Video Preview - The Art of Avatar: Fire and Ash

On The Artbook Collector YouTube channel this week is a preview of the the artwork behind the latest movie in James Cameron's sci-fi blockbuster franchise, with The Art of Avatar: Fire and Ash!

Released on July 2nd in the UK and coming on July 21st 2026 elsewhere from publisher DK, the 272-page hardcover shares a look at the work of the concept artists and costume designers behind the return to Pandora, including insights into the designs and the making of Avatar: Fire and Ash. Artwork for the new additions to Avatar are found throughout, including the Mangkwan and Verang, the Wind Traders, and the new creatures. The artwork is spectacular as always, with the world of Pandora led by production designer Dylan Cole, and Ben Proctor working on the side of the human technology and the RDA. It's littered with unused designs, all alongside interviews with the creatives and artists to give deeper insights into how it all came together.

In my review of the book, I spoke highly of the stunning artwork found in the book, as well as the details shared in the interviews. I did point out though that the black pages are fingerprint and smudge magnets, and don't work well with images that are already dark to begin with. The previous artbook for the series, The Art of Avatar: The Way of Water, was also released by DK as well, with The Art of Avatar from Abrams Books released in 2009, but at times very expensive to buy second hand.

Production designer Dylan Cole has released his own artbook Creating Worlds: The Cinematic Art of Dylan Cole, which includes a look at some of his pieces from the first and second Avatar movies, including the Flight of Passage Disney ride. In my review I gave it high praise as a gallery style artbook that showcases his immense talent across a number of he has worked on.
