'Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday - The Art of the Movie' Delayed with No New Release Date

The most anticipated movie of the year is no doubt Avengers: Doomsday, it has fans excited to see some of their favourite characters, as well as Robert Downey Jr.'s return as Doctor Doom. One of the ways people also enjoy the Marvel Cinematic Universe is through concept art, but sadly, the upcoming look at the movie in Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday - The Art of the Movie has been delayed, but this one is a little more concerning than most.
The book was set to release on December 22nd 2026, very shortly after the movie. This is a newer move for Marvel, as post-Endgame, some of the books would come out over a year after the movie or show they were based on (over 2 years in the case of the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law artbook). However, this had begun to narrow down to a few months with the last few releases for the 50+ book series.
The look at Doomsday though has been pushed back to an unknown date, and although it is still showing on many websites as coming in December, those that are the first to be updated have delisted or put in a placeholder date. Penguin Random House and Amazon US, who are quick to update their details and therefore the most reliable, have given it a release date of December 25th 2029. This is clearly a placeholder until they have the new date. The Amazon US listing cannot be found in their search and is only accessible via a direct link. Other websites have been updated to, with more expected to do the same.
So the big question is why? Well, the usual answer is that we don't know and can't even guess as to why, because publishers are very quiet about their artbook delays, and in the case of Marvel, they seldom even mention they exist. But having spoken to publishers, it's often a number of issues, like printing problems, scheduling issues, assets that aren't ready, the list goes on. In the past, Marvel have done a poor job of delaying a book by a month, only to then keep giving it more and more delays. So perhaps this is a lesson learnt and they aren't committing to a date as they don't want to repeat that mistake.
However, this isn't a usual situation because of the delisting, so it could be because of the recent Spider-Man: Brand New Day leaks. For fans fortunate enough to not be aware, Spider-Man: Brand New Day – The Art of the Movie also comes out just days after the movie on August 4th 2026, but a video and screenshots of the book have already circulated online. These came by way of AIPT, a comic-focused website who had a review up for the book on July 8th, which was quickly taken down. It's only speculation, but perhaps Marvel stepped in due to spoilers and as a result they are now questioning the release date for Doomsday's artbook in case it happens again.
Revealing pages for a book ahead of a release isn't uncommon, it has happened on this website many times, but there are things to consider when doing so. The thought here is that if an artbook is out a long time after the movie, game, or show it is based on, then that's not an issue. Also, if the book is out before the movie, as was the case with The Art of Toy Story 5, then I'll share spoiler-free pages, like character designs or moments seen in trailers. But before the book and the project it's based on, especially for the biggest franchise in cinema history with surprise moments? That could have Kevin Feige knocking on your door.
While none of this will be confirmed, Marvel Studios is very cautious with secrets surrounding their releases, so it is reasonable to believe that what happened with Brand New Day could have been the catalyst to delaying Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday - The Art of the Movie. It was good to see them cut the time gap between the movie releases and artbooks right down, but perhaps a month would have been better, as opposed to just days.
What happens next will be interesting to see and could set a precedent for any books that come after. Disney did lay off all but one member of the Visual Development team earlier this year, so what happens to the long running artbook series following Avengers: Secret Wars is up in the air. Artwork was likely completed for the releases up to that movie a long time ago as the team was working well in advance (some even leaked online), so at the very least we can hope for at least that book as well.
The Daredevil: Born Again artbook that was mentioned by artist Jackson Sze in April 2025 has yet to be listed either, indicating it could be delayed to cover multiple seasons, or it has been cancelled. Unfortunately not all of the projects get the artbook treatment now, with Secret Invasion, Echo, Iron Heart, and more going without, so it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility.
Hopefully the wait for the book will not be too long and fans can get lost in the superb talent of the former Visual Development team and the other artists that contributed to Doomsday. With so many characters featured in the movie, it will no doubt be packed with designs to pore over.
