Thunderbolts saw the unlikely team-up of antiheroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with fan favourites getting their time to shine on the big screen, including the introduction of another in Bob. As expected, Marvel Studios' are publishing an artbook for the movie, highlighting concept art for characters, locations, weapons and key frames. Previews are now available online, giving a peak at what readers can expect in Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts: The Art of the Movie.

The 224-page book will come in a slipcase with 5 prints and is due for release on September 9th, with the below previews found on its Amazon page, where it can pre-ordered. This is new for Marvel, who also did this recently with Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps - The Art of the Movie, making this potentially a new habit for the publisher to help entice people into buying a copy.

The Amazon page now has 4 previews, one is a full piece of the team and is an old image, used as part of the reveal and early teasing of the movie, potentially being featured on an early page in the book. This is indicated by the lack of an artist credit or page design, so could be a simple full piece in the initial pages. The below 3 previews are more interesting though, as they feature artwork, designed layouts and insights too, giving us a real idea of what the pages will look like.

First up is a look at a single page for Yelena Belova, notably just a single side of a spread, as opposed to the previews of The Fantastic Four artbook. With the movie focused on multiple characters, the book will likely have a heavy focus on art for their look and costumes, as seen here with art from Wesley Burt. The commentary dives into the approach to the character design, including being more grounded and having a connection to her past appearances.

The next page preview is a look at the suit of Sentry from artist John Staub. Variations of this costume have been circulating online, with 7 shown on this page alone of the character. His debut in the movie was a big talking point, as people were curious how they would depict such a powerful character, which went on to become a highlight of Thunderbolts. Explorations of the suit was likely a long process with lots of designs created, so it's no surprise that it's featured in the artbook.

Finally, we get a look at the veteran of both the MCU and the new team, Bucky Barnes. With more art from Wesley Burt, it explores his look, from combat ready to much more casual attire. The two pieces on the right are almost certainly callbacks to his earlier look as The Winter Soldier with a similar style mask. Based on the the fact one includes a helmet, this page would likely be art for his scene catching up with Yelena and the others on his motorbike.

As a reviewer of artbooks, this is all looking good and business and usual for the studios' releases. Clean layouts, credits on the page and no wasted space. I like the first preview with Yelena especially, having her pose break out of the trimmed background makes it a little more dynamic.

My only concern is the text as it has a variety in line weight in the font that doesn't look great in the preview. This was a criticism in my review of Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World - The Art of the Movie, as on some backgrounds it becomes less clear. Hopefully this time round it is less of an issue and doesn't hold back its presentation.

Marvel Studios' have been very consistent with their artbook releases, going back to 2008 with the original Iron Man. With the exception of The Incredible Hulk, all of the movies have received a look at the concepts in an artbook, along with most of the series too. Titan Books are also rereleasing the Infinity Saga books too, allowing those that missed out to add them to their shelf.

Notable projects that haven't had an artbook include Secret Invasion, which had it's book quietly cancelled, Echo, I Am Groot, and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Still to come are artbooks for The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Daredevil: Born Again, which was confirmed on social media. No confirmation yet on artbooks for Ironheart, Eyes of Wakanda, the second and third seasons of What If..?, or other future projects. Artbooks for Avengers: Doomsday, Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Secret Wars are safe bets though.
