No stranger to sharing a look at the art in details behind their animated movies, Studio Ghibli are back with a deep dive into their worlds and the ecology in a new release from Titan Books. Ghibli have created unique places and wildlife for decades, and in 2027 fans will be able to get more insights into them in The Environmental Philosophy Behind Ghibli.

The Environmental Philosophy Behind Ghibli
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Discovered through a new listing on the website of Titan Books, the 304-page hardcover is an illustrated dive into the designs and ecosystems, revisiting the movies and how these environmental themes play a huge part in their success. It is set to arrive on April 20th, 2027 with a recommended retail price of $44.99 in the US and £29.99 in the UK. There is no cover art for the book currently and more retail listings are expected to begin appearing soon.

The official description is as follows;

"This richly illustrated volume explores the profound ecological and spiritual themes woven into the films of Studio Ghibli. From Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind to Princess Mononoke, it examines how the studio’s narratives depict nature not as a passive backdrop, but as a dynamic force—often wounded, always resilient. Drawing on the studio’s Japanese roots and its global influence, the book situates Ghibli’s work within a broader environmental discourse, highlighting its unique contribution to animated cinema. Through detailed analysis and evocative visuals, readers are invited to rediscover beloved characters—Totoro, Chihiro, the tanukis of Pom Poko, and Princess Kaguya—as guides through fragile ecosystems and ethical dilemmas. Ghibli’s heroes are not warriors, but diplomats of nature, navigating polluted worlds with empathy and hope."

Studio Ghibli movies are full of incredible artistry across the board, with detail and care put into every frame you see on-screen. The painted backgrounds are not just to fill the space, the environments are integral to the story, even in the earliest releases as seen in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind in 1984. The Environmental Philosophy Behind Ghibli is set to focus on this, perfect for fans of storytelling, beautiful art, and those wanting to learn more about one of the biggest influences in animation.

As mentioned, the animation studio is no stranger to artbooks, having released them for the individual movies, as well as focused on specific themes. Just last year a look at the environment art was shared in Painting the Worlds of Studio Ghibli, this focused on the artwork itself, whereas this upcoming release breaks down their importance and influence in all aspects. Titan Books is also a big name in the artbook world, making this a release fans can expect great things from.

Future updates for The Environmental Philosophy Behind Ghibli will be shared here and those interested can pre-order the book below in the US. If outside of the US, keep an eye out with your favourite retailers for listings.
