On the The Artbook Collector YouTube channel this week, we head back in time, to both 2012 for the book, but the also American Revolution for the game, with The Art of Assassin's Creed III!
Titan Books and Ubisoft teamed for the first time on the Assassin's Creed series with this artbook, which led many more releases for the future games. Amazingly, it is still available to buy as well, with new copies readily sold online. The 144-page hardcover highlights the concept art behind Connor's adventure taking on the Templars.
Inside is the concept art for characters, locations, weapons, ships, and the modern day setting. The artwork for the games has always been exceptional, with the character art capturing the style of classic portrait paintings, but with a modern flair. The environment art captures the feel of a place, as opposed to just showing static and lifeless landscapes and buildings. A lot of work goes into the historical research of the series, which in this case is 18th-centrury Colonial America, but capturing that history artwork, and later in the game, is always impressively done.
Assassin’s Creed III from Ubisoft is an open-world adventure game set during the American Revolution. It follows Connor, a half-Mohawk, half-British warrior that hopes to protect his people caught in the fight between Assassins and Templars. The game takes players to cities, including Boston and New York, the frontier wilderness, and out to sea for naval combat.
The game was released on October 30th 2012 and was a another commercial success for the series, selling over 3.5 million copies in its first week, 7 million within a month, and more than 12 million copies worldwide within a few months.
The next game for the series is Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced, which is getting its own artbook, with The Art of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced coming July 14th 2026.
