend and benefits from coming shortly after the launch of the game too, so I hope people pick this one up. Though I don't review art as it is subjective, I continue to be blown away by what is created for Assassin’s Creed. For me personally, I’m happy the book successfully gives the art the showcase it deserves. - The Art of Star Wars: The High Republic: Volume II Now Coming in July
March 24th 2025 Fans of The High Republic will have to wait a little longer to get their hands on this upcoming artbook from Abrams Books, The Art of Star Wars: The High Republic: Volume II . It has been hit with a delay and has slipped from its release date in June. When this delay happened is unknown, as it was only picked up by chance when checking listings on retailer websites. The book was previously due for release on June 17th, but is now set to hit shelves July 3rd 2025. Cover art for The Art of Star Wars: The High Republic: Volume II If you have read reports here on delays previously, you'll be aware that they are not publicly acknowledged. This means it is not known why they happen, but they are unfortunately very common for artbooks. This is at least the third delay for the book, having previously been given publication dates of April 29th, May 13th and June 17th as previously mentioned. The book is set to cover art for phases II and III of the crossover event from Lucas Publishing. This includes comics, novels and books. Like the previous volume, it will feature concept art for characters, locations, wildlife, ships and more from The High Republic. - Book Review: The Art of Marvel SNAP
March 24th 2025 Marvel Snap has now received the artbook treatment from Dark Horse after its release on mobile and Windows in 2022. For those unaware, it is a digital card game from Second Dinner that has players facing off against bots and each other, using Marvel characters from across the multi-verse. It remains very popular and more cards are still being added. The Art of Marvel SNAP was released on March 18th 2025 and showcases the art for over 100 of the characters and locations featured in the game, with more than 300 illustrations shown across its 224 pages. I’ll go through my thoughts on the book based on the usual 5 points for a book review; build quality, content, credits, use of space and value. You can find photos and a video preview below as well. Build Quality This is another book from Dark Horse, publisher of many video game artbooks, so it’s no surprise that this is another solid release. It comes in at their standard size of 9 x 12 inches (23.52 x 31.29 cm) and with a hardcover as expected. The pages are of good quality and the binding is strong as always too. What's more unique with this book is the reflective cover art, which is reminiscent of a shiny card, commonly found in many collectible card games. Marvel SNAP has its own version of this with ‘Infinity Splits’, making it a nice touch. Content This book does exactly what it says on the tin and nothing more. It’s described as featuring over 300 pieces of art with insights from Second Dinner. Book descriptions don’t always include everything inside as artbooks can contain a big mix of content, but that is not the case here. Think of this as ‘The Art in Marvel SNAP’, rather than the concepts and developmental art found in most ‘Art of’ books. The Art of Marvel SNAP is split into 3 chapters; Heroes, Villains and Locations. In the hero and villain chapters you get one spread per character, with one large piece of art and 4 - 7 smaller variants. It highlights the card art from different artists for each one, with a nice mix of styles that makes for a fun look at some well-known heroes and villains. I really like the art they chose for the characters, the diversity is appreciated and it makes for a more interesting book. The pieces found here can go from pixel art to much more realistic styles, with everything in between. A lot of the art would fit right at home in a modern comic book, but Second Dinner also reaches outside of this aesthetic, so it offers fans an introduction to very different artists, as well as new takes on familiar faces in the Marvel universe. The chapter with locations is lacking though, as it only provides a single illustration for each one. It would have been nice to see some more here, even if it was a couple of images. It’s the last chapter which is a disappointing way to end the book, because while I do like the art they included, it just isn’t anywhere near as engaging as the previous chapters. If you are after early art, concepts, breakdowns or sketches, you won’t find that here. This is an illustration showcase, giving fans a printed gallery of artwork from the talented people involved. While it would have been compelling to see early iterations for select pieces, Second Dinner has opted to go the route of creating an illustration book, worth pointing out for those wanting something different. The text is unfortunately lacklustre and doesn’t provide the deep insights I was hoping for, despite being well written. It is used for a brief description of the character or location and sometimes references art seen on the page. It includes a quote every now and again as well, but overall, it's all too brief. I would have liked to have read more about the behind-the-scenes of working with the artists, or thoughts and ideas from the artists themselves. There isn’t a huge amount of space for the