The artbook preview of the week on The Artbook Collector YouTube channel is The Art of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones!
Continuing the tradition of releasing an artbook with each movie release, something that started back in the late 70's with the A New Hope, this artbook showcases a huge amount of the art and designs for Episode II: Attack of the Clones. The book was released in 2002 by publisher Del Rey and comes as a hardcover with over 200 pages.
Inside you will find concept art for the characters, vehicles, droids, planets, weapons and more. It does a fantastic job at not wasting any space and getting a lot of pieces in, this includes early sketches all the way through to detailed renders and marketing art. Like the previous 4 movie artbooks, it also has the screenplay too. There is also the inclusion of art for ideas and characters that never made it into the film, a highlight of the book that Star Wars fans will really enjoy seeing. On top of all this, there is commentary and notes from the artists too, with their work credited on each page.
Star Wars artbooks are always worthy of being added to any collection, not only do they produce well thought out layouts and designs, but Lucasfilm has always had some of the strongest art teams in cinema. This book boasts big names that should be recognisable to many Star Wars fans, including Erik Tiemens, Ryan Church, Iain McCaig and Dermot Power. Also featured is long time artist Doug Chiang, who has his own premium book set coming in December from Abrams Books, including a volume dedicated to Star Wars, titled Doug Chiang: The Cinematic Legacy And The Star Wars Legacy.
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones is now over 20 years old, but being part of such an iconic series makes this book as worthy of highlighting now as ever. New and younger collectors may have not checked out this book due to it's age or simply being unaware it exists. It's still available on second hand markets at a reasonable price though, so don't think you have missed the window for grabbing the book. The copy featured in the video was bought this way as it pre-dates the start of the collection here.
