This week on The Artbook Collector YouTube channel we look back at a fan-favourite PlayStation series that has been going for more than 20 years with The Art of Ratchet & Clank!
Released in 2018 by Dark Horse, the history of Insomniac Games' iconic duo is shared through concept art, giving fans a look at how the world and visual style came together. The book is sadly rare now, although it can sometimes be found on second-hand markets, and is currently the only artbook for the series. Until a new book is finally released, check out a preview of this book below.
The 248-page hardcover highlights artwork for early game ideas, the characters, enemies, weapons, locations, vehicles, and more. From rough sketches to full colour pieces, the book is rich with a range of artwork that all captures the type of styles seen in 3D animation, as well as the charm of the Ratchet & Clank games. This is all alongside insights from the developers to give fans more of a peak behind the scenes, taking readers from the first PS2 release, to the PS4 remake from 2016.
Inside the following games are included;
Ratchet & Clank (2002)
Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando (2003)
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal (2004)
Ratchet & Clank: Deadlocked (2005)
Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction (2007)
Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty (2008)
Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time (2009)
Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (2011)
Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault (2012)
Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus (2013)
Ratchet & Clank (2016)
Ratchet & Clank is an action-platformer that follows Ratchet, a resourceful mechanic and last of his species as a Lombax, along with his friend Clank, an intelligent robot he wears on his back. Together they travel across the galaxy to take on various villains, including the series regular Dr. Nefarious. The franchise began on the PS2 in 2002, blending third-person shooting, platforming, and puzzle-solving, while establishing a humourous and stylised look seen most often in animated movies. It also stands out for its eccentric cast of characters and imaginative weapons. There have since been over a dozen games across consoles, handhelds, and mobile platforms, with the most recent hit being Rift Apart in 2021 for PS5. The duo are not done yet, as it is expected that more games will be coming in the future from Insomniac Games, making it one of PlayStation's oldest active series.