text though, so it would have been difficult to get a deep dive regardless of how it was approached. Credits The Art of Marvel SNAP does a great job at crediting the artists as you would expect in a book like this. Fans of comic books and art in general may recognise names featured here too. Some artists are featured heavily throughout, such as Ryan Kinnaird, Dan Hipp, Eduardo Mello and Pandart Studio. Others less so, but it is good that they are not only featured, but credited at the bottom of each image, which is the best way to do it. Use of Space This book does a great job of filling the space on each page, while also allowing the art to breathe. The image sizes are also very good, allowing readers to see all the details, helped with the high print quality you expect from an artbook. As mentioned before, it would have been nice to get more art for the locations, perhaps a change in design could have allowed this. I do think they should have used multiple layouts as the pages are all set up in the same way. Even if it was a simple as moving featured character art to either of the edges and having the smaller variants moved to the centre, then rotating the layouts throughout. The images for the characters are all in portrait, as seen on the cards in the game, which makes big changes hard, but when every spread is the same it becomes less interesting than it potentially could be. Value Like previous artbooks from Dark Horse, the full retail price is $50/ £45. For an artbook, this is a standard price so there is no sticker shock here. I use Amazon for price checking to stay consistent and, at the time of writing this, the book is already over 30% off in the UK and 6% off in the US. I recommend checking Amazon for discounts or looking elsewhere to find the best deal. For this book specifically, the RRP is too high for me, so I would definitely recommend finding it on offer. The current UK price at just over £30 is something I would be more comfortable recommending, even to a big fan of the game, based on the content you are getting here. Verdict The Art of Marvel SNAP is a great book for showcasing some of the artists involved with the game, with over 300 pieces of art displayed superbly in a quality hardcover. This book is ideal for players that want to sit and enjoy some developer-selected card art, Marvel art collectors or people that would like some varied references. The book has also given me more artists to look up and follow online, which is never a bad thing! However, if you are wanting more than just the finished pieces or looking for deeper insights into the game and the art itself, you’ll be left disappointed. There isn't a lot of behind-the-scenes commentary, the layouts are repetitive and the location pages feel lacking compared to those for heroes and villains. As much as I like the art, I feel like they could have done a little more here. Though it delivers on what it said it would, there are things they can do within that scope to offer more and create an improved time with the book. February 24th 2025 Overflow: The Art of Bryce Kho was successfully backed on Kickstarter very shortly after launching, but it's not too late to back the campaign. After the launch of Sea of Stars: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho last year , 3dtotal Publishing are partnering with Bryce Kho again to release the new book. This time it will feature his personal work, including studies, sketches, a couple of tutorials and insights into Bryce and his process. The crowdfunding project launched on January 28th through Kickstarter and has only 3 days left. You can find the Kickstarter page here. The book needed £20,000 to be greenlit, but now has over £100,000 pledged to make it happen. Original prints and signed copies have now sold out, only further highlighting the want for artwork from Bryce. The standard copy is still available however and is expected to be shipped in February 2026. The campaign also had stretch goals, some of which have since been unlocked, so people that order a copy through the Kickstarter will also receive 2 bookmarks, 2 post cards, a sticker sheet and a pull out print. This gives fans more reasons to back the project in the last few days. As previously reported, you can also pick yourself up a new companion artbook for the upcoming Sea of Stars DLC, Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker - The Concept Art of Bryce Kho . This comes with 64 pages of new art for the game and can be ordered separately or at an additional cost when backing the project, listed at £15. You can find the full details on the previous article here - More Sea of Stars Art is Coming for Backers of Bryce Kho Book . There are also pins and a print listed as add-ons too, for those interested. I'm a newer fan of Bryce Kho after getting the artbook for Sea of Stars, which you can preview in the video above. I love his style and have high hopes for this book, not only because of his work, but the Sea of Stars: The Concept Art of Bryce Kho presentation and quality overall was outstanding. Check out my review and you'll get an idea of why this upcoming book is worth highlighting, found here . Fans of Bryce have a great opportunity to order a copy of the book with some additional goodies. If you are unable to order now, it will be available later through 3dtotal on their website. You can expect previews and a review here when it is released.
