The Autobots took their ongoing battle against the Decepticons to the big screen in 1986 with The Transformers: The Movie, expanding its world beyond a Saturday morning cartoon and helping cement it as a global hit franchise. To celebrate its 40th anniversary, The Transformers: The Movie - The Ultimate Visual History will hit shelves later in the year to share a look at how it was made.

The upcoming artbook comes by way of publisher Insight Editions as a 256-page hardcover and will be released on October 27th 2026. It is listed for $60, but discounts are already available for pre-orders, including on Amazon US, with other retailers yet to make the book available to pre-order.

The book was actually first spotted in April, but the reason it went unreported here is because, like many books, it wasn't formally announced. Artbooks can be hard to track at the best of times, due to most being simply listed on websites and nothing more, as was the case here. The lack of promotion means some slip by even the most diligent collectors, though I expect Insight Editions will post about The Transformers: The Movie - The Ultimate Visual History closer to its release.

Inside will be deep dive into how the move was created, including a look at its story, impressive casting, iconic metal soundtrack, and its lasting impact on the future of the franchise. Some of these details are shared though interviews with those that worked on the movie, making this not just a dive into the artwork, but a nerdy in-depth look at the animation for movie buffs.

Of course, this wouldn't be an artbook without art, and this upcoming release will give fans a look at the early concepts and storyboards for the movie. What other images will be included is not yet clear, but often in books like this there is key art and poster art included as well. Part of the official description of the book for the images is as follows;

"Central to the film’s legend is its eye-popping visuals, with beautifully rendered vistas, imaginatively conceived characters, and scenes of glorious no-holds-barred destruction. Illustrated with concept art, storyboards, and other visuals, this deluxe book will showcase the incredible design work that went into the film, bringing together a dazzling wealth of never-before-published imagery."

The Transformers: The Movie is an animated film from 1986 that followed the debut of the series two years prior, taking place after the second season. It introduced the planet-destroying villain Unicron, while continuing the ongoing war between the Autobots and Decepticons. The movie was darker in tone and gained a cult following in the years after its release, despite its poor critical and commercial success when it was released.

Its status as a cult classic certainly puts The Transformers: The Movie - The Ultimate Visual History on the wishlist for the many that would like to learn more about how it was made when it arrives on October 27th. Those interested in pre-ordering the book can do so here;
