We are going back to 2019 on The Artbook Collector YouTube channel this week, with a look at the online sci-fi shooter Anthem to say goodbye after its servers were shut off January 12th 2026.
The Art of Anthem was released by Dark Horse in partnership with the game's developer BioWare in March 2019, shortly after the game was launched on February 22nd, giving players a look at the art behind the new world from the team. 7 years later, the servers were shut off by publisher EA, making the game unplayable. While the game had a short life, art can last many lifetimes and should be seen, so enjoy a preview of the book below.
Inside the 208-page hardcover book is a look at the the early ideas for the game, character concepts, Javelin designs, environments, wildlife art, and more. This is all complimented with insights from some of the art team that offer details on the artwork, their approach, and the world of Anthem. It's the usual affair for a video game artbook, but that's not a bad thing as it's a tried and tested formula that delivers a good look at the art team's talent. As you can see, the artwork is incredible throughout, making this appeal to not just players, but fans of sci-fi, mech suits, and stunning environments.
Anthem was (as it sadly no longer 'is') an online RPG from BioWare, presented as a third-person shooter in an open world with flight mechanics. In this sci-fi world, the player takes on the role of a Freelancer, people that use Javelin exosuits to traverse and survive the planets dynamic weather, dangerous creatures, other humans, and ancient mysteries. Up to four players could team together to take on the world with gunplay, melee weapons, special attacks, and their acrobatic suits that are capable of flight and rapid movement.
The game didn't receive the best reviews and suffered with a lack of end-game content early on, but maintained a dedicated fanbase and improved with post-release updates. On January 12th 2026, the servers were shut down, making the game unplayable as it required an internet connection. Now that it is offline, those with The Art of Anthem on their shelf have not just a book, but a piece of gaming history.
The book has sold through its stock, so copies can now only be bought on second hand markets. If you are interested though, the links below can be used to buy a Kindle version of the book.
