Marvel video games are some of the most popular in the world, letting players take control of their favourite heroes across many genres while providing endless hours of fun. 2025 delivered Marvel Cosmic Invasion, the 90’s style brawler that connected with gamers old and new, and now developer Tribute Games has shared a look at the art that helped create it with Marvel Cosmic Invasion: The Art of the Game!

Marvel Cosmic Invasion: The Art of the Game

The book was released in partnership with Marvel Games and publisher Dark Horse Books on August 4th, 2026. A has copy has arrived here and I’ve been able to jump in and give my thoughts on this look at the pixel art world of Cosmic Invasion, a book I was curious about given the genre isn’t known for getting the artbook treatment.

Build Quality

This is a slightly smaller hardcover than is standard for Dark Horse, but still a good size at 22cm x 28.5cm. It’s well made as expected, coming in on the lighter side with 120 pages, but that’s not unexpected as it's based on a smaller game. The paper is high quality and the print finish is excellent, so business as usual for the publisher.

The resized key art used for the game’s marketing and box art is used on the cover and looks great here too. It also uses spot glossing for the characters and logo for a nice extra touch.

Content

Inside Marvel Cosmic Invasion: The Art of the Game is a wonderful selection of pixel art, character concepts, environment designs, and illustrations, giving readers a look all the elements of the game. It’s a well balanced and structured collection of artwork that keeps things simple, which is often the best way to go to present the full range of work.

It starts with a preface that includes a concept pitch that looks like an in-game screenshot, along with final screenshots, a nice spread to open the book before getting into the meat of the content. All of the title text is done in a retro video game pixel font here and throughout, in keeping with the game’s theme that I appreciated seeing.

It moves onto the characters next, starting with the playable heroes and transitioning into villains (it’s worth noting that no DLC characters are included). What you get here is different versions of pixel art for the characters, showing alternate versions of how they could have looked in the game itself. This is then followed by animation concepts of attacks, poses, movement, and in the case of some enemies, being defeated.

Most of the characters are presented in the same way as seen below, with some variation for larger enemies like Galactus, and smaller ones like symbiotes and A.I.M., but it works well and I really like the artwork shown together. Pixel art fans will love seeing more than just the final version of heroes like Captain America, Spider-Man, and Storm, as well as the enemies like Knull, the Sentinel, and Phyla-Vell.

I particularly love the animation concepts that come in a range of sketches to coloured pixel art. The poses are dynamic, capturing the essence and movements of the characters, even in the simpler art style. This kind of exploration is always fun to see as you can see more than just the visual design, but how the gameplay was created through art. They have a charm that I think a lot of people will enjoy, also being perfect for artists wanting some unique references. Some of the more over the top characters are highlights for me, such as Rocket Racoon and his comically large guns, and Venom’s fluid transformations, both depicted with the game’s nostalgic 90’s style.

The environments also get to shine with superb artwork in a variety of spreads showing wide shots of stages, development drawings, a look at the background art, and more. The standout pages present the progress from an early drawing to the final design, showing how they added details, colours, and effects through art. It’s a strong display of the range of locations in the game and the work it took to create them, from the more grounded streets of New York, to the alien worlds of Klyntar and Asgard. It’s less structured than the character sections, but is suited for this chapter.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion: The Art of the Game ends with easter eggs from the world of the Marvel Universe, followed by illustrations. The easter eggs are a nice touch and feature buildings like the Daily Bugle, characters found in stages such as Jeff the Land Shark, and the food items. A lot of details were added to the game to expand the world beyond just the heroes and villains, which is thoughtfully a part of this book too. It wraps up with a selection of cutscene illustrations, adding even more variety to the artwork found inside.

Captions are written by Tribute Games themselves, giving details on the characters and locations in small paragraphs. There is not a lot of reading and it’s kept simple, but you do get some interesting notes on the design approach and some comic issues that inspired costumes for the characters, with the environments getting basic descriptions. This is far from a ‘Making of’ book, but it does make it feel more complete.

Credits

The artists are not shared on each page which isn’t the most ideal, but they aren’t left out either, because they are listed on the last page of the book. This is for all of the art team, including the director, background artist, and animators, and more, which is always great as it gives everyone the recognition they deserve.

Use of Space

This is a smaller artbook as it’s not a AAA title, but Marvel Cosmic Invasion: The Art of the Game does well to fill all the pages with artwork and not leave any wasted space. As mentioned, the character chapters use a simple approach to the presentation, but here and in the other sections, the images are a good size and make a the most of the space available. It’s clean and readable, with simple backgrounds to keep the art as the focus. A great job overall from the design team.

Value

Jumping back into the beat ’em up through the art comes with an RRP of $29.99 in the US and £25.99 in the UK. This is lower than most, but that does account for the lower page count compared with artbooks for big releases. The quality is definitely there to justify the pricing if you’re a big fan of the game and want to see more, especially as games like this are not expected to get an artbook.

Deals come and go to, with Amazon currently listing the book at $28.49 in the US and £21.37 in the UK. Expect this to fluctuate, but under $25 in the US is what I would consider a strong deal, with the current UK price being hard not to recommend to a player that’s interested. The value is there before a discount, but some listings already look great for those with space on their shelf.

Verdict

The retro gaming style Marvel returned to looks just as good on paper as it does on-screen, hitting you with nostalgia and great design at the same time. The variety of artwork in Marvel Cosmic Invasion: The Art of the Game is what I had hoped for and, although doesn't share deep development details, is one you can revisit endlessly. Not only will players enjoy this release, but people that enjoy Marvel, pixel art, and 90’s style brawlers will find it interesting as well.

Marvel have always been reliable at giving their games the artbook treatment with the developers they work with, and this is another great look at the Marvel universe. Tribute Games share some superb and interesting artwork in Marvel Cosmic Invasion: The Art of the Game, which is given a worthy presentation by Dark Horse. It’s not often smaller games get a dedicated artbook, but this is one proves there should be more of them.
